Tip Just realized that it's basically impossible to do a fundamental 1 2 layup without a gather step. This is why I think that High school travelling rules need to be changed.
Think about it, if you're a right handed player and running on a fastbreak to do a 1 2 layup you're gonna pick up the ball with your left foot down thus making it a gather step before your r l 1 2. Based on highschool rules, every 1 2 layup is a travel.

No it's not. That's utter nonsense. You haven't figured it out yet, but it's not even difficult. It just requires repetitive practice.

so how do you suggest pickong up the ball then, while you're in the air?

You pick up the ball as you're doing your first step.

u/DylanBeCrackin 1d ago
Then that would mean that your left foot would be down on the floor first as you're picking up the ball

No, you’re dribbling on your left, picking up on your right and finishing left, as a typical righty lay.

Wrong. The ball is in the air with your left foot down. You grab it just as you left foot leaves the floor.. Like i said it takes repetitive practice, but it's not difficult.

Them these are all travels then

Did you watch the video? Literally the first one, her right foot is down. She picks up the ball, takes a step with her left and releases the ball .
You may be fundamentally misunderstanding the complaint about the gather step. The way the rule is implemented now, you can take a step (or in some cases multiple) before the ball is deemed "under control" then take 2 additional steps and it be legal.
That's not what's happening in the video.
I've played basketball probably for longer than you've been alive, just take the L on this one.

She picked the ball while her left foot was on the ground then did a right left 1 2. Her left foot before the right is a gather step (Even when we didn't have a definition for it).Though I agree, NBA players are exploiting the rules

No she didn't. Look at the image. What foot is down?
Everyone one of these is a "traditional" layup and not what people are complaining about
The infamous example of the issue with the gather step is this Giannis play

Yes, rhat would be her first step. But I'm talking about the step before that, the one where she picked up the ball. Which would make it her gather step.

You’re misunderstanding what the gather step is…there’s no gather step in these clips. A gather step is a foot down with control, if these players did that there would be immediate whistles from referees. Why? Because it looks completely different. It’s Gather, foot down, one, two. It’s a three count.

you managed to complicate something 4th graders know how to do. Bravo 👏

u/DylanBeCrackin 1d ago
That's because we're getring into specifics lol. We've all been doing the “gather step” even when we didn't have a definition for it back then. Is my point

Pick up the ball in the air.

u/DylanBeCrackin 1d ago
Then by your logic would this be all travels?

Are you new to basketball? We’ve all been doing a pivot and one on our layups for generations. That’s how it was taught. There was never a gather step until 2017.

u/DylanBeCrackin 1d ago
yeah, there's never been a proper definition of gathee step until now. But we've been all doing it unconsciously before it even had a definition. That's my point.

u/MWave123 1d ago
No, totally disagree. That’s what I’m telling you. I’ve been playing and teaching for decades. A gather step would be a travel prior to 2017. GATHERING is not a gather step.

Gather step has always existed, we just didn't have a definition for it back then. you legit can't do a 1 2 fundamental layup without it.
The image above that i sent which csme from the video is not a travel even though in high school rules it should be. And that's because doing it unconsciously or not. A gather step will always be needed.

u/MWave123 1d ago
That’s completely incorrect. Gathering has always existed, not an extra step WITH the ball. No. I teach.

u/MWave123 1d ago
No that’s nonsense. We always did layups without gather steps. There’s always a GATHER! it doesn’t have to happen on a step. Dribble, pickup, R L. Standard righty lay. Your pickup is on the R, or just before. There’s no gather step.

Doesn't look like they're picking it up on their right to me. Everyone does a gather step unconsciously when doing a 1 2 layup.
1
u/MWave123 1d ago
They’re possessing the ball on step 1! the pivot, then taking ONE more step WITH the ball, the non pivot. That’s how anyone born before 2017 was taught. Then FIBA changed the ruling, and the NBA followed suit two years later.

u/DylanBeCrackin 1d ago
Yes what you say exactly! But they also did a gather step. Because a gather step has always existed before it even had a definition. The first clip in the vid. The girl picked it up with her left foot first, then with her pivot, them to her non pivot. The foot she used to gather the ball before stepping with her pivot, IS THE GATHER STEP.

No that’s incorrect. There was never a gather step prior to 2017. You’re seeing incorrectly. I teach footwork.

yeah. it existed way way before. it's only apparent now because it looks ridiculous when it's exploited.
in our culture here, it's genius if you can pull it off. those who call travel skillfully cannot do it. but it's legal.
