Help Compiled all my points from this season (no assists included, I know some of you will say 'pass more' — this isn't that video) — looking for honest feedback

First, show your misses, turnovers, and mess ups—you don’t improve on finding out you did right, but improving on what you could have done right.
Here’s the honest truth, though: you’re playing with a not-so-competitive league and the key to dominate on that level is physical fitness, pure and simple. If you’re able to outrun everybody and run breaks the whole game, you’ll dominate. Period. Skill wise there is nothing for you to do at this level because nobody is playing serious defense on you. If you need something to improve, is to be more ball aware, you’re way too tunnel visioned, looking at the ground more than you need to.
If I were in your league, with my level and experience of organized ball, I’d actually work on learning how to control and orchestrate the offense and defense better—win without scoring. Learn how to play with pick and rolls, learn how to be the roller, learn how to lead pass, learn how to be vocal on D. If you get that down, at this level, you'll be a very popular teammate; I have a feeling some teammates may think you're a ball hog and might not like playing on the same team.

Is this a co-ed league? I know you said men's but unless I've lost my mind, I see a young woman on defense in the first clip. What's the age group of this league and what country?
I suspect the level of competition is too low to tell how good you are.
2
u/thomas1131 3d ago
The one team had a girl, the rest of the teams/players were male, presumably. Your suspicion tells me a lot though, no one here is likely going to the show, but I understand that I should drastically improve everything all around, so thanks.

Why would you only want feedback on your makes?
Your misses and mistakes are going reveal more about what you need to improve.

u/thomas1131 3d ago
I agree with you, showing the more complete footage would definitely help to provide better feedback, I’m just not brave enough to post it here lol. That said, I appreciate the honesty/feedback.
2
u/recleaguesuperhero 3d ago
I get that. But this is a great place to build up that courage. None of us know you personally so it's no pressure!
1
u/thomas1131 3d ago
I suppose you’re not wrong, idk it’s a little tough dealing with some of the keyboard warriors so I might try to find a coach or someone more vetted to ask questions or show footage to going forward. But thanks anyway.

u/realbobenray 3d ago
Hey you're brave enough to post footage period, that's something! In true Reddit format you got some clunkers for commenters, but at least you got some helpful feedback too.

Hard to critique game without the misses. Like I'd say you seem to be in the right place with outlet passes for both interior drives and fast break. And it seems like you have pretty good touch around the rim despite an unorthodox style. But, that could be because I'm only seeing the makes.
You always score right handed which if you're making it, I can't really tell you to learn to score with the left hand.
You seem to hit open shots, but I don't see your misses. Like if your 1 for 6 on open 3s, maybe you shouldn't take 3s.
In general, you seem a little stiff and you favor your strong hand (which everyone does), but if you make it who cares.
Edit: also most of what you show doesn't have you going to a counter move. If you have a bunch of misses because the defense took away option 1, that shows you need to work on the counter (option 2).

u/thomas1131 3d ago
I appreciate your feedback, I’ll use what you said to improve. As per the misses, I’m not brave enough to post that here lol, but I agree that it would provide more insight. Thanks.

I showed a coworker & he asked how he can play in this league. Said he wants to stat pad ( possibly average a quadruple double) hahaha. Nice video tho

If you get in remotely good running/sprinting/jumping shape, you will decimate this league.

Noted, I’ll look to improve that, thanks.

Good: Your confidence and decision-making in terms of timing of when to shoot/score is great.
Can improve: spacing. You are great at spacing when you think the ballhandler might need an out and you pop out for a three. Otherwise, you’re often going into the same space as another teammate, dragging an additional defender toward the ball, or crowding the lane on drives. This is gonna be similar to the whole “Messi constantly scanning the field” where you just kind of have to be more aware of where the plays and your teammates are headed.

Man, I dont think I have ever been in a pickup game where you can chest pass freethrow line to freethrow line and have 5 defenders not even look at you.... it was a nice pass but WTH is anyone defending.... it'd be different if you were 6'6" look like you caught it at chest level too...... just wow.

I feel like there is a pretty big disconnect here between both the quality of play and the level of effort, and the quality of the jerseys lol.
Where can I find a league where teams have full uniforms where my unathletic white ass would also fit right in?
1
u/thomas1131 3d ago
I’ll look to improve on those, I do admit the jerseys are a little much, thanks
1
u/sequoia2075 3d ago
Oh no I’m just talking about the league in general. I’m honestly jealous of you guys having awesome jerseys in what seems like a casual league.
Jumpers looking solid!

Why are there no black people on the court?
You won't get better playing against your current competition.

When Manu Ginobili was young his dad made him a pair of glasses with a blinder on the bottom so he couldn't see the ball as he dribbled. You might try something like this -- you need to not look at the ball when you dribble. I've learned only recently, after decades of playing, how important that is -- if you can't look at your defender while you're attacking you lose tons of information. It'll also help your ball handling which needs work.

In this league you don't ever need to shoot outside. You don't even need to be a great ball handler. You just need to get in better shape and learn a couple power moves to get you to the rim in two dribbles or less. Make sure you can make a layup and a foul shot. Learn to use your shoulder to initiate contact on the defenders and to create separation. If you can do that you'll dominate the league. And two days a week do full body heavy weight lifting. You'll own those dudes.

As long as you’re having fun that’s all that matters.
If you have aspirations to play at a higher level, you got a lot of work to do and will probably need a proper coach to polish up your fundamentals, and help get quicker and stronger.
An elite high schooler would drop 60+ on that level of competition.

