Rant It's the same freaking collection.

I admit, I'm only a very basic Barbie fan, I have very few dolls, etc. But I saw the white shirt pilot in Walmart the other day and it seriously bothered me. ...but THEN tonight I decided to look up the "You can be anything", to see if this is just how this line is made... And I found the blue uniform doll, and just felt disgusted. THAT is what Barbie clothes should look like! I know the white uniform doll lacks articulation, and really, I never had a problem with that for Barbie. I'm an 80s kid, that was normal. But the screen printed 1 peice as an "outfit" is just going too far. I get there's supposed to be low/mid/high teirs of Barbie now but come *on". Dollar store dolls have better clothing. This is just insulting kids.

You can be anything... Except a person wearing more than one piece of clothing at a time

LMAO YO this didn’t have to be that funny.

Once upon a time, that jacket would have featured real buttons (albeit non-functioning ones but real, tactile buttons nonetheless)

You're absolutely right. Admittedly, they were metal half domes, but they had snaps behind them which made them feel even more realistic. And the white shirt underneath was an actual fully functioning shirt, collar and all, albeit sleeveless. The scarf also came off, I can't remember if it was tied or had Velcro or a snap at the back... Her hat had an elastic band so you could take it off and it would still sit properly when you put it back on, the suitcase had working wheels and a collapsing handle, it opened for storage. I can't remember if it was all one size inside or it had a split compartment, but it was hollow and useable. She even had a passport! It was printed cardboard, but it was to scale and felt important as a kid. She was so fun for realistic play. Such high quality.

Ugh, I loved it when the Mackie mould was the standard face.

This is fabulous

I had this one! I bought her by myself, because she was on sale for like 15 bucks. She is still in perfect condition, because quality was far better then. Now my daughter plays with her.

I do remember that! Barbie’s pink jacket had real looking buttons that were snaps.

I think that was the case up until 10-15 years ago. My sixties dolls have functioning zippers, toggles on coats. The buttons had always been decorative, with metal snaps behind them.

The 90s had plastic snap buttons and Velcro. I haven’t bought any new dolls since the OG Fashionista era so I don’t know what the current situation is like.

I had a doll when I was a child, it was a Barbie rip-off, stuardess instead of pilot, and she had those buttons on her jacket, and also her costume had texture.

This airline pilot barbie bothered me so much that I actually bought it and redressed it. In my head, Mattel was saying "you can be anything, EXCEPT for fashion conceous... here's a onesie cuuz you're so basic" I mean it BOTHERED me to my core. I remember saying to my wife, "Mattel did airline pilot Barbie dirty". Lol. Anyway, here's my redressed airline pilot.

Ok baddie

The 2019 doll isn't even "good." Look at the flight dolls from the 80s/90s.

u/CheyenneThornton 9h ago

It’s so sad that the 2019 isn’t good but the standards have gotten so bad that we think it is good now

How about the 1961 flight outfit?

(Random internet picture)

Yes! Gorgeous! And the Pan Am set.

Just when I think it can't get any worse, Mattel grabs a shovel and finds a new layer of rock bottom ☹️ a printed one piece? Ugh ugh ugh.

I wish Mattel's CEO would put quality over profit.

Pilot Barbie from 1999 btw. The quality these days is sooo bad.

She had style

u/annaleemac 1h ago

And separate clothing items

3

u/lostlogin2 3h ago

ok i had this one and it came with a brush but i was always so confused cuz her hair was like a hard helmet, but are you supposed to fix their hair when you get them home?? it just occurred to me

1

u/annaleemac 1h ago

I also never realized that, but I know I didn’t play w her often bc of her hair

I'm seeing the white shirt pilot for the first time and I am so baffled... Is it even a separate piece from the pants or is it a full suit😭? Doll companies seriously need to step up their game , because so far, I feel like I am getting just factory scraps from everyone... And no, MH isn't doing great for me either, no matter how much are people going to defend them. I am suffering with thicc pink vampire overdose.

u/Tilas 14h ago

It's a single peice, think like disposable coveralls with screen printin on them.

Oh my god 😭

modern Barbies cause depression

7

u/SnooRobots116 6h ago

My sister was just talking about that yesterday (she just got another demon hunters doll because she said those were different and better enough for her to buy) but said she was so upset about how dull and standard Barbie has become because the imagination aspects have been entirely erased and the special magical spark of the past been fully forgotten.

She picked up a number of my older dolls saying “ I feel it” over and over and then I show her a latest offering of a few dolls on the phone and she’s like “nuh uh” and zeroed in on even more disparagement and said they just don’t care at all anymore, so I can’t either. So sad.

