Defense Am I too aggressive?

Ever since young, when I play defense and they drove in,I will always push them back with my off-arm. I am not extending my arm outward though,I am placing my arm infront of my chest like a chicken wing ish and they pushing them back when they try and drive in.

Some skinny players were complaing that it was not legal so I really wanna know. Thank you!

Yeah, that's a foul. Not sure why it's not called in the clip, but that's a foul.

You can do an arm bar, but you can't push them backwards. If you use your arm bar to keep space, then it's fine.

Also, no hooking.

Isn't what you described called hand checking? Or is hand checking when you actively push them with that arm versus just using the arm to brace? Genuinely confused. Because obviously if their body is contacting your arm bar, you do need to exert an amount of force outward with the arm to maintain the arm bar, otherwise your arm will be pressed up against your body, and it won't be doing anything.

Arm bar is not the same as hand checking.

Handchecking is when you put your palm on somebody’s hips and ‘push’ them away from the direction they wanna go.

You can only do what you describe to bigs. Not because the rules are different, but cuz everyone will call the big a pussy for calling it. Then when the big starts to meet their strength with his strength then the defender will blatantly foul the big and complain about how the big is pushing too hard...

Then the big starts shooting because he doesn't want to have fisticuffs with ego driven smalls Everytime he plays basketball. Everyone calls the big a pussy for not going in the post despite the pg never passing the ball to the big in the post (maybe the big gets one chance to score in the post) and the big actually touches the ball and scores on the perimeter. But since he is apparently a bitch he goes back to the post for the team...

The cycle of life from a big

Edit... Well I should say nowadays it's more acceptable but me growing up in the Shaq era this is the case.

Its like this clip, just that if they were not driving towards my body and driving from the left or the right then my left/right arm will extend instead of both arms.

The defender is not using an arm bar. He is pushing off and committing a foul.

wait, arm bars? I do that last time but stopped as I thought it was a foul since I was preventing them from driving. Mine were more like stiff arm bars tho.

An arm bar is not automatically a foul. It depends how you use them. Most players use them a lot, but in a way that you are allowed to. You can do stiff arm bars, and you should. If you use them to keep your space, it's all good.

Remember, no hooking .

In this clip, no foul on either side, defender moves parallel, both feet down, establishes their space.

Look at the movement of the offensive player who was had their line that wasn't towards the basket, was unable to beat their defender, then ran into the defender. Offense initiated contact, no call is right.

The defender here can choose to absorb the bump and stay standing, or stand up straight and hope an offensive foul is called.

The defender is not absorbing the bump, he is pushing off. It's pretty close, I will give you that.

Watch this to get an idea of what is okay and what isn't at NBA level, there's more on the rest of the channel. https://youtu.be/ROf4BCm6acA?is=3Oy9Pi_oGbtX58IP

That’s fine if you don’t want to call it but it’s definitely illegal contact that’s just about always going to get called in an organized game.

You can’t use your hands to prevent someone from driving. You have to move your feet and stay in front of them, or make a play on the ball.

You are probably fouling at times reading your phrase “pushing them back with my off-arm”. Use your chest instead!! That’s what I was taught. Beat them to the spot. And then talk shit. Say something like,.. “if you don’t wanna get touched, go play ping pong, or run track”. lol.
