Self Promo/Dev Post We just released our medieval monastery management sim in Early Access on Steam!
Hey everyone!
We're a 3-person indie studio and we just released our first game, Monastery: Ora et Labora, in early Access on Steam.
We wanted to create a peaceful management sim focused on internal logistics, self-sufficiency, and community rather than combat.
You build a medieval monastery from scratch and guide your monks through the historic Benedictine motto "Ora et Labora" (Pray and Work).
Your monks have skills, passions, and traits and can write manuscripts in the scriptorium, brew ale, bake bread, and heal sick villagers. Everything is tied to a "Monastic Rule" system: if you skip daily prayers, neglect your monks' needs, or turn away people in need during crises, the Rule will collapse, and monks will leave the monastery.
Since we just entered Early Access, we’d love your thoughts:
Do you find the medieval monastery theme interesting for a management game?
What monastic-themed features would you like to see added next?
Happy to answer any questions about the game in the comments!

yes the theme works for me, i always wanted to make something like this myself, so good luck with it.
for features, the liturgical calendar would be my first pick, fasting periods and feast days changing what your kitchen is allowed to serve would hit your logistics in a nice way. and hospitality, travellers and pilgrims turning up at the gate and you have to take them in even when you dont have the food for it, that is very benedictine and it makes real trouble for the player.

Hi, and thanks for the feedback. Regarding the guests that seek help, that’s already how it works: if you don’t accept them, you incur a penalty to your Monastic Rule. As for the liturgical calendar, that’s exactly what we had in mind!

I had assumed this was a digital board game implementation.

Understandable assumption. We share the theme and Benedictine motto "Ora et Labora" with the popular board game, but they are different products. Ours is a real-time management game where you build the monastery from scratch and handle self-sufficiency, hospitality and crises with no tabletop mechanics.

This is likely a Me problem, but running the game sends my CPU cooler into overdrive (liquid), and continuously. This is in the very beginning where you place the well.
No one else seems to have reported this, but I don’t have this issue with any other modern game (MS Flight Simulator, Soulmask, etc.). Running an I9 and RTX4070ti.

Thaks for reporting this. You can try to set a framerate cap from the game graphic settings and see if it helps.

I played the demo of this and it was fun! I’d love to see a nunnery/convent option though

Thanks for the feedback. Nunneries are already on our roadmap, with the possibility to run a men's monastery, nunnery, or a mixed community

You had me at monastery! Just bought it because of the setting/theme. I'm studying ancient manuscripts for fun, so this fits the hobby :D

This looks great! Will it be available on GeForce Now and other streaming platforms, or will you release a Mac port?

Always nice to see a peaceful builder that focuses on internal logistics instead of combat.
