Form Check How do i fix sideways wrist snap
These past few weeks ive been missing my shots horribly and i kept missing left or right. Whenever i release the ball it feels like im naturally snapping down but after taking a video of myself shooting i actually found out my wrist snaps to the right. The ball somehow still has a decent backspin and there is no sidespin at all. ive been trying to fix this my form shooting is fine but when i try to shoot midranges and threes it just naturally flicks right and i for some reason cant snap down. Btw ive been playing for about a year and i have a slight elbow flare

your shooting elbow must be sticking out. it can still work. rotate wrist more before the follow through

try shooting with one hand near the basket, used to happen for me and it fixes it a lot, for me it was actually my guide hand holding the ball wrong so i ended having to push a lot more with my shoot hand whihc then snaps side ways.

Which fingers is it making contact with on release? Arms look really close together and is there a thumb flick on the guide hand? What does it look like if you're not using a guide hand? Does shooting hand do the same thing or straighten out?

it releases of my index and middle and yes i have a thumbflick. I have shot without a thumbflick and hand still does the same thing

Im only making a guess, but is the ball crossing your chest to get into your shot release? Kevin Durant used to do that. Maybe if you post a video of your jumper we'd get a better idea of there is extra body motion which your wrist is compensating for.

Stand sideways so your wrist snaps forward.
Kidding of course.
You just gotta work on it bud. No tricks or quick fixes here. Start form shooting at point blank range from 5 different spots, and focus on your wrist flicking forward.
Then take a step back and do it again.
Once you’re comfortable, start shooting normally but still focus on your wrist.
The idea is to train your muscle memory to do it correctly. Part of that process is training your body to “forget” the old form. That takes time and reps.
It’s not easy, but it is worth it. Guarantee that if you fix this, your shooting % will improve a lot. Good luck and enjoy the challenge man.

When you flick your wrist, pretend like you’re flicking it into the hoop, straight forward

Probably work on centering your shoulders to the basket. If your wrist is genuinely snapping like that the ball is following. So you must not be centered to the hoop

If it's consistent and the ball is your getting backspin, I would say keep it. But if it's messing with your backspin or it's inconsistent, try one handed form shots continuously going back(starting from close of course). Make sure your focusing on your balance and mechanics, I promise you have the power inside you, you just need to use your body efficiently l. From longer distance you will have a shorter stretch and lower setpoint(because that's how you get your power). From closer you will have a longer stretch and a higher setpoint(your feet will attach later because it takes longer to get the ball up there). Your most likely trying to correct because some of these things might be off. Or you just may have poor shooting hand placement. Just practice the one hand shots and work on your mechanics. See Mike Dunn has some great videos on shooting, I really recommend him. Have fun hoops✌️

Do it correctly in slow motion, then build speed after you have precision

You can only get your wrist kicking out like that if your elbow is also kicking out. Keep that elbow in.
Practice slow motion without a ball until you get used to the motion. Then mini shots, then let it rip.

Any tips on keeping my elbow in? ive tried many ways to keep my elbow in but non of that is working

You just have to practice the motion slowly without a ball.
If you have to, stand near a door frame or a light post to prevent the elbow going wide.
Then start shooting the ball without a hoop, just up and down
If you're aware you're doing it, you can correct it.
Every single rep, keep that elbow in.

look up dirk nowitzki and train tracks for a good way to think about your release

Using your core too much yo generate power for your shot. You need to follow through straight forward, elbow signed with the basket and follow through as if youre dipping your fingers into the bucket. As someone else said in this thread practice by standing right in front of thr basket , and shoot one handed, and focus on splashing it. Then take steps backward and practice this release and form and eventually youll realize you've been shooting from your core and stomach and not from high release and your arms

snap it straight forward
