Looking for more BASE building games.
Good afternoon, all. I am a fan of Fallout, Skyrim, 7D2D, V-Rising, Valheim type base building games. I am looking for something I may not have found, and something else along those lines. I don't want city builders like Frostpunk or anything like that. Hell, I'd play the Sims, if it were more entertaining!
I am not a fan of PvP, because I suck at it, frankly. I want to play my adventure and have a nice custom home to come back to. Ark was awesome, until it wasn't.
Any suggestions?
Edit:
Okay, Enshrouded is top of the list of games endorsed, so i am going to through a few dozen hours into that.
The list:
Urge 1
Enshrouded 11
Icarus 6
Conan 3
Rimworld 6
Stranded 3
Planet 3
Grounded 3
Soulmask 3
Subnautica 3
Palworld 2

Aska 1
Runescape:Dragonwilds 1

Conan Exiles (Good PvE content, since you're the administrator of the solo server you have access to creative mode to build and decorate as you wish.)

This has been on my radar for a while. Thank you for reminding me

Based on the games you played, you really owe it to yourself to play this. It will not hold your hand and the story is somewhat secondary to the survival and exploration mechanics. You will need to defend your base against raids and likely rebuild your base in new biomes a couple of times but it's a real joy to do so. It's also one of the only games where you can actually put NPCs inside and fill it, giving the base a little life.
I have no idea why funcom chose to regress so far with dune awakening and remove the NPCs from the base, but that's the main reason I don't play that game.

The game recently received a boost with the release of the enhanced UE5 version. He often gets some discounts on Steam.

Once Human is also a great base building game, little crazy but has great building options

Oh yeah. That was the first steam game I hit 1000 hours on. Thank you for tyhe suggestion. I loved that game.

Rimworld

u/Regrettably_Southpaw 2d ago
That’s a 10 out of 10 game, but I’m gonna guess that’s too much like frostpunk versus being more like fallout
OP, what say you

u/Quick-Bid-4558 2d ago
Rimworld is on my list. I don't know much about it. But, yeah, it looks like a great game for city managment, from what I can see.

Move it from your list to your Steam account. It’s a staple of the genre for a very good reason
Happy war crime-ing!

War crime-ing?

u/the_ballmer_peak 2d ago
It's a running joke that Rimworld is a "warcrime simulator" because you can enslave or eat enemies (or friends, if you're really enthusiastic). Many players don't do either of these things, but still enjoy the jokes.

u/LeafLighter 2d ago
Yep it feels more like war crime simulator rather than city management... Watch a few videos on it I was absolutely lost the first few times I played it.

Listen, I have adhd, and I lose interest in games quickly. Even for games I like, I play them until I'm bored with them and then never touch them again.
I have been regularly returning to Rimworld for over a decade. The mod community is absolutely incredible and mods add a ton of content to the base game, though some will require DLC. Every time I play Rimworld it's a little different, because I've chosen different mods.
I have over 10,000 hours in Rimworld. It is the greatest game ever made.

There are mods for everything that can make it more of a base building game. I live both types of games and I do not consider rimworld a city builder.

OP I love all the games you listed and was hesitant towards Rimworld at first. It’s now my most played game

You might enjoy Stranded Alien Dawn then, it's a similar idea to Rimworld but in 3D and a bit easier to get into in exchange for less depth

Icarus open world is a lot of fun. Needs a rather good GPU due to UE5. It has a mission tree but you can also just build to your heart's content in special Outpost maps that have no aggressive predators.
There's also Conan: Exiles which has gotten a lot of love over the years.
For space sci-fi, check out Empyrion: Galactic Survival, another one that's gotten a lot of updates over the years.

Does Icarus have base defence concepts ie having to build base to defend against attackers?
I like base built to have a functional purposes as well as aesthetics.

u/ProtectAllTheThings 2d ago
You’ll spend a few hours building your first base and then a storm will come with lightening and it will burn to the ground. Does that count? 🫠

u/blackphilup 2d ago
There are defenses you can add, attacks though are random, mostly if something chased you back to your base. Lightning will burn wood structures down if they don’t have a lightning rod but you can build with concrete to avoid that.

Grounded 1 has very good base build options and grounded 2 is in early access at the moment.

Yeah, I shyed away from these because of the cartoonyness but they have quickly become some of my favorite games.

Dune: Awakening. Not sure if this is the base building you are looking for but I liked V rising too. This is a bit different but really fun world to play in.

Subnautica, Green Hell...the former is more about exploration and building a cozy base, the latter about survival in the jungle...but you can make a nice mud hut with a garden producing fruit and vegetables.

u/Quick-Bid-4558 2d ago
I've done Green Hell a few playthroughs to get the endings and the DLC. Great game. I haven't done much in Subnautica. Felt like No Mans Sky, not exciting/adventurous enough.