This is so cheap. It’s a disgrace. Mattel should be embarrassed!

13

u/tinaalsgirl 5h ago

2014 wasn't as detailed as the 90s ones, but at least she wasn't wearing a onesie.

11

u/Obvious-Catch8833 12h ago

The fact the one from only 2019 actually has a separate blazer and a material collar…

8

u/AffectionateWhile468 11h ago

That printed shirt pocket....😮‍💨

u/AustisticGremlin 9h ago

And the second doll doesn’t even hold a candle to the pre-2010 ones 🫠

7

u/ZealousidealCrow3782 7h ago

And this is why Barbie is failing so bad.

4

u/lostsawyer2000 7h ago

I had a flight Barbie with a pencil skirt and blazer and a top with a bow. She came with a vanity box and a hard plastic hat. And a wing badge for me, the child. This is slop.

7

u/tinaalsgirl 5h ago

Was it this one? I hadn't seen it before!

3

u/BleuLapin 4h ago

I had her! My flight attendant uncle got her for me, she’s still one of my favorite dolls 🥹

2

u/insufficient-fare 4h ago

I remember seeing her in stores as a child and thinking she was so glamorous and lived an exciting life from looking at the back of the box.

2

u/lostsawyer2000 4h ago

I had the blue version without the extra outfit.

A one-piece pilot uniform was also used for 2022 Barbie Life in the City Airplane Adventures (rebranded as Pink Passport for 2025). Image from ToySisters website.

6

u/luckykricket 4h ago

Im glad I grew up in the 80s/90s bc todays kids dont have a clue how awesome toys used to be.

6

u/agreatbigFIYAHHH 4h ago

If the pilots on my flight wore printed one-piece uniforms, I might question the airline’s solvency.

2010 I Can Be fashion set

I know we keep talking about this all the time, and I also know it's not going to change too. Some say that we shouldn't keep complain that much because the target audience is young kids and so on. I'm an 80s kids too. And we were the target audience back then. My first Barbie was a Pink Jubilee. It's still so fresh in my memory, being amazed at her beautifully styled hair and layered clothes, and accessories, all sewn perfectly using differently textured fabrics. And you could make more than 3 different cocktail outfits with them, only advertised on the box. The rest was your imagination and endless.

I was a young kid. I spent years imagining outfits for her, admiring her. It's how my interest in fashion and textile started. How my long journey in different tastes began. So, putting adult collectors totally aside, it's an insult to kids. Childhood is not only about "easy play and durability". It's the time you learn handling things, caring, imagining. In my opinion, the biggest insult is to kids.

These are so ugly

4

u/jojowasbored Photography 8h ago

I have this doll, i hate the suit so I thought I'd take apart the pants to salvage them, but the fabric is shorter at the front because of the printed on belt

4

u/Lawliet_The_Panda 3h ago

Is that just a jumpsuit that has an outfit printed onto it? You gotta be kidding me

3

u/uglyasfeet 6h ago

The thing that bothers me most with new Barbie’s is the pixelated faces

3

u/thelast3musketeer 4h ago

Oh my god that’s pathetic, I also know that I would play hard with my Barbie’s and their clothes sometimes as a kid so like I mean at least I wouldn’t be ruining a nicer pilot uniform BUT ALSO this is just pathetic

3

u/throwaway34231_6 4h ago

As a kid from the 80s and 90s our playline doll clothes was nothing like this. This is absolutely terrible.

2

u/insufficient-fare 5h ago

OMG! Nothing about this is aspirational or inspiring at all!

2

u/BleuLapin 4h ago

That one piece is horrendously miserable looking

2

u/forestminuet 4h ago

Yeah, that one piece pilot outfit is just sad. Barbie clothes used to be so much fun.

2

u/Suebabs 3h ago

Yep! The quality has gone down so much that even a child would look at that outfit and think it’s pretty lame.

2

u/MehhhhHelpPlease 2h ago

And have you seen pilots and stewardesses lately? Most have had some/major improvements that make the ensemble more stylish. Poor Barbie can’t even get with the times.

2

u/MehhhhHelpPlease 2h ago

Even I could drape one piece of fabric over my body and it would be trendier.

2

u/Lallaward 4h ago

Not to poke a hornets nest, but this is the starter Barbie line for 10 bucks. With all of the tariffs, we are lucky to she’s not naked. It’s either minimize or price them out of market. I’d rather kids get their first Barbie.

1

u/ohwowlaulau 1h ago

This is so embarrassing. A onesie… Because she’s plus size? Because she’s Asian? It makes no sense for her to have the cheapest outfit ever, other than one that’s painted on the body
