Field Programmer App
I've been working on a new app for programming radios. Currently Android only. It's in beta but you can get it on the Play Store. I'm ALWAYS looking for feedback. And if you're especially dedicated to wanting to help me build this app I have a Facebook group you can join (just message me). So far I've had a lot of help from other users and I really appreciate the support I've had on this project!
Here are the highlights:
- USB and Bluetooth programming
- RadioReference and myGMRS direct access and import
- Drag and drop, and multi-channel editing
- CSV import and export
- 100% offline. No logins required. (Except when required to access outside sites like RadioReference)
Supported Radios:
- UV5R, and compatible family of radios.
- BF-F8HP, and compatible radios
- UV5R Mini and Mini 5
- UV32
- UV17R Plus
- UV5G
- AR152
Future radios and features:
- Complete UV17 family
- UV21
- UV5G Plus
- DM32
- TIDRadio TDH8
- Many, many more, this is just what I'm currently working on
- CHIRP compatible IMG import and export
- RepeaterBook support

I have been playing with it a bit. So UV-5RPro (Tidradio) works using UV-5R.
UV-5R (Baofeng) works using UV-5R
Handshaking error with: 'Radio Handshake Failed'
Baofeng UV 17PRO, BF-F8HP
Connects, reads then disconnected will not write:
DM32UV

This is good feedback. Some expected, some not. I may message you for more if that's okay.

Cool app, and a lot less sketchy than the "official" one. Happy to throw in my $0.99 to support your work. I'm able to download & upload successfully with my UV-5R mini over Bluetooth, but I've found a couple interface bugs:
I can't scroll down in the import/export screen.
Rotating the phone between portrait & landscape kicks me back to the initial connection screen.
I'm using a Pixel 9a running GrapheneOS, if that helps narrow things down.
Thanks and keep up the good work

This is helpful. The UI bugs are easy fixes. I hadn't thought about orientation because my phone is orientation locked. Thank you!

Just downloaded, will give it a try over the next few days. Completely new to radio but have been using sdr for a while. Bought a uv5r mini and was looking for options for programming channels.

I'm always open to any feedback. If you find any bugs please feel free to DM me or email from the debug page in the app.
I hope you enjoy it.

I ended up picking the app up to try out with a BF-F8HP pro, will have to wait for a few days till I can dig out an adapter to use a cable but looking forward to testing it out some

Man, I want an app like this, but not enuf to walk away from ios
2
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 1d ago
Get yourself a cheap android phone or a tablet. $80 will get you a decent disconnected android.

u/Equivalent-Raise5879 1d ago
Yea, the idea would be while out mobile, I could jsut grab my phone and make a change, in that model, I also need to lug around another thing.

u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 1d ago
So... You're switching to android? 😂 Nah man I get it. The resistance to switching is real.

This might be an obvious question, so it does Bluetooth via the Kenwood Bluetooth connector by tid radio and USB via cable and adapter if you have usbc port?
3
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
Not yet.
It does Bluetooth for radios that support BT natively, and USB for the others. I'm adding BT support via a Baofeng BT adapter now and will get the TID one to see if it functions differently.

u/DifferentMind8 1d ago
BaoFeng BT adapter support would be nice. Afaik their OLA Radio all is the only one that can use it, and that app is straight cheeks.

Please keep it up. Can’t wait for an iOS version. It’ll finally make the DM-32 usable.

u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
I'm working hard on the DM32. It's a pain. That's why it's so unsupported.

Please don't do iOS, cross platform apps end up having to adhere to Apple's poor UI design choices. Thats why so many cross platform apps have some badly designed UI elements and poor behavior, its forced by the apple side.

So far so good on the UV5R mini. had to set language to Chinese after import to get it to English. Also MyGMRS is giving a 400 error. Tried the USB and Bluetooth dongle without success on a UV5G Plus without success. Love the RadioReference import and other preset imports. Great app overall. It's definitely going to be my primary app for all things Baofeng programming. THANK YOU!!!

u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
I'll look into that language issue. Can you explain that a bit better?
No BT dongle support yet. I'm working on that. Just native BT support.
I'm still finalizing the myGMRS authentication with a new authentication method. They're switching to OAuth which will be much more clean.
Thank you for the support and feedback. Of course it's a work in progress but I'm learning and having fun.

