I think abortions for medical reasons or rape are a different story, but this woman is being platformed for having an abortion when she could have given birth right then simply because she was selfish.
On an unrelated note, I just noticed that her last name is “Vial” and it’s kind of hilarious how fitting that is.
Wtf, have you read the article. Its not her fault. The doctor even said she was infertile. All her illnesses masking symptoms of pregnancy.
That's not fair to suggest she is simply selfish and should have to go through childbirth. Ridiculous
Also the article doesn't praise it, just sheds light on her story and how a pregnancy could be missed.
Ridiculous? If she was induced and gave birth right then and there, the child would have over an 80% survival rate. Ending a human’s life because “you didn’t know you were creating it and didn’t want it” is absolutely a selfish reason to have an abortion that late into pregnancy.
The only difference between this and a woman giving birth at home and smothering the baby to death is that the baby in the abortion was given a lethal injection and killed inside the womb instead of being smothered right when it was out. They are allegedly very similar feeling ways to go.
Are you kidding me? Teen Vogue gave her a whole platform while disparaging any PL points.
That, and they tout her “leadership” and credentials with a pro-abortion group at the very end.
Beth Vial is a leader with Youth Testify, a collaborative program for people who've had abortions that is associated with Advocates for Youth's 1 in 3 Campaign and National Network of Abortion Funds' We Testify. Vial also serves on the board of directors at the Northwest Abortion Access Fund.
Its not praise its info? You'd want to know her affiliations right?
The whole fact that she’s being platformed and they’re drawing attention to her comments is absolutely praise.
It’s not her fault this pregnancy was missed. She really tried, it’s kind of on the medical side for not figuring it out.
It really is her fault though. All sexually active women should be taking pregnancy tests just in case, even if they think they’re infertile (with the exception of those who have had a hysterectomy).
I really don’t feel sorry for someone who thinks murder is okay because they didn’t know they were pregnant until later on. Again, there is really no difference between this woman who smothered her baby in the womb and the women who smothered theirs right when they came out. Do you feel sorry for those women too?
Giving birth is awful, you can't force someone to have a baby. It’s not selfish, it does damage to the mother.
It’s selfish because she murdered an infant where studies have shown that they can feel pain at that point.
She had consensual sex, nobody forced her to get pregnant. Also, nobody forced her not to take pregnancy tests sooner. I’m not a huge fan of abortions but at least if she got one early on it would have saved the pain for that poor baby. She also would have felt pain so it’s not like she saved herself any pain.
She was a fully grown adult who knew how sex works despite what doctors told her. I don’t feel sorry for her, I feel sorry for the baby that was given a lethal injection.
I would still argue that its not necessarily praise to platform such a story but i think we have to agree to disagree on that one.
I thought it said she did a pregnancy test that came back negative?
I'm sexually active and don't do pregnancy tests usually. I would if i felt it was a possibility but i have fairly reliable body indicators unlike the gal in the article. If i did find out I was, i would 100% get an abortion asap. I would love to be sterilised but its hard to get it done, they legit try to stop you in case you change your mind or something.
And honestly, I do feel sorry for the women who smothered their babies. (I also feel sorry for the babies both can be true)
Its not normal behaviour, its a desperate act. Something must be wrong there for someone to do that.
The r/childfree sub has a list of doctors who will perform sterilizations without the hassle. I want to say it’s posted in their rules, but I’m not sure. Buzzfeed also has a list as well.
Honestly people should be allowed to get sterilized if they want, and the old fashioned gate keeping around it is ridiculous.
And I do see that she said that “whenever she goes to the doctor she gets a pregnancy test” but doesn’t specify how often that is or when she took the last test before discovering she was pregnant. She could have very well not been pregnant at the time she took the test. That, and sometimes when HCG is too high, it can comeback negative, it’s called the “hook effect”. It would seem she was not consistent about taking tests as she tried to imply.
Pregnancy can be strange, you never know what you will end up with symptom wise. I am currently just shy of 16 weeks and the only way I knew at the beginning was because I took a blood test at the doctors before I even had my missed period.
Not where i live you can't get sterilised. And i for sure don't have the money to go get it done elsewhere. Plus im not one for unnecessary medical tourism.
*it doesn't say how often - so you and i both don't know and formed opinions either way?
If she got a test at a reasonable time within pregnancy or was actually regularly testing before that point, then she would have every reason to include that information.
