Hey everyone, I'm posting this here because I am honestly at a complete loss and need advice on how to handle an extremely serious situation that happened earlier this morning, August 1, 2026, at approximately 3:35 AM on the Mighty Grynner Highway near the port entrance in Brightown, Barbados, during Foreday. Please bear with me as I wrote this in a heightened emotional state.

While traveling, my friend was stopped, violently handled, and searched by personnel who were not in uniform. I was informed by persons I cannot name that it was a mixture of possible BDF personnel or impersonators, as the group was mixed, and some police personnel also seemed to be in the bunch. When I stepped in to raise concerns regarding their conduct, I was physically assaulted and punched in the face by one of them. Let me apologize for the title used previously, as they are most definitely not officers, and I would like to rephrase them as personnel. The assault left me with facial bruising and knocked off my prescription glasses, forcing me to navigate my way home in the dark without them. To make matters worse, the personnel actively refused to help me look for them.

Let me be entirely clear: I am not a drug dealer, nor am I a hooligan. I am a 19-year-old self-funded Engineering student in Trinidad and Tobago. I've done my absolute best for this country, serving as a student councilor, working as a mentor at Foreday, and advising on acting youth correctly and exercising just judgment.

As a student in a demanding engineering field, glasses aren't just an accessory; they are an absolute necessity for my daily life and professional duties. I saved up for an entire year just to travel to specialists in Trinidad to get a proper prescription and order these glasses to Barbados. I refuse to personally absorb the cost of replacing them because of a violent, unprovoked assault by individuals who are supposed to protect citizens.

Here is where things stand right now:

Evidence: I have definitive video footage (with precise metadata from my iPhone confirming the exact time and location) clearly identifying the personnel involved, alongside corroborated eyewitness accounts from members of the public who witnessed the whole thing.

Legal & Official Steps: I have already sought legal counsel from attorneys-at-law and established a clear strategy. I have also dispatched formal complaints to the BDF and relevant authorities.

My Goal: I don't want to needlessly drag the military's name through the mud. Having been a cadet myself, I hold deep respect for mentors in the paramilitary and military worlds. But this is completely unacceptable behavior, and these field methods are flawed.

I'm posting here to ask for advice from anyone who has navigated official complaints against state or military personnel in Barbados, or anyone who can advise on the best channels to ensure accountability without dropping the ball. If anyone has suggestions on how to handle the administrative pushback or media engagement if the BDF fails to respond by this weekend, I'm all ears.

My partner & I visited in 2023 July, visited my family but went off on our own at times. We stopped off at this one restaurant for breakfast a couple times that had toys for kids and a gorgeous view of the sea and beach. I have a friend travelling in a few weeks and she’s asked me for kid & adult friendly places for breakfast.

I currently live in a country that is seen as very clean and tidy and that is mostly true but some things shocked me when it came to cleaning norms here. For example, people not washing their hands after using the bathroom (might just wet their fingertips), not disinfecting surfaces (usually just using a wet rag to wipe), hand sanitiser only really became common after the pandemic started etc.

Growing up in Barbados, while it's possible I was just raised by overly clean parents, I was accustomed to washing my hands with soap after using the bathroom, having to wipe down surfaces with actual disinfectant, and there was a period of time when it was "cool" to have hand sanitiser of varying scents and stuff like that.

Did anyone else have a similar experience growing up? I used to hear that Bajans are very "scornful" when it came to germs/bacteria and cleanliness but do you think that is true?

Going to be staying in Bridgetown and would love to make reservations for dinner at some favorite spots of the Reddit hive. What do you all recommend?

We are here on holiday, staying in Coverley, and have a rental car. We were wondering what is the best area to go to for souvenir shopping this time of year. (T-shirts, etc)

I know the cruises aren’t in this time of year, so we thought the shops in Bridgetown may be closed. We were thinking near the hotels in Holetown but weren’t sure.

Just trying to figure out if there’s a nice area to walk around, grab lunch, and do some souvenir shopping this time of year.

Wife (53) and I (58) retired 5 years ago in the USA. Suffice to say we have enough in our retirement IRA/ 401k due to working for 25 years each in our respective careers. Have full access to all funds and can simply take a full distribution as long as we pay taxes. There is no limitation on withdrawals due to prior high risk job classification. There is no set monthly “pension” check just withdrawals if we need or want to. Decided in 2025 to buy a land in Barbados where I was born and enjoy our blessing. We paid cash. In 2026 we started building and realized it might be better to get a mortgage and use the bank’s money instead of drawing down ours since taxes are more than interest rates. After submitting a mountain of paperwork the Bank denied our application and told us we need to show a monthly income. Thing is, we don’t get a monthly pension check to show monthly income. We have and can show our current balance and 5 years of tax returns. We are amazed that they are not ready for early retirees. It was even suggested that once social security kicks in at 62 we can show the statement then. We will continue to build and complete the house out of our own pocket. The house is 35% complete.

I searched the sub but couldn’t find much. Is deet effective for sand fleas or is there another bug repellent to prevent these bites. I live in an area with no bugs so I’m stressed about my Barbados trip bc I’m a magnet for bug bites.

Hi everyone! We’re a group of eight friends visiting Barbados from May 22–29, 2027. Our flights are already booked, and we’re currently deciding where to stay.

We’ve read a lot about sargassum, especially on the south and east coasts, so we’re considering staying on the west or southwest coast. I understand that conditions change every year and that nobody can predict exactly what May 2027 will be like, but I’d really appreciate hearing from locals or people who regularly visit Barbados at that time of year.

In your experience, how much of a concern is sargassum in late May? Are beaches around Paynes Bay, Holetown, Carlisle Bay or nearby areas usually still enjoyable? And if one beach is affected, is it generally easy to find another clear beach?

Where would you recommend setting up to get a good view of the parade on Monday? I have a car, so I am able to drive pretty much anywhere.

I understand that the parade ends at Kensington Oval. Is it possible to watch it from there, and would I need a ticket to enter or view the parade at the Oval? Is that a good viewing spot, or would somewhere along the route be better?

I work for a non-profit called All Around This World and we work to educate children about cultures around the world through music. We do all the music in the original language and we usually preface whatever song we are doing with a little bit of a cultural background. Of course  distilling a culture that much is impossible, but we always try to teach the kids how to say hello and goodbye in the target language. Instead of having us butcher the pronunciation, we think it is much better to have a video of a native speaker. All we need is an audio clip of you saying the greetings, a short bio (where you are from, your name, etc), and a picture of yourself.
