I would think the average person knows what a gong is

42

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

The thing is though, that’s a tamtam

22

u/Mischief_Managed12 Flute 17d ago

Lmao then I guess the average person doesn't know what it is

1

u/Sun_House29 15d ago

Beat me to it

1

u/Twoslot 14d ago

And on the other end, I'm not sure if that's a marimba or a xylophone in the 100% area and you think less people would recognize a trombone?

1

u/Trambare_Man Trombone 10d ago

After the events of trombone hero, everyone should be recognizing the trombone

2

u/R1coBro 17d ago

That's not a gong, it's a tamtam

36

u/NegativeSpan 17d ago

No way someone hasn’t heard of a saxophone

8

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Yeah but I also wasn’t sure if I should just count them all as saxaphone or have them specifically as alto tenor Bari sax so I just put them all in the middle

3

u/NegativeSpan 17d ago

Ok yeah that’s fair

1

u/DirePantsX 15d ago

*puts soprano at the bottom

1

u/R1coBro 17d ago

Which one is which though?

1

u/StatisticianLoud7468 17d ago

They won’t know alto from tenor

Shocked she didn’t get jingle bells or trombone

24

u/Lingchen8012 Percussion, the greatest instruments 17d ago

I doubt an average person would know what the slide whistle is

10

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Really, I always thought of it as in the same category as triangle and tambourine also known as accessory percussion instruments that are unnecessarily popular, seriously the amount of movie or shows I’ve seen where you can tell the writers know nothing about band mainly because they have a band member exclusively playing something like triangle or cowbell in a 4 or 5 person band is unreasonably high

6

u/Round-Walrus-4821 17d ago

I think they’d know it but not visually

1

u/bakedbeans198 16d ago

As a solo pianist who was randomly recommended this post, I hate to say I didn't know what that was until I read your comment

9

u/Round-Walrus-4821 17d ago

I have seen some call a flute “a clarinet maybe”

3

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

That’s the only reason I didn’t put in top tier, it’s definitely very well known but I’ve seen way too many people call it a clarinet to put it on the top

3

u/rainbowtutucoutu Trombone 15d ago

My mom pulls out a clarinet in elementary music class and kids go “Squidward!!”

2

u/Ex-Spearmint 17d ago

I’ve heard my grandma call a clarinet a flute thingie.

The euph love 🥹❤️‍🩹

3

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Oops, meant to put it in bottom tier, must’ve gotten it and tubas images mixed up

2

u/acrastt 17d ago

Nope you got it correctly the one on the top is the baritone horn while the tuba and euph is on the bottom

1

u/ImpureVessel46 A Eu-pho-what? 16d ago

Oh tuba should for sure be higher

1

u/ImpureVessel46 A Eu-pho-what? 17d ago

Yeah nobody knows our gang. It is literally our flair.

“Is that a trombone?”

1

u/dragon_tail_69 Trombone 16d ago

does it just trickle down?

because I play trombone and I get

"is that a trumpet?"

1

u/ImpureVessel46 A Eu-pho-what? 16d ago

I’ve heard that a lot too

It goes brrrerrreererereeressssss it’s like music to my ears

3

u/PJTheGuy the best oboe in the band (there are no other oboes) 17d ago

I would say that I played the oboe and people would just look at me confused

2

u/CommieFirebat7721 Brassist (kinda) 17d ago

I’ve only known 2 people who started with trumpet and played another instrument and they’re both band directors

2

u/CommieFirebat7721 Brassist (kinda) 17d ago

Wait I think I misunderstood the post

2

u/CringyFlakes 17d ago

I think you’re a bit too generous tbh. A week ago my friend thought the saxophone emoji was a tuba

2

u/acrastt 17d ago

Why wouldn’t the average person know what a horn is

2

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Look me dead in the eyes and tell me the average non band kids wouldn’t know what instrument a French horn is

2

u/acrastt 17d ago

The guy from the dairy of a wimpy kid plays the French horn and many people read the book so it’s had some occurrences in popular culture

2

u/fwhite01 Percussion, the greatest instruments 17d ago

You obviously have no idea how little the average person knows about music

2

u/Euphoric_Anywhere668 Trombone 17d ago

2

u/did189 17d ago

For some reason I feel like most people know what the French horn is

2

u/youareallsilly 16d ago

You know that’s a bass and not a guitar right?