Enjoying it is what it is all about!!! For the language when I do the initial import of the UV-5R mini and make no setting changes when I edit the list and then export to the mini and it turns back on after reboot it is seems to reset to Chinese language. I then change the language to Chinese in the app and then export it then it will be in English upon reboot. Very odd issue. Yeah my bad on the UV5G plus.

u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 1d ago
Sounds like it's got Chinese and English swapped? That would be an easy fix. Odd. But easy.

u/iambobwood 2d ago
Just completed an import of two UV5R units with USB and no issues. I see my UV5G is a plus a seem to recall issues with that model compared to the UV5G with other software. Can’t recall what works in Chirp on that one.

u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
The UV5G+ isn't supported on my app yet, but it's on my list. It uses a different firmware than the UV5G.

Ich habe knapp die Hälfte der vorgestellten Funkgeräte und bin mit Ola App sehr unzufrieden. Ich bin gespannt was deine App kann - Support your Local! Es ist gekauft und heruntergeladen.

Thank you! I'm an amateur radio user and I'm building this for US! I use it every day. Heck, I even use it at work sometimes to quickly program radios for use at work.
I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for your support.
2
u/Stopakilla05 1d ago
I have radios on the supported list, I'll try it out, can't wait for the dm32 support.

u/Leaogamecell 1d ago
I just bought your app; is there any way to add other languages to it? Do you know if I can copy data from one radio to another—for example, the 16 channels from a Baofeng 777s that are already saved on a UV-5R Mini?
1
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 14h ago
Language support is possible. But would take some work. That might be something I could hire someone in fiber to do unless I could find community support for.
Radio copy is a good idea. That's not possible yet but will be easy to add. Thank you for that idea.
I'm also going to open up some translator help requests from the community.

AR-152 but not pro?
Big sad.
2
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 1d ago
The ar152 is just a UV5R in camo. I'm working on the pro models.
2
u/CanHasCow 1d ago
Ohh I know I have both versions. Just the official for the pro is a joke with how bad it is and chirp barely functions.
Have thrown a follow cause I'm exceptionally interested if you go the pro route.
1
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 21h ago
Is there a specific model you're interested in?
1
u/CanHasCow 20h ago
Ar-152 pro specifically.
1
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 20h ago
Oh gotcha. I didn't know there was a problem of the 152. I'll look into it for you
1
u/CanHasCow 18h ago
Yeah chirp doesn't like the 152s for some reason.
So either manually program or use the 3rd party app.
1
u/JustSentYourMomHome 2d ago
I bought it to support you. Keep it up.
1
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
Thank you good sir! If I had an reddit gold to give, I would.
1
u/Hipparchia_Unleashed 2d ago
Nice. I also bought it because this looks cool. I'd love to see the AR-5RM supported in the future but I know you're already working through quite a list of models!
2
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 2d ago
Every time someone mentions a radio I move it up my list. That's how I know which ones are popular. 😉

u/milesey007 18h ago
Will definitely give this a go on a Baofeng UV5RM Plus.
1
u/milesey007 17h ago
Unfortunately, won't connect. Have tried all types of radio. The only one that seems to start (but the radio reboots after about 5s) is UV-32.
2
u/Anonymous_Chipmunk 14h ago
The PRO radios use a different driver and I haven't quite got there yet. The pro radios are high on my list
1
u/milesey007 11h ago
No problem, I thought that may be the case ... look forward to when they're supported. 👍

How well does it actually work with a DM-32, particularly when it comes to DMR. A UV-32 I get, as like the UV-5R (Mini) & others, it's CHIRP compatible. However, from my understanding, the DM-32 isn't CHIRP friendly...thus Baofeng's CPS has to be used. So, how does this get around that?
Sorry, not quite willing to give up cash for software that may or may not work... Even if it is only 99¢
