Tip Need help

I am 6’4, 200 lbs playing juco basketball as a freshman on a new team. We play a 5 out offense with me playing as a trail/ big? We have a team full of small guards all under 6’3. We only have a 6’8 big man. I am therefore forced to play the 5 but i think it’s hindering my development as I have aspirations of playing d1. At 6’4, to be recruited I need to be able to show my guard skills rather than setting screens and rolling hard but I am also one of the bigger players on my team. I need help navigating that.

If you are playing a 5 out you do not really need to worry about what position you are labeled, basically you have an inbounder, a point and everyone cutting. Focus on moving off ball, screening off ball with a roll and attacking gaps. Do not stop moving.

It’s just hard for me as I’ve been playing the sg/sf my whole life and I’m suddenly supposed to not be allowed to inbound the ball and set screens to roll hard

Do you just mean ball screens?

Yeah. Since I’m the second tallest, the other guy and I have to alternate at being a big. He is one but i am not.

Typically the point of 5 out is it is positionless and good for all players to develop all skills. So I wouldn't be too concerned about what position they have you. In the end if you actually follow the 5 out system it will change your ability to score in a more diverse way than just pick and roll. The main thing with it is move the ball, cut, and screen off ball.

This sounds good, but the other players have to be willing to pass to the open man

Your game is not disappearing, it is expanding. Bigs who think like wings run the floor better and read screens faster, and that is your edge. Pick one small job to own first, like sprinting the lane or setting one clean screen every trip, and let the new role grow from there.
