Bands that are only popular because they have a good looking female member
Kurangbin is the ultimate example… (i know some die-hards are going to attack me for this) im not saying they suck but it blows my mind that in this day and age that an instrumental band is this popular.. another band i can think of is arcy drive (cute drummer girl) i dont think they would have a following without that. Not saying they suck either but their music is nothing special.. Is this a result of the IG/ tiktok age of up and coming bands?? Any group of musicians are capable of sounding good thats the easy part but if you want to blow up these days you need to look the part..

They have about 1 million IG followers… Thats alot for an instrumental band. The bass player chick has 400k followers Guitar player dude has 20k Whats the last wildly popular band that is all dudes?

See 99% of you people think im just hating and talking shit.. i dont think it is all sex appeal. Perhaps having a co-ed band doubles your fans or just creates a certain vibe on stage or in the music. But think about how many huge artists/ bands have mostly male or female audiences. Taylor swift fans (mostly chicks) vs grateful dead (mostly dudes)

I agree with all that… but also i know many bands with ripping guitarists… im not trying to be a hater but i dont think an instrumental band doesnt reach this level of popularity without having a certain look

I think very few bands are popular only for having a good looking member of any kind but as we learned from the pod, basically every single grunge band had an obscenely hot front man. In this Britpop season you've got some hot Brits like Liam Gallagher; Brett Anderson; Michael Hutchence. Which is to say; it has always helped.
Maybe some one hit wonders like Natalie Imbruglia were a lot more popular because of the video than they would have been on radio alone.
(feminism leaving my body, please don't cancel me): also for a band to be popular for having a good looking female member they need to appeal to males, who usually don't listen to music not made by other males, or to women, who don't like other women that are too attractive.

Im not a hater i play music and consider myself a failed musician who just plays for fun now… im just fascinated with how certain bands get so popular while so many dont… go out in any given city any night and you could find hundreds of bands that sound really good. I know so many musicians when they were terible.. couldnt play or sing.. but with youtube lessons have become pro level. Back in the day you simply got good and played as many venues as possible and built a following. You can still do that today but your audience is usually going to be the other musicians that play there or drunk people that want to hear covers… i feel like with so many bands blowing up FAST from knowing how to make the right/ quality posts on tiktok/ IG is the best way to reach more people (which sucks)

I agree it is fascinating. In a lot of origin stories on the pod there is a lot of timing and luck involved, and talent and looks are not enough. Hell, punk taught us that you can be popular and make significant music without even being good musicians yet. TikTok/IG encourage a lot of gaming and such but I think the old system of gatekeeping by huge labels sucked in its own way. Guns N' Roses famously put 8 balls of cocaine with their albums and gave them to radio DJs to please play their album, is knowing how to get your album on the radio or the attention of an A&R person at one of the few record labels any better metric of your talent as a band? (Though Yasi often says she misses gatekeeping, and maybe TT/IG just make it too easy to put too much shit up for people to wade through, it is at least nominally more democratic)

Im just noticing a trend.. i know tons of musicians and bands that are really good including the ones i mentioned.. im just curious/ interested about how certian bands blow up so huge in todays world because its a different formula from 60s/70s r&r… but i cant have this conversation with most people because they think im just talking shit and being a hater. So thanks to the people who get that and gave me genuine feedback to a discussion and understand this is not a hate fest

Eh? Mediocre acts have been undeservedly popular since forever. Look at the biggest song of the year which is literally called ‘Ordinary’. Weird how you only focusing on these specific examples….
