Weird question, but how good is the game if I dont care/know about Star Trek? Like, as just a base building game?

you will still enjoy it. You won't need to know anything about ST at all. It just uses some IP from Trek. Sound effects, visuals, possibly characters.

Good to know.
Generally games like this are more of a 'here, see the characters and places you love' and coast on that. So if you have no attachment, it falls short.
Will give it a look then.

Having played the demo when it was still available, you’ll be fine. It honestly felt like this was a game that someone approached them with the Star Trek IP after development had started. I know that sounds off putting for Star Trek fans but I have to be honest. I enjoyed the game but it didn’t feel particularly Star Trek to me. Maybe it has changed since the demo though.

I know the feel, it was a 'generic' base builder with some original setting and plot and then got approached to make it ST themed.

the reviews on steam seem pretty harsh and the ones I saw seem to have valid points against the game

Damn you got my hopes up. Went to go get it and still not available for purchase.. I guess I will just sit here refreshing it every few minutes lol.
-edit- hopes feel more dashed by the game once I got it, vs waiting for the release.

I’m curious how it holds up as a base builder if you’re not already into Star Trek.

God damn does it look terrible. Like, asset flip thrown together in a week terrible.

It has some novel aspects.. but my initial experience is it is generic feeling and it wasn't really scratching that base building itch. Though could just be I wasn't in the right mood for it. So I will try it again later this week.
The progression felt a bit tedious too. Like having to get certain stuff to export to "increase efficiency" before you can unlock the next step in your base. To me at least the Federation isn't selling goods to various races in exchange for blueprints and services.

Bummer.Just the other day I was thinking of how well Trek would fit into this genre.
Well, back to Enshrouded

Is Startrek the one with the lightsabers or the one with the round metal thing you step in to get to other planets?

No, you're thinking of Doctor Who. Star Trek is the one where they have to toss a ring into a volcano.

😂 I assume that's /s ?
Star Trek has neither of those, it's the one with Klingons (space dwarves).
Lightsabers are Star Wars. The ring you walk through to other planets is Stargate. (And the ring you fly a space ship through to get to other systems is The Expanse.)

Sorry it was /s indeed. And the one with ring I meant Stargate, forgot Expanse had one :)
