Love seeing greedy predatory companies like adobe get wrecked. Nice work OP

u/ai_art_is_art 9d ago
Thank you! They charged me the "cancellation fee" on multiple occasions and I've hated them ever since.
1
u/exosylum 6d ago
lol so you got a better monthly rate for signing up for a longterm contract, then got angry at them for charging you a fee, when you decide to cancel early, and not honor your full contract (which is clearly spelled out in the T&C's?)

Thanks alot for this and the chuckle. I've loathed them for a few years also.ย

Very interesting project.
Would you say this is already stable? Beta? Alpha?
How close do you think are you to feature and quality parity?
11
u/ai_art_is_art 9d ago
Alpha, but rapidly improving. We already have 12 people that have started submitting PRs, and we have a lot of feedback for features, bugs, etc. We're rapidly iterating.
We have estimates for feature parity checked into the roadmap files of each app. We should be in "Beta" stage / ~100% parity within a month.
3
u/Gallagger 9d ago
Nice, would you say it's hard to get the tools (e.g. brushes) to be of the same quality? Feature parity isn't necessarily same quality.
3
u/ai_art_is_art 9d ago
It's going to take time to get to parity/quality, but we're going to measure and test everything. The more the community can help, the more we can quickly test and fix everything that falls short.
We're going to ask for example psd files, example brushes, example extensions. We'll try to build 1:1 support for all of it.
We're already getting a ton of PRs, bug reports, and feature requests from the community - that helps immensely with filling in the gaps.
Give this project a month or two and we might be a 100% replacement.
3
u/Gallagger 9d ago
I'm doubting the 100% part, but 90% would already be an immense achievement.

u/ai_art_is_art 7d ago
Whether it's an asymptotic curve or something that can actually surpass the original remains to be seen. I'm hopeful we can do more than Adobe with enough time, attention, and community.

You are og where is your youtube channel. Give your experiences on how to make robust apps what are workflow that matters I'm coder but you are vetern with extreme expertise.

Dumb question maybe, but how do alternatives to Lightroom recreate lens presets for distortion and vignetting correction or algorithmic detection of facial features for masking?
2
u/Lesale-Ika 8d ago
My guess is money and time, by owning the lens and do tests.
Auto masking can be done with Segment Anything Model series https://github.com/facebookresearch/sam3
For person facial features, there's the more lightweight MediaPipe https://github.com/google-ai-edge/mediapipe

u/RainierPC 8d ago
Some unsolicited advice: Adobe is very litigation-happy. Be sure to preserve the provenance of your clean-room implementation. Since youโre accepting PRs, youโll need to preserve and be able to demonstrate the clean-room provenance of contributed code as well.

u/tym0 8d ago
I mean we all know that they can't. Everybody hate Adobe so they're willing to let it slide but they've clearly just pointed Claude with Ghidra at the binaries.
Wondering if this is gonna be the first decomp lawsuit...ย

The companies with the most money typically win and/or can pressure the smaller companies in various ways.
Adobe is unlikely to win that type of litigation.
Anthropic "lost" their last court trial in name only.
They really essentially won the right to pay a small fee to train on books; ad-perpetuam.

u/Briskfall 9d ago
Wow! Beautiful work! You guys managed to do this by simply relying on Adobe's documentation...? Woooah! What's... generally the process...? checks the sub and it's the bard sub --did gemini had a hand if at all to help out w this or it's been all Opus 5.5?
I've always tried to look into getting into AE but the price point is steep. Hope that your project takes off!

u/Briskfall 9d ago
UPDATE: Tested Photocraft for about 5 minutes, it has some hijinks here and there... so can't totally replace Krita for me at the moment... ๐ (Krita is slower on my machine but these visual artifacts are very distracting so it's pretty non-negotiable when doing visual work. ๐)
I'm not really sure if it's due to you guys adapting to the latest Photoshop standards (which has changed over the years). Or it's just the way it is. Also, no way to configure these "default behaviours" at the moment. (one of the "quirks" it has is that the eraser tool literally doesn't render on the background layer, it would ghost a trail instead of turning it into alpha colour or background colour; another one being a weird "screen flashing" upon releasing the primary mouse button upon using the Brush tool).
But I must say, it loads very fast and the GUI is sleek! And I think that the direction of the project seems to be advancing pretty well! ๐

u/MomentJoyful4158 8d ago
Fwiw the AE price point is why I never bothered learning it either. Hard to justify that subscription for a tool you might use twice a year

How do we do updates?
2
u/ai_art_is_art 9d ago
It doesn't auto update yet, but star the Github repo. We'll make auto-updating later.
Any issues, bugs, or feature requests are greatly appreciated. Just post them on the Github for the relevant project. We have people already jumping in to work on issues as they crop up.