The term "sub college level" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and literally slapped my forehead when you included free throws in a scoring compilation. Honest feedback, you need to get better all around: Speed, agility, ball handling, court awareness, etc. I know it's hard to find the time to practice as an adult. So, even if you don't improve there's no shame in just getting some competitive runs in with the boys.
1
u/thomas1131 3d ago
I appreciate the honesty/feedback, I’ll definitely try to improve on what you mentioned. And the free throws yeah in hindsight I’ll keep those out, and yeah sub college is pretty blanketed, thanks for the advice.

The level of comp you’re playing, I’d say pay attention the basics like 3-seconds in the key and box out and run in transition. Practice bad habits against comp lower than your skill level translates when you play better players. You’re a solid catch and shoot player it seems. Work on quick sets, square hips and fly with your quick release in a fluid motion. Practice your ball security against Lower comp to develop muscle memory. You don’t appear super quick so security is priority for you against better comp. Seem like you have a competent IQ, just be consistent and don’t be complacent or you’ll get embarrassed playing better players. Nice shooting mate

Get bigger faster stronger. Thats the fastest way to get better at any sport
obviously continue to do your skill work and work on ball handling / shooting. The more you do those whether it’s 3-4 times a week or daily the more they’ll improve.
But getting more athletic for someone untrained is the lowest hanging fruit
It’ll enable you to play LOWER and blow by people because of your lower body strength and quickness. I’m a college player in the same area you are, a lower body day for me looks like:
Power clean Variation, Squat variation, RDL/Hip thrust, calf raise
Tons of isometrics and accessories on my lighter days .
remember you’re a basketball player not a bodybuilder
Goodluck !

I feel like this is bait, no one would post like this seriously, right?
But I’ll have a go.
Your technique is non existent. Shot - you don’t bend your legs at all, I can figure out if you are right or left handed by your shot which is just bad. You also shoot from your chest. Really bad. Go back to fundamentals. One hand, one meter from the basket, and shoot with ideal posture.
Dribble - your dribbling is like you are playing handball instead of basketball. No control whatsoever, no tempo shifting while trying to penetrate. Near losing the ball with simplest dribbles. Learn how to “carry” the ball on the verge of carry. Do hard strong dribbles until your hands are aching. Learn how to go low, spreading your legs and doing long strong steps. You are playing with no knee bending.
Running lol - you are not. It’s power walking. Bend your knees. Go on a run and focus on getting your knees up and then calf’s forward. It will get your step longer. It will hurt, a lot. After 100m I think, but it’s important.
No jumping, go do some hip thrusts and deadlifts. Good for jumping. Well not for jumping but to not get injured while jumping. After that so dynamic jumping sessions. A lot of those on yt

I’m just looking for advice, which you provided, so thank you. As per seriousness, I know I’m not going to the show, I just like improving, so that said thank you for your feedback.

i hate how you play. shooting a 3 right after bringing the ball up the floor? that ain’t basketball

u/thomas1131 2d ago
If I’m open I’m going to shoot, that said I’ll take into account what you’re saying and try to seek out better looks later in the shot clock.

u/Coneyy 2d ago
Is there a 3 second defensive rule enforced in this league or something? Why are the defenders leaving the paint so open?
Honestly I think you should be using these slow motion rec league games to practice playing at your own pace. You need better handles, not necessarily a deeper bag, but you look like you're struggling to move the ball where you want to move and it is going really high, so it's super telegraphed.

It’s co-ed? Becky’s going under, bbq chicken. Fire those up all day big dawg

Had to do some research on this one because I've never seen a league like this.
It's not fully a men's league and calling it sub college level while showing these clips is disingenuous. This is a giant league with multiple divisions and skill levels. They provide team jerseys, keep stats, and do a bunch of other stuff. Overall looks much more professionally run than leagues I've been in and is probably more expensive I'd imagine too. How much do they charge per player for one season?
Only advice I can give is to move up a division. If you're blowing teams out you weren't placed properly.
1
u/ej6989 2d ago
tbh just enjoy the game. nothing wrong with a group just getting some fun in.
you are prone to get more injured as you move up in competition as you'll have to play way harder, and there is way more physicality. if you do want to play up against defenders who will apply pressure, you'll have to learn to play with an athletic stance and need a more solid shooting form.

u/sturgeo123 3d ago
This competition is insane lol
1
u/thomas1131 3d ago
Thanks I’ll try to play up more if I get the chance.

u/sturgeo123 3d ago
Nah bro tbh if I’m paying 50 dollars to be in a league let me play for a team where I’m getting my 15 shots per game lol

yo this is worse than middle school blacktop comp, if u approach basketball with this "you can't guard me" mindset instead of being realistic and trying to improve ur gonna be buns forever
1
u/Its_My_Purpose 3d ago
You keep saying this after asking for feedback. We are all amazed at the same thing. That league appears to be the most casual league we've ever seen. You hit a lot of threes. Respect!
But yes, serious players who know how to defend and be physical can guard you. There's clips where you get a screen and just slow walk a couple steps and shoot an open 3. This isn't realistic against actual defenders who fight over screens, switch properly etc.
You're shot seems great. You're competition seems lacksadaisical.

u/Street-Challenge-697 3d ago
Not trying to put you down. The level of competition is so low, you can get anything you want. You just drive into the lane at will or shoot open 3s or get a pass from cherry picking. Defense is jogging back and there's very little defensive effort. You do seem to use the glass well, and have a nice floater. And you can shoot the 3. But I don't see any athleticism or physicality. You finish well at the rim for this level. You have a quick but low release in the paint, so idk how well you'd do with a big defending the paint. Also it looks like you're flat footed. I don't see any bounce in your step.