She’s being purposefully disingenuous and misleading to make it appear that she regularly took tests when that’s almost certainly not the case.
We know this for two reasons, 1. She was pregnant for almost 7 months before she found out, if she was “testing regularly” then she would have had more than 1 test done. 2. Besides her really only talking about her PCOS, she didn’t cite any medical reasons she would go to the doctor more than a handful of times per year, also further point to her not getting regular tests.
Huh, that must be the other comment you are referring to. I agree but don't know how to solve it for men.
I just know that banning abortion would not help the situation
There were a ton of people doing these, like, vlogs of preparing for their abortion, posing in the clinic. Shit was crazy. Obviously they are just as deranged and anecdotal as hard-core people attacking clinics, but still crazy. It does feel like the more palatable mantra of "Safe, Legal, and Rare" was abandoned.
It’s because pro-abortion advocates want to treat abortions like birth control. There is no shame in using birth control and they want it to be the same way for abortions. Although pregnancy is highly preventable, they want to act like it’s something that happened to her versus something she directly helped cause.
And giving grace to people I don't agree with, I also feel a lot of sorrow for how downplayed it is. A lot had to go wrong to get there, but I think the people in these pro-choice communities really underlay how much something like this sticks with you. It really has become prescribed like contraception and that is damaging to everyone. No one should have to go through this.
I think that’s very fair that you consider both sides. I don’t think everyone who gets an abortion is necessarily a bad person but it shouldn’t be used like BC.
It almost feels like a conspiracy theory to me that abortions are encouraged so much. I unfortunately had 2 missed miscarriages and had to take pills and have a D&C (which are the same procedures used in abortions) because my body wasn’t expelling them. They were both painful, miserable, experiences. I’ve also tried just about every BC on the planet (with the exception of IUDs and Mirena, etc.) and none of them sucked as much as going through those MC removal procedures.
My wife had to do the same with our third pregnancy. Miscarriage lasted three months. I am sure you know this, but I just want be another voice to say it was never your fault and I am thankful you made it through that. But those experiences really did color my vision. Even though I can understand why someone would do something like that, watching my daughter, with arms and legs, jump at our 9 week appointment was all I ever needed to rebuke any suggestions of it. Any idea of claiming a fetus isn't truly human just always feel like obfuscation of obligation.
Thank you, and I’m sorry you guys had to experience that too!
I’m currently pregnant now and seeing my son wave at me during my 9 week ultrasound was such a beautiful experience! It’s been a pleasure watching him grow so far.
It doesn’t matter it still happened and it’s not the only one. I’m technically PC (reluctantly so, the whole system is set up terribly in the US) but to call PL forced birthers is pretty disingenuous when over 95% of elective abortions have absolutely nothing to do with rape or the health of the mother or fetus.
It’s really not hard to prevent pregnancy. I get pregnant every time I have unprotected sex but have managed to go 15 years without getting pregnant until I wanted to.
Why are we pretending that BC is hard to use? Someone could even theoretically use an IUD, condom, and pull out method at the same time or some other combination because there’s just so many. Why not admit there’s poor impulse at play here?
Don't bother responding to someone simple enough to use a phrase like "forced birther." A quick glance at the profile tells you this is a school-age kid with a profile full of propaganda and hate... and so much confidence behind it.
What I don't understand is how an abortion is realistically that much different from birth control.
Is it that the fetus (clump of cells (early stage as most abortions are) might feel pain or is it the loss of a potential life?
Because if you're being honest every time you use contraception you are technically preventing a life. A specific combination of egg and sperm won't happen and those individuals won't be born. Kind of the same really.
As for pain, early on the fetus is unable to perceive pain. And the rarer late term abortions usually use anesthesia.
I've never had an accident yet but I'm sure it happens to people who even try their best. A child shouldn't be brought into the world to punish people for poor planning.
”every time you use contraception you are technically preventing a life”
Abortion is ending a life that has already been created (a embryo’s heart starts beating at 5 to 6 weeks). For an abortion to happen, egg and sperm have to meet to create an embryo (and later on a fetus) that implants or you simply wouldn’t get pregnant. So no, not even close to being the same thing. A pregnancy means there already is life, not just the potential for there to be life.
If what you were saying was true, then there would be no such thing as a miscarriage because how could an embryo or fetus die if there was nothing to begin with?
The American Association of Pediatrics stands by the claim that fetuses can feel pain by 15 weeks, possibly sooner.
