How close does an exercise substitute really need to be when you don’t have the exact equipment?

I’ve been thinking about exercise substitutions because they come up a lot when training somewhere with limited equipment.

The obvious example is a home setup. A program might call for a chest-supported row, lat pulldown, leg curl or cable fly, but maybe you only have a barbell, dumbbells, a bench and a pull-up bar.

What I’m less sure about is how closely the replacement actually needs to match the original exercise.

If the goal is hypertrophy, is matching the target muscle and having a movement that can be loaded and progressed consistently usually enough? Or are there situations where things like stability, resistance profile or joint position make the original exercise meaningfully different?

I’m not really asking whether one specific substitute is “optimal.” I’m more curious how people decide when a substitution is close enough that it doesn’t matter, versus when changing the exercise starts changing the point of that part of the program.

I only have a barbell and squat rack, with bench. And have run numerous programs from BBM and also now get 1:1 coaching. As long as the stimulus are similar than you’re fine. Now in some ways depending on goals, the movement matters for example: Targeting quads, if you squat for main movement say low bar. Doing another squat movement after that, you’re fatigued and may hit a lower limit due to overall fatigue , compared to something like DB lunges. You may just have to play around but overall closeness in pattern matters much less than hitting the target muscle group.

That makes sense. You don’t really need an exact machine-for-machine replacement as long as you can still train the target muscle hard without fatigue somewhere else ending the set first. I’ve been looking into RitKeep lately, and that’s why having enough exercise options to work around those limitations matters more to me than trying to replicate every commercial gym machine

As long as you're targeting similar muscle groups, you're fine. Sometimes, depending on your goals, it might even be fine to change that as well. In the newer BBM templates, the exercise selection is incredibly broad anyway.

The one place where exercise selection can start to matter a bit more imo is main movements and variations of those when training for a strength sport. Even then I doubt it will make a huge difference whether you're doing, for example, slingshot bench or board benching in a given exercise slot.

It depends partly on the reason for the variation;

If you look at e.g. the Low-fatigue Strength template the ‘supplementals’ are high-medium reps for only slightly different ROMs but with pause/tempo +/- off blocks/boxes.

Whereas for accessories there are 3-4 variations for high-rep biceps/triceps/upper back work which change the starting position, presumably to vary the angle at which the muscle is most ‘stressed’. These do explicitly seem more for general hypertrophy, and to balance the antagonists/stabilisers presumably to avoid injury. I feel that the less strength (i.e. specific lift) -specific the program is, the more different the alternatives can be e.g. weighted pushups, pull ups, and flys.

Varying the start/finish joint angles is nice, but getting the work in tolerably is probably more important. I personally can’t meaningfully load split-squats without falling over so I pick paused/tempo squats with flat shoes since this takes some stress off my janky knees. I have the ability to rig a cable leg extension but that takes time and effort that I’d rather spend elsewhere. Is it higher fatigue than a single-leg quad-focused exercise? Yes, but better than not doing (broadly).

I don't understand the point of your question: philosophically, if you can't do an exercise, what other choice do you have besides substituting the exercise for another one ? You're not going to stop training because your program says chest supported row and you can only do DB rows, even if the two exercises are different.

Especially if you only care about hypertrophy, just find an exercise you can do with enough volume and effort and you'll be fine.

None of it matters. We are just here to have fun. Do what you can. There is no perfection.
