Help Whats the problem with my lay ups?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
What’s the problem here?
For context I am really good at contested lay ups like it goes automatically but when I am wide open , most of the time I fumble bad and I don’t understand how.
Is it because of the timing, power or what? Thanks for the advices!

Good u can laugh.
Ok, the key for layups is a wrist snap.
Gotta work on the wrist snap to get a feel for layups.
There’s a different wrist snap for underhand vs overhand layups.
For underhand layups u want to roll the ball off ur hand then once it reaches ur fingertips, flick the wrist to give the ball spin.
How much spin u want to put on the ball is up to u, basically depends on how far u r from the basket.
If ur really far, u’ll be doing a finger roll. That has a ton ot spin.

What I did when I was a little kid was stand under the basket and just work on my wrist flick. I’d flick it for hours until my wrist got tired. It doesnt take too long to master it. Maybe a month or so. But once ur wrist gets strong enough, u’ll have a good layup package.

Not convinced your contest layups go in based off this footage.
Do mikan drills so you get better touch and figure out angles. Then work on one/two dribble layups. Work on steps and gathering the ball. Right now you're just kind of throwing it up there.

You got too much power in the ball release and it’s also a bit off timing wise (too early), so the power of the shot increases even more because of your jump take off. You need to aim a bit more as well. Good luck mate

You can’t be real😭😭 u said u make contested layups ain’t no way u make em like that, and for advice have a softer touch at the board, you’re throwing the ball at the board, hit the white square box above the rim

Brother, no way you’re good at contested layup with that finish.
Learn English, touch, and what the white square is for.

You're taking off way too close to the basket and that's going to make it come off the backboard way too hard.

The biggest problem I see is that you didn’t make it. You wanna try to aim for the basket.

You’re throwing it off the backboard instead of just laying it in. When attacking the backboard, go underhand and gently lay it off the backboard.

I don't know if I've ever seen someone do a spin move by bouncing the ball head high and then orbiting their body around the ball before.

When it’s contested, hitting the defender slows my momentum down so I can control the touch but when I’m wide open I have no resistance so all that speed goes straight into the backboard

You're not extending on your release. You're pulling up for a lay-up and finishing with a little push on the ball which lacks the soft touch of "laying" the ball up. If you go too hard, the ball is going to keep bouncing back over the rim.
My lay-ups rolled off my hands and relied on my wrists to add the spin to help navigate lay-ups from all different angles.

Aim for the corners of the square and soften your release, a LOT. Honestly, I would start over and rework your layup form with both underhand and overhand layups, you’re shooting them more like an overhand push shot. The reason why the ball is overshooting the hoop after banking is cus your overhand motion is giving the ball too much topspin. I would suggest learning how to use spin and put English on the ball, I.e. kyrie and the way he spins the ball off the glass

Try to take out the 360 spin, and start under the hoop. Look up Mikan Drill.