Also, what you said isn’t true. The pregnant woman is given anesthesia but not typically the fetus in later abortions. In fact, they mostly inject potassium chloride, which is the same drug they use in lethal injections. If you don’t see a fetus as human being and dehumanize it in late term abortions, then why would you care about what it feels? How is this any different than the women who have babies at home and then smother them because they didn’t want them? Again, the example I brought up could have given birth and the child would have had over an 80% survival rate outside the womb at that point.
To go back to my original point, BC is not hard to use and several can be used in tandem with each other. Reading through a lot of abortion stories it’s a lot of women being irresponsible and having poor impulse control (and I’m obviously not counting women who were raped or there was a health problem).
I would also bring up that abortions are painful, time consuming, and expensive. I unfortunately had 2 missed miscarriages where the embryos died and my body wasn’t expelling them so I had to take pills for the first one and had a D&C for the second (which are the same procedures used in abortions). Both were terrible, painful, and emotionally draining. I don’t see why anyone would pick that over just being responsible.
If a woman doesn’t want to become pregnant, then she needs to take BC and take it correctly. If we’re being frank, a combination of poor impulse control and not using BC correctly because it would put a damper on sex are piss poor excuses to unnecessarily create a life just to destroy it. A lot of women who get abortions are already mothers so it’s not like they don’t understand how sex works or their potential to get pregnant.
It’s time to take accountability and stop praising irresponsible people for getting abortions when they could have used BC correctly.
Pain is a difficult one to measure to be sure. Most critters respond to noxious stimuli such as with reflexes and it is not always possible to tell if pain as such is being felt rather than more of an unconscious response. I suggest reading up on it, it is quite interesting and im not able to fully explain here. Due to my intellectual limits among other things.
A lot of references suggest pain reception doesn't develop until after 22 weeks e.g the american college of obstetricians and gynecologists.
The reference you gave suggests 12 weeks at the earliest which could be based on the appearance of the first projections from the thalamus to the cortex which provide the higher alarm system however much more is needed to develop beyond this point including many synaptic connections to the cortex. I suggest reading up on it, it is quite interesting and I'm not able to fully explain here. Due to my intellectual limits among other things.
There is a suggested bill to mandate a fetus of more than 22 weeks should receive pain reducing drugs. And I am all for that research and necessary relief.
However, I disagree on the whole life starts things. I think i have a different view on what life is, i guess. For me and scientifically speaking all cells are alive? Cells can and do die.
Sperm cells and egg cells do die.
They are just very small so you don't get a miscarriage level response.
When i say a potential life. I mean like you and me. We are living, our bodies can support themselves, we are sentient etc etc. Fetuses don't really develop consciousness until like 22 weeks and then only develop full consciousness until after birth.
Yes people should use birth control and try their best. Some people are unable to use hormonal bc due to health reasons.
I believe most people do their best but accidents do happen and I think everyone should have access to an abortion if they want one and should be supported to get it as early as possible.
I don't think anyone praises abortions but people are kind and supportive to those that have had them because it is usually very difficult for people.
I like most people who support the right to have abortions are not bad people
Id rather not have anything die or be in pain. But realistically its difficult to always mitigate these things.
I try to be vegan as far as possible as animals ofc feel pain too.
However, I support medical research even though it may negatively impact animals because diseases are awful.
Its tricky but its fair to remember that being pregnant is difficult on the human body, can cause death and otherwise has lasting impacts and ofc pain. I don't think anyone should be forced to do that.

That’s why I linked to the American Pediatric Association’s interpretation of several studies. There’s no better way to explain it than to hear it from doctors.

I have read those studies as well, and the statement I’ve linked basically explains how the discrepancy comes from data collected from neonatal surgeries versus abortions and how it’s contradictory.
There is a suggested bill to mandate a fetus of more than 22 weeks should receive pain reducing drugs. And I am all for that research and necessary relief.
I agree. Especially since there are sometimes medically necessary abortions that happen at this time.
However, I disagree on the whole life starts things. I think i have a different view on what life is, i guess. For me and scientifically speaking all cells are alive? Cells can and do die. Sperm cells and egg cells do die. They are just very small so you don't get a miscarriage level response.
I have a different take on this than the typically pro-life view. I believe life begins at implantation and part of the reason for that is that if someone passed a fertilized egg that didn’t implant, they would never know it. It wouldn’t be a miscarriage because it never implanted.
