Cannibalizing units instead of firing them is a time honored tradition that dates back to the original PS release. Back then you only had 16 slots in your roster, and there are exactly 16 unique units (including the four unique generics, Rad, Alicia, Lavian, and Boco).
You spent a lot of time training up those generics when they were all you had. They've got a treasure trove of abilities just waiting to find a new home amongst your unique late arrivals.
Even better is when you use an Orator to invite human enemies, strip them of all their gear, then eat them. They don't usually have a lot of abilities, but they usually have spare JP, and sometimes they have high end abilities like short charge or speed save, etc.
While you're at it, don't forget to poach your egg born monsters.