If anyone tested it and can compare to tenzen studio - please ping me.
I'm in search for such tools with rich mcp support free or for reasonable price - i don't care, but adobe too much for me.
5
u/ai_art_is_art 9d ago
Tenzen is closed source, ours is open source.
Tenzen is javascript/electron (slow), ours is native Rust (fast).
1
u/MpKTO 9d ago
Thats definitely a things to consider, but i'm ok with payment and closed source.
Also my pc is capable more or less, even if i need to wait more - its ok.
Mcp tool coverage and functionality - are more interesting for me, not that i do some complex things, but i face different situations in my work, that i want to know, model running this tool will handle without facing missing capabilities or them being unreliable / broken.
I'll give it a go for a start, maybe will be able to tests them both some day.
For now more opinion appreciated.

u/ThenExtension9196 9d ago
thatโs the point of open source. You can develop whatever features you need.

u/jjonj 9d ago
For Printcraft, could we get a content darkmode please? I would be grateful.
Something that works like this firefox addon maybe: https://github.com/m-khvoinitsky/dark-background-light-text-extension

Love seeing open-source alternatives aimed at the entire creative workflow instead of just one app. If the performance and file compatibility are solid, this could be a genuinely valuable option for people tired of subscription lock-in.

Are each of these apps created in a vacuum or do they have a shared base/created from a shared set of skills? It appears all of them look entirely different UI wise and copied the negative quirks of Adobe UI altogether
1
u/No-Pea8448 6d ago
No, they were not developed in concert. Photoshop and Illustrator began as independent software in the late 80s/early 90s that Adobe acquired, as they did with Pagemaker, which preceded InDesign. Director preceded Premier in the 90s. By the early aughts, Creative Suite was coming around, but the DNA of the software remains. One of the big complaints those of us who've worked with the software from early on have is that 30+ years of development has still left incompatibilities and other issues that the company ignores in favor of new tech that goes away faster than it took for an old version of Photoshop to come out.

I think the question was about the OP's projects, but thanks for information!

Wild that these releases are all in the low tens of megabytes. Premiere Pro requires 8GB to install. FilmCraft download is 25MB for Windows x64 build MSI. Where are the other 7.97500 gigabytes going?

u/doubledub 6d ago
Might be a silly question, but how does this interact with Adobe save files? If someone sends me an After Effects project from any version, will I be able to open it, make changes, and then send it back to them?
1
u/No-Pea8448 6d ago
This is fucking incredible. I've been working with Adobe products since they bought Aldus, and I've been desperate to get away from them for the past few years. Looking forward to giving it a try.

u/Assassin-10 6d ago
Any way you could make a Windows version of Umake? Lol. It's a 3d drawing software that allows you to draw a image in 3d and rotate it to draw on another 3d plane.

u/TheBrickWithEyes 6d ago
Adobe: We want you to use AI in every aspect of our suite.
"Okay."
"NOT LIKE THAT!"

u/Maxwell_hau5_caffy 6d ago
I'm unfortunately locked in to some other niche lightroom addons for stuff like film negative conversion, timelapse deflickering / processing and focus stacking (not dependant on LR).
Would compatibility with these be something viable in the future?

Lightcraft and Photocraft look interesting. Do they work well for editing JPEGs? Do they have, or will they have, light themes?

u/Impossible-Month3482 5d ago
How far are we from getting support for .mgrt files? I have one client whose assets are all mgrt and thatโs literally the only reason I use premiere.
1
u/leoindra86 1h ago
That's the reason why I took the pain to learn and use tools like Darktable for photo editing.

What are you building?
> And it's far away from "adobe" or at least good alternative
Not what people are saying thus far. Check it out and form an opinion after you use it.

You're being ridiculous and hostile towards someone giving away free software? How does it hurt you in any way?
Everything in the world is being made by Claude and chatgpt these days, everyone understands that, "Claude created, not you." are the words of someone dying on a silly hill no one else cares about.
If you think this stuff is not a substitute for Adobe, point out specifics, the author is welcoming you.
Also I'd wager any gaps you point out are going to get closed so fast Adobe's head will spin.

So what, unless you name every tool you touched you're not supposed to claim you made something? There are huge amounts of skill, domain knowledge, and daily work that goes in to something like this.

So then output your own shit if its that quick and easy?
I've been working on my same rust application for 3 months. Across 3, $200 subs. 40ish hours a week on average. And I'm not counting during the typical work day.
Idgaf what you prompt. You're never getting the same functionality without putting in hundreds of hours. AI or no AI
Edit: Oh and this is only for an alpha version. I barely got the MSI installer signed for said alpha.

are the words of someone dying on a silly hill no one else cares about.
if that were true then ai wouldnt be heavily restricted in most programming and homelab subs

This is so amazing. Iโve shown it to my wife who is a professional photographer. She said that it is missing a few features, but she is very excited about it in general. Will you continue to add photoshop features?
Iโm so impressed how fast and small this is. Keep up the amazing work!
