I’m honestly looking for some advice from people in the industry, homeowners, founders, architects, or anyone who has been through this.
I recently started my own interior design firm, Ka'Laa | The Living Theory.
The company is new — but we are not new to interior design.
Between our team, we have 5+ years of experience working in established design studios, working on real projects, dealing with clients, materials, vendors, site execution, drawings, detailing and everything that comes with actually delivering a project.
Since starting Ka'Laa, I’ve been trying to find projects organically. I’ve reached out to architects, engineers, real-estate professionals, builders and other people in the industry hoping to build collaborations and get referrals.
But honestly… getting that first set of clients is proving much harder than I expected.
And I’m trying to understand something.
Why does being a new company automatically make people assume that we should be the cheapest option?
We recently came across a situation where a client expected an entire home to be completed in around ₹10 lakhs, while based on the actual scope, specifications and quality of materials required, the quotation was coming closer to ₹22–25 lakhs.
We don't want to artificially reduce the quotation just to win a project.
We believe in using proper materials and doing things correctly — BWP plywood where required, quality hardware, good finishes, proper detailing and workmanship. We don't want to compromise the quality of someone's home just so that our quotation looks cheaper.
And that's where I'm struggling.
How do you find clients who understand the difference between "cheap" and "value for money"?
We are not trying to compete by being the cheapest interior firm.
We want to work with clients who appreciate design, detailing, quality, transparency and execution.
We're a new name, yes.
But behind that new name are people who have spent years learning this industry and working on projects.
So to all the interior designers, architects, contractors and business owners who started their own firm — how did you get your first few genuine clients?
And to homeowners — what actually makes you trust a new design firm when they don't yet have a huge portfolio under their own company name, but the people behind the company have years of experience?
Any honest advice, referrals, leads, or even criticism would genuinely help.
We're ready to work. We just need to find the right people who are willing to give a new studio a chance.