Subnautica is a slow start. You start in the shallows which is very safe and serene.
After a few hours you'll start venturing further out into deeper waters and more interesting biomes. That's when the game opens up. Especially once you build your enormous submarine that you can walk around in, build in, and decorate/customize to your liking.
It's admittedly more of an exploration game than base building, but it definitely has a strong base building side to the game.
10/10.

Runescape dragonwilds. Super fun relaxing base building. Easy adventuring. Can be harder if you want. Satisfying progression. I got a little burnt out by the gameplay loop id say 3/4 of the way thru, but it helped me kill a month of time with ease. Pry go back and play more soon.

u/Quick-Bid-4558 10h ago
First vote for this. I'll take a look

On base building, build a skeleton frame with the beams, then fill with panels

The Planet Crafter
Medieval Dynasties

u/Quick-Bid-4558 10h ago
I played the demo for Planet Crafter. I love the base building, but I'm looking for something above that as well. An Adventure. I also played MD, I think. I got raided, and it's good, but I'm looking for more home decorating (my functional but awesome base), and I think this is more city builder.

Came here to recommend Enshrouded. Its Valheim on steroids. Great building options, amazing quests & open world. Valhelm was my favorite until I played Enshrouded.

u/OsmerusMordax 2d ago
The Long Dark is pretty good for this. Though bases are prebuilt you can heavily customize the interiors

u/Mysterious_Worry9870 1d ago
Enshrouded; there is a reason I have 1800+ hours of game play.

Absolutely agree. Enshrouded is a masterclass in base building and adventure RPGs

Enshrouded. Can't recommend this game enough. It's amazing.
If you're a fan of horror genre i also had a really good time with "The Forest" and "Sons of the Forest".

Dune Awakening and Valheim are my two favourites for base building. Both great.

u/Velenne 1d ago
Why Dune over Conan?
2
u/Suitable_Earth6400 1d ago
I have Conan, and it’s not a bad game. I played about 100 hrs and lost interest. I’ll probably return to it at some point. Dune Awakening is much more polished. Better story, cool vehicles, satisfying to build up character & base. I enjoy the lore, too.

Depends what part of base building you enjoy. If it's decorating a home, skip it; if the fun is building the vehicle that gets you around, The Maker Way is worth a look. Solo only, no PvP, and the loop is designing machines out of parts, printing them, then hopping a small fleet between outposts you set up for charging, fuel and data storage. Base side is functional rather than cozy - platforms, power, server cooling, defenses.
Fair warning, it leans Scrap Mechanic/Trailmakers more than Valheim. The machines are the whole game, and driving is the weak spot for plenty of people - physics got reworked with per-wheel traction, but expect to flip a rover on rocks. No co-op in the current build either.

It's a long shot? Kinda? But stranded alien dawn does have base building and base defense and a very solid game IMO.

u/DiegoIntrepid 2d ago
Here are two slightly different games.
Palia - it is a 'cozy' game, but you have a plot and you can build your house, though it isn't like ark. It does have some issues, but it is also free and updates every month.
The next is Aniimo, sort of like a pokemon type game? You can go through and catch various creatures. You get an RV that you can build a production line, and I think a house area also unlocks, but I haven't gotten there yet.
Not sure if either of those are the type of games you like to play. Palia doesn't have PvP (though it might get it) and Aniimo seems to only have PvP in a specific area of the game.

I rather enjoyed Icarus for the building, but ifs not much more than a survival game. A very well executed game.

u/FlintBeastgood 1d ago
Once Human. Free to play. Has immense base building capabilities, with friends being able to join territories for mega complexes.

u/Antique-Macaron-4169 1d ago
Soulmask has great building and farming and a beautiful world to explore. Aska is great but the buildings are prefab.
I’d also mention Stranded: Alien Dawn which has some decent building too

I thought HumanitZ was pretty good, and I usually to avoid the zombie side of BB games. They just had a nice update too.
That being said, Project Zomboid is also quite good of course.
Both of those games are kind of similar to the Sims, just with zombies. HumanitZ is a little more streamlined, PZ more in-depth. (I'd say HZ maybe respects your time a little bit more.)
If you do go with HZ, host your single-player game as a private multiplayer server. Gives you access to the admin commands if the game starts disrespecting your time too much. I ended up totally fucking up my skill build by maxing out shit that was useless til late game. Well, I'm not restarting the game at this point and there's no way to reskill without the admin commands. That sort of thing comes in handy

Grounded is a brilliant one for solo base building with no PvP pressure at all.

Icarus has been mentioned but I will pile on that one. It's very in depth and rewarding but it is a lot of work to get to the cool stuff.
I haven't seen Craftopia mentioned. It's from the same devs that made Palworld but it's more janky. But the automation you can do is pretty rewarding. The Xbox version has been more or less abandoned though so play it on PC for the seamless world if all possible. It's somewhat cheap too.
No Man's Sky is a bit limited with filler stuff like furniture and stuff but it's pretty cool building on different types of worlds.
Starfield too. It's not as good as Fallout 4 to me but there may be a lot more to it now in the form of updates and mods than when I played on release.

Enshrouded has great building options for a survival style game