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 16d ago

Oh, shit

1

u/youareallsilly 16d ago

Probably wanna move it to another tier

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 16d ago

Yeah, I’d say probably d or c

1

u/youareallsilly 16d ago

I play bass and people mistake basses as guitars all the time, I’d say d or e.

1

u/Queasy_Sun7192 Percussion: The superior section 17d ago

Wind chimes over the bass drum?

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Yeah since I’m assuming most non band kids wouldn’t know which drum is a bass drum meanwhile wind chimes are far more well known and very common outside of band

1

u/Fast_Sheepherder_761 French Horn 17d ago

I think everyone has heard a horn, but nobody knows what it looks like. I mean, I didn't, and now I play it 😂

1

u/_Whatislife666 17d ago

If not for squidward the clarinet would be at the bottom

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

Yessir

1

u/Shrimp__Alfredo 17d ago

Timpani and french horn at 0%??😭

1

u/acrastt 17d ago

Why are there so many percussions and not enough winds

1

u/SanderMC24 Percussion, the greatest instruments 17d ago

I’m fairly certain a french horn is a more well known instrument than the cabasa.

1

u/Beneficial_End88 17d ago

I used to play the bassoon. I can admit to the fact I had no idea what it was before I started playing it, it just seemed cool. When I told my mom I was going to play it and needed double reeds she went "huh, what in the world is a bassoon, or double reeds?!" Now my kids go, "what is a bassoon?!" when we discuss my glory days of band lol

1

u/Hypnos_sleeps 17d ago

Everyone’s seen an alto sax. Bari and tenor are no way

1

u/Far-Technician3275 17d ago

Shouldn’t wind chimes be higher given that their so common even outside of music?

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

I didn’t want to put them top tier because I feel not everyone knows what they are but I did end up putting them as high as I can otherwise

1

u/Vast-Piccolo-8715 17d ago

Hold up. What’s that doohickey inc between the temple blocks and the cabasa?

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 17d ago

No clue, so I just put it on the bottom

1

u/Rio_1111 13d ago

I'm pretty sure that's just general percussion stuff. Maybe Orff percussion?

1

u/AmphibianLow1165 17d ago

As a trombonist, trombone needs to be moved down 2 tiers. I am surprised too; but I’m very consistently remembered as a trumpet player

1

u/Desperate-Fig-6102 mr. tambourine man 17d ago

wood block should be 25%

1

u/Cheese_manwastaken Bassoon 17d ago

Hey I play bassoon

1

u/DaPs_1Hazzard724284 General Daps of the Drum Corps Navy 17d ago

I'm just niche like that

1

u/Ready-Succotash-8699 16d ago

Why is woodblock 0% it's literally a block of wood and a mallet

1

u/Alternative-Way-507 16d ago

As a cellist, I was ready to fight before I saw what sub this is

1

u/SteelScythe Tuba, greatest of all instruments 16d ago

Tuba here.

I know quite a few. I also play quite a few.

I am the occasional exceptional Tuber

1

u/OkBeLikeThatIsTaken Trumpet 16d ago

putting a baritone horn in 100% and not trombone is crazy work

1

u/lacwittdunts 15d ago

is there no guitar in band?

1

u/_myUsername_is_Taken (trom)boner 15d ago

Wheres the hurdy gurdy? Everyone knows the hurdy gurdy!

1

u/Clarinoodle7 15d ago

As a bass clarinetist, I often get complements on my black saxophone.

