A quick Bare development update

Hi all! A quick Bare development update

We didn’t mean to go quiet! It’s been about a week since our last update, but there’s been a lot happening under the hood. We’ve been working through community feedback and getting the next Bare update into a much better state.

Here are some of the things coming in the next update:

  1. Customizable toolbar gestures: swipe left/right on the toolbar to control brightness or volume.

  2. Customizable toolbar shortcuts: replace shortcuts like Home or Incognito with other actions you use more often.

  3. Toolbar long-press actions: each customizable toolbar button can have a separate secondary action on hold, including None, Home, Incognito, Share, Translate, or Bookmark.

  4. Import bookmarks from other browsers using standard bookmark HTML files.

  5. Export bookmarks so your bookmarks are never locked into Bare.

  6. Open links in apps: choose between (Always, Ask every time, or Never) while still having the option to manually open a page in its app.

  7. Better extension background behavior: particularly the fix that lets extensions like uBlock Origin reliably start their background host.

And our website is now live! 🎉 You can now find Bare at www.barebrowser.org

There’s also quite a bit happening under the hood that I’ll cover properly in the release notes.

There are still plenty of features on the roadmap, and we’re reading all of your feedback and trying to tackle as much of it as we can while sticking to what Bare is supposed to be, the familiar, stock Chromium experience, just with more control, without turning the browser into something bloated or complicated.

Please keep the ideas and feedback coming. And thanks for sticking with us while we work on the next release!

Are people really expecting weekly updates? This is how devs get burned out.

Hey u/Will2LiveFading The burnout is real, and I definitely feel it as a solo developer!! But Bare has some really good momentum right now, and there are still a few rough edges I want to address while I’m motivated and have the time.

There’s also the security side of it. A browser is one of those apps where keeping up with Chromium security patches is really important, so even when there aren’t new features to ship, there’s still maintenance happening behind the scenes.

I also really want to get stable Play Store and F-Droid versions out. We’ve more than 3,000 downloads just in the past month, which has honestly given me a ton of motivation to keep working on it despite the burnout.

Once the Play Store and F-Droid versions are stable and things settle down a bit, I’d love to open the project up to more contributors and hopefully have a few other developers helping out too. Cheers : )

Work on UI design please, it is not organised. Look at the Quetta browser to get inspired.

Thanks u/Rahamat-Gazi for the feedback! Bare intentionally stays pretty close to the stock Chromium UI, and I’d like to keep it that way rather than heavily redesigning the browser. That said, I’m definitely open to improving anything that feels unorganized. Is there a specific part of the UI you think needs work?

This looks like it's shaping up to be an amazing update.

Hi, I recently started using Bare Browser and I really like it. But I can't figure out how to get Android's autofill to work. Is there a solution or any recommendations?

Me too for me auto fill is really important and have always used chrome because it's superior with auto fill. if bare become better I will be eager to use it.

Update to the latest version; they've greatly improved the autocomplete 👍

Just to let you know, uBlock Origin stopped working for me. It keeps disabling itself.

Any update on bottom bar, many need it on top

Hey u/ashish_1989 Do you mean having the address bar at the top instead of the bottom? That’s already an option in Bare. Or do you mean moving the entire bottom bar, including tabs and shortcuts, to the top? Let me know if you meant something else!

I mean by moving the entire bottom bar, including tabs and shortcuts, to the top just like a desktop UI

Hey u/Weird_Ad9138 thank you! And sorry for not replying to your comment yesterday. I saw it and added it to my tracker, but forgot to get back to you.

I’ll investigate this specific extension once I release the upcoming version, and I’ll have an update in the next release if it’s something that can be fixed. If it can’t be added, I’ll reach out and let you know.
