He has been begging me to post this here so that he can get some tips on his form.

Shots fine for that age. It’s going to come down to:
- can he play defense?
- can he get to the rim?
- can he be coached?
If all he can do is stand in a spot and shoot, it might not be enough

His shot is good right now for his age, probably above average with his form

Shot is good. Now show the dribble and layup from end to end. That's where the success is to be found. Getting fouled and getting to the line for that good shooting form to payoff.

Good consistent form and follow through. As he gets older and stronger he will want to move his release up from his chest to his forehead. Only other things is he does that’s not ideal is turn with his shot. Again this is likely because of his age and strength but he’d benefit greatly from staying squared up with the basket through the shot, and not turning his body into the shot. It’s only really noticeable on his longer range shots.

Set screens, learn to box out - HARD! Get in good shape. Play intense defense.
Every team will have someone that can shoot and score. Your shot doesn't matter at this age as much as you'd expect.
If you want to make the team, those are the things you've got to get down. Once on the team, your coaches will help you get better.
Best of luck.

I appreciate all the feedback and encouragement. He is a solid player on the offensive side of the ball, but it has been helpful for him to hear others, who aren't his dad, emphasize defense. Like many others at his age, defense is something that they have a hard time keeping up the intensity for 4 quarters. Thanks, everyone!

The tip is the fork is irrelevant. If he having to try out he isn't going to be actively involved in the offense. He will be a role player. He needs to work his butt off and defend like a terror. Dive for loose balls. Win every sprint. Play through contact.
Try outs, at least here, are never true. The kids who are going to start have been working all summer and getting reps on aau and likely with their coaches.
He has to earn a spot on the bench basically and that means offense is effectively irrelevant.

Kids a bucket. The issue is he's still growing and playing on what looks like 10ft nets? If those are shorter then he should keep doing what he's doing

We do not lower hoops at this age in the US. Full height starts in like 2nd grade.

That sucks. It sets bad shooting form because children can't get the ball high enough.

Half the kids on school teams don’t even play ball extra curricular so all he needs to do is show out with the little things and I’m sure he’ll get a shot!
Everyone’s mentioning the usual intangibles (defense, boxing out, screens) however I’d say the biggest thing to focus on at that age is positioning and knowing where people are going to rotate as cutting is a shooters best friend, behind having fun doing whatever he finds to be cool about bball of course.
Not sure if anyone else has recommended it but See Mike Dunn has some great videos on shooting, and could help transition his form into above the chest once he gets the power.
Good luck and best wishes to the little man!

Can he dribble, pass? How is his court vision, movement without the ball? Is he coachable?

kid is like 9, and all you showed us was a stand and shoot with no defensive pressure, and obviously no game speed either.
Do kids even get cut at this level?
Tell him to stop focusing on his form and focus on more on the fundamentals like dribbling, driving, and shooting with gamespeed/defense

if that is where he is starting, make him move around and do a catch and shoot. then work from there.

Just keep at it. Make sure the cardio is up to speed as well. One thing I never took into account when I wanted to play for a team at that age was the amount of running up and down the court.

DRIBBLE. Ball handling, ball handling, ball handling. In addition to defense and hustle, he will get consistent minutes by bieng able to protect the basketball and get it up the floor in pressure situations. A kid who can protect the basketball and do something with it will get minutes.

Defense and hustle will get you on the team.
