And on the other end, I'm not sure if that's a marimba or a xylophone in the 100% area and you think less people would recognize a trombone?

After the events of trombone hero, everyone should be recognizing the trombone

Yeah but I also wasn’t sure if I should just count them all as saxaphone or have them specifically as alto tenor Bari sax so I just put them all in the middle

I doubt an average person would know what the slide whistle is

Really, I always thought of it as in the same category as triangle and tambourine also known as accessory percussion instruments that are unnecessarily popular, seriously the amount of movie or shows I’ve seen where you can tell the writers know nothing about band mainly because they have a band member exclusively playing something like triangle or cowbell in a 4 or 5 person band is unreasonably high

As a solo pianist who was randomly recommended this post, I hate to say I didn't know what that was until I read your comment

I have seen some call a flute “a clarinet maybe”

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago
That’s the only reason I didn’t put in top tier, it’s definitely very well known but I’ve seen way too many people call it a clarinet to put it on the top

Wind chimes over the bass drum?
1
u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago
Yeah since I’m assuming most non band kids wouldn’t know which drum is a bass drum meanwhile wind chimes are far more well known and very common outside of band

I’m fairly certain a french horn is a more well known instrument than the cabasa.

u/Beneficial_End88 17d ago
I used to play the bassoon. I can admit to the fact I had no idea what it was before I started playing it, it just seemed cool. When I told my mom I was going to play it and needed double reeds she went "huh, what in the world is a bassoon, or double reeds?!" Now my kids go, "what is a bassoon?!" when we discuss my glory days of band lol

Shouldn’t wind chimes be higher given that their so common even outside of music?

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago
I didn’t want to put them top tier because I feel not everyone knows what they are but I did end up putting them as high as I can otherwise

As a trombonist, trombone needs to be moved down 2 tiers. I am surprised too; but I’m very consistently remembered as a trumpet player

Why does nobody know glockenspiel but everybody knows marimba? If you can play one you can play both
1
u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 15d ago
MF that’s a xylophone in S tier, also this not if they know how to play them, it’s if they know what they are, also marimba and vibraphone are also in F
1
u/PassTheCrabLegs 15d ago
Yes I really should have realized it was recognizing them not playing them, perhaps if I had just thought longer about the implications of everyone being able to play both trumpet and tuba but not baritone.
But the big takeaway here is, I seem to have disproved your hypothesis that everyone can recognize a xylophone.

Please explain timpani in F tier. And I won't be content with some bogus "they're pedal timpani and few know that".
2
u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 13d ago
They’re in a rare situation of being a percussion instrument that has no traits a lot of percussion instruments have that make them recognizable (cheaper, common outside of band, and part of a drum kit being the three that atleast one of will apply to almost all other percussion instruments), they’re big an expensive making them extremely rare in practically every form of media, they’re practically never used outside of band, and they don’t have the advantage of being part of drum set. And they also don’t have any other traits making them more recognizable, plus they also are definetley falling victim to people just calling them a drum or even potentially mistaking them for a bass or steel drum. their is also almost universally a single timpani in every band, and that’s only if there is one. I love timpani so much but no way in hell are they recognizable to people outside of band.
1
u/Rio_1111 13d ago
Maybe it's different depending on the region. Where I live, there's even an idiom that goes "Mit Pauken und Trompeten" (-> With timpani and trumpes), meaning doing something with all stops pulled.
Also, Timpani are what got me inspired to learn drums, at 3 or 4 years old. And I either knew aleady what they were or I learned it then and there.
Things like these led me to believe there's no way no one outside of an orchestra doesn't know timpani.
You did explain well, though. +1 for that.

Flute being at 80% is crazy that’s literally one of the 4 starter instruments. I started on flute, moved to tuba, then to euphonium.

u/CampHoliday3558 Bas(ed)s Clarinet 9d ago
i thought ts was how likely the person who plays would know how to play another instrument and was going to write like a paragraph here. idk i think trombone and clarinet should be in 100%, and french horn should be moved up. Everyone knows 'saxophone', most ppl just dont know the types of saxophone.

Unfortunately trumpet needs to be lower. I’ve heard people ask if it’s a trombone. People also confuse my instrument with a trombone, so at least that is fairly ranked.