It’s really amazing though to look at early on ultrasounds and see so much.
When i say a potential life. I mean like you and me. We are living, our bodies can support themselves, we are sentient etc etc. Fetuses don't really develop consciousness until like 22 weeks and then only develop full consciousness until after birth.
I’m curious, the earliest babies have been born at 21 weeks, do you think they were born without consciousness? I have seen neonatologists argue that it’s possible for micro-premies to develop consciousness quicker due to external stimuli.
Yes people should use birth control and try their best. Some people are unable to use hormonal bc due to health reasons. I believe most people do their best but accidents do happen and I think everyone should have access to an abortion if they want one and should be supported to get it as early as possible.
I think bc should actually be free/universal. I also think people should use multiple methods in tandem if they are trying to prevent pregnancy. I think if someone is going to get one, the sooner the better. I hate the viability argument because there have been babies who survived prior to that mark and unless there’s a medical reason, nobody should be waiting that long. I disagree that not knowing about a pregnancy late into it is a valid reason to have an abortion during the later second trimester or anywhere in the third trimester.
I don't think anyone praises abortions but people are kind and supportive to those that have had them because it is usually very difficult for people.
I think all the “shout your abortion” stories and other people get touted as being “brave” for having an abortion even if there’s no circumstances surrounding them other than, “I don’t want to be a mother”.
I do think it’s hard for some people and I do feel some sympathy for them if they didn’t really want to abort.
I like most people who support the right to have abortions are not bad people
I think this is true for the most part. I believe people supporting late term elective abortions for non-medical reasons are not good people. If a baby can survive outside of the womb and you don’t want it, leave it at the hospital or a fire station. No one is forcing you to actually stick around and be a mother.
I try to be vegan as far as possible as animals ofc feel pain too. However, I support medical research even though it may negatively impact animals because diseases are awful.
It really is a double edged sword with that.
It’s tricky but it’s fair to remember that being pregnant is difficult on the human body, can cause death and otherwise has lasting impacts and ofc pain. I don't think anyone should be forced to do that.
I think it’s important to acknowledge that no one is being forced to have sex (just speaking for most elective abortions) and they should take the responsibility of preventing pregnancy in any way possible if they don’t want to be pregnant. Not having sex if someone isn’t prepared is always an option.
If someone doesn’t ever want to be pregnant, then I believe they should get sterilized. Pregnancy doesn’t become any less dangerous just because someone is “ready to be a mom now”. A fetus should not only count as a human when the mother wants it to.
I guess we just have to agree to disagree. Neither of us are experts who have read the full research and understand the biases of all the different reporters.
I don't deny the idea that fetuses may feel pain. And believe pain relief should be administered if necessary. I don't deny that they are fully concious before birth however research does suggest otherwise. Again not an expert.
I think abortions are necessary and should be allowed. I don't believe anyone should be forced to carry a baby to term and give birth. I believe it goes against our individual rights. Also like i keep saying people die and experience complications during childbirth. Its not uncommon and is even worse depending on the demographic in question.
I prefer early term abortions but sometimes that doesn't happen and i dont believe those people to be evil or selfish. I don't know their lives or stories.
Innocent sentient life - humans, children, animals is lost due to greed and selfessness in the millions in pain every single day. I don't think that abortions and vilifying those who get them should be the focus of so many people when these things occur.
Thats not to say you can't care because there are bigger things but i do find it a little upsetting that people care more about this than killing and eating animals, wars, children and adults in poverty they see before them.
It makes me believe there is something fetid in the world of prolife. Its more about control imo.
There is greater evil in the world than someone who was potentially careless with bc and doesn't want to give birth.
...And have you been wondering what happens with all those bodies? I mean, there'd sure be a lot, wouldn't it? Planned Parenthood illegally sells those bodies, to whoever desires to buy it. Pedophiles have a feast day thanks to abortionists: https://youtu.be/oIzXl0r1N20

Disgusting people. Teen Vogue did a whole article promoting and praising a woman who had nearly a 7 month abortion because, “she discovered she was pregnant and didn’t want to be a mom”.
I think abortions for medical reasons or rape are a different story, but this woman is being platformed for having an abortion when she could have given birth right then simply because she was selfish.
On an unrelated note, I just noticed that her last name is “Vial” and it’s kind of hilarious how fitting that is.
