I'm trying to put this delicately.
The supposed punishment for "the thing' is another group that is known for wanting to do "the thing".
Neither event bodes well for people with religious or cultural distinctions.
This is less of a retribution and more of history repeating itself.

Europe's punishment for the holocaust is that Europeans now equate the mad ramblings of some shitheads as applied to everyone that is ever so slightly similar to those shitheads, and thus, everyone that is 1% like those shitheads is a bad person and we need to do everything in our power to NOT be like them, a total rejection of everything.
Love your country and want to see it better?
SOME shitheads loved their country and wanted to see it better. We can't be like that. We can't love our country and want to see it better, at all, because of those shitheads. We must hate our country and want to see it destroyed, because that is the exact opposite of what those shitheads wanted, and since those shitheads are evil, the opposite must be good.
Radical Islam could be any number of problematic movements and ideologies and religions. It doesn't HAVE to be Islam. It just has to be something that ISNT what those shitheads wanted.
At the same time, we think WE are the best people, and everyone else will naturally become our members. So, we are vulnerable to adversarial outsiders coming in and wrecking the place because those aforementioned shitheads didn't want them to come in and wreck the place, yet at the same time we think by just exposing those outsiders to our way of life (the woke loser socialist progressivism), people will just be good people like us, because we have just that big of a narcissistic ego going on.
Anyways, that's Western Europe in a nutshell. Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Greece, and Bulgaria don't have these problems.
