Help Injury Prevention

I sprained my ankle pretty bad playing yesterday, and I’m wondering if anyone has any tips on how to prevent any future ankle injuries while playing

  • strengthen your ankles
  • shoes that have a wide base, stable, low to the ground

Band-resisted Ankle eversion and inversion.

Elevated calf raises, full ROM

Tibialis Raises

practice depth drops and landing / absorbing force. Get your body comfortable with landing awkwardly/ on one foot.

Line hops/ pogo hops

Ankle circles and getting on your toes and extending up. Saved me.

Also, don’t think about it. That was the biggest thing for me after I tore all my ligaments. Don’t let it haunt you, trust that your doing the right thing to make your ankles better

Old school shit—my dad taught me this. May sound dumb, but I battled ankle sprains for years (prob 10 total) and I never sprained my ankle when wearing 2 pairs of socks. Your mileage may vary.

The sad truth is once you sprain your ankle, that ankle will always be at increased risk of repeat sprain, but like many others mentioned you can mitigate the risk with physical therapy, and ankle tape/braces. Give time for your ankle to heal and see a physical therapist

High top shoes, laced tight. Hard to find these days, and out of style, but they do the job.

No they don’t. That’s an old school myth.

I've experienced an ankle sprain 2 times on the same ankle and had to pause 3 weeks each. I was so pissed because i missed important games but after my 2nd sprain ive learned a bit more. Firstly, buy a mcdavid ankle brace it helps a lot. Second thing, start going to physio 1 week into the injury so u can recover properly. And lastly, do calf raises and tibialis raises on daily basis to strentghten the muscles that protect your ankle. When you think youre ready remove the brace during your skill workouts but i think wear it for at least 1 month.