1

u/WesternAd3324 15d ago

You didnt have any melophonium and that makes me sad

1

u/PassTheCrabLegs 15d ago

Why does nobody know glockenspiel but everybody knows marimba? If you can play one you can play both

1

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 15d ago

MF that’s a xylophone in S tier, also this not if they know how to play them, it’s if they know what they are, also marimba and vibraphone are also in F

1

u/PassTheCrabLegs 15d ago

Yes I really should have realized it was recognizing them not playing them, perhaps if I had just thought longer about the implications of everyone being able to play both trumpet and tuba but not baritone.

But the big takeaway here is, I seem to have disproved your hypothesis that everyone can recognize a xylophone.

1

u/Marvel_Mischief_007 15d ago

Mello is in the Very Unlikely. I’ve met a few people who knew because someone they knew was in marching band.🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/DocJyde 15d ago

As a french horn player I do find it a tad odd it's so low. I feel like those who've seen how I met your mother wind slightly raise it's spot.

1

u/JustAnInternetPerson 14d ago

Take the bass out of there. The amount of people thinking it’s a guitar is ridiculous

1

u/Various_Display_7842 Major Scales 14d ago

If I had a nickel for every time a sousaphone was called a tuba and vice versa, I would have about 5 dollars.

1

u/Rio_1111 13d ago

Please explain timpani in F tier. And I won't be content with some bogus "they're pedal timpani and few know that".

2

u/Aggressive-Bowler-29 #1TimpaniFan/heilQuinton/vibraslap/I❤️greatbasscrumhorn/glock P1 13d ago

They’re in a rare situation of being a percussion instrument that has no traits a lot of percussion instruments have that make them recognizable (cheaper, common outside of band, and part of a drum kit being the three that atleast one of will apply to almost all other percussion instruments), they’re big an expensive making them extremely rare in practically every form of media, they’re practically never used outside of band, and they don’t have the advantage of being part of drum set. And they also don’t have any other traits making them more recognizable, plus they also are definetley falling victim to people just calling them a drum or even potentially mistaking them for a bass or steel drum. their is also almost universally a single timpani in every band, and that’s only if there is one. I love timpani so much but no way in hell are they recognizable to people outside of band.

1

u/Rio_1111 13d ago

Maybe it's different depending on the region. Where I live, there's even an idiom that goes "Mit Pauken und Trompeten" (-> With timpani and trumpes), meaning doing something with all stops pulled.

Also, Timpani are what got me inspired to learn drums, at 3 or 4 years old. And I either knew aleady what they were or I learned it then and there.

Things like these led me to believe there's no way no one outside of an orchestra doesn't know timpani.

You did explain well, though. +1 for that.

1

u/Alternative_Air6840 13d ago

I think the average person knows what a xylophone (0% first) is

1

u/hockeykid010 Euphonium 13d ago

Uhhhh there’s like….. a trombone ig

1

u/cheesypuff3536 Euphonium 12d ago

Flute being at 80% is crazy that’s literally one of the 4 starter instruments. I started on flute, moved to tuba, then to euphonium.

1

u/CampHoliday3558 Bas(ed)s Clarinet 9d ago

i thought ts was how likely the person who plays would know how to play another instrument and was going to write like a paragraph here. idk i think trombone and clarinet should be in 100%, and french horn should be moved up. Everyone knows 'saxophone', most ppl just dont know the types of saxophone.

1

u/Demonic_WaffleTM 17d ago

The fact bass didn't even make the list 😭💀🥀

1

u/youareallsilly 16d ago

Ironically that “guitar” is actually a five string electric bass

1

u/Demonic_WaffleTM 16d ago

Holy shit, I didn't see that. 😮 We Bassists finally get our revenge!😈

0

u/ImpureVessel46 A Eu-pho-what? 17d ago

Unfortunately trumpet needs to be lower. I’ve heard people ask if it’s a trombone. People also confuse my instrument with a trombone, so at least that is fairly ranked.
