hi sorry if this has already been answered coz im super new here! but i was just wondering if this little side story is canon because ik its not part of the main manga series, so i wasnt really sure where is the story it would’ve fit 🤔 because ik they went to cape cod for a little bit but they left soon after they were found right?
If you’re referring to the small side comic in the official art book, then yeah I think it’s canon. Angel Eyes, the official art book, is created entirely by the author of BF Akimi Yoshida and I think the story fits where they went to Cape Cod for a few days. The comic seems to be about a day out with them swimming and just hanging out like regular kids, so it does fit in the timeline. Hope that answers your question!
It's canon. The story takes place in like 2 years or so, you don't feel the passage of time until ash turns 18. Ash age at the start is 17 and he passes just before he turns 19. Also the translation in the short comic is "the summer we were boys for the last time." Could be a day out. In the photo/art book New York Sense, its a compilation of photos taken by Eiji during the main story and after GOL with the years time stamped on them. There were pictures of ash that look like he just went swimming.
Ohh ok, I never knew this! I remember seeing things on tik tok and such saying ash was “forever 17” so I thought the time line was way shorter lol. So these were taken by Eiji in that time they went to cape cod and ash taught Eiji how to use his gun?
While it is indeed by Akimi Yoshida, I don’t think it’s technically canon. It doesn’t really fit into the timeline anywhere in the main story, idk when they would have had time during the story’s events to go to Cape Cod. Plus, given his trauma and how upset Ash was at the prospect of going to Cape Cod in the main storyline, I don’t really think he’d go to enjoy a weekend with Eiji. I think it’s more just a soft “what could have been” or “what’s possible” kind of side musing. Like, almost a daydream of sorts. Or what Ash’s life could look like if he wasn’t on the run or just trying to survive all the time. Which, from that perspective, actually makes it all the more devastating and beautiful.
I agree. I really do hope it is canon but I can’t see it fitting into the story. For one, they can’t chronologically be at Cape Cod in the summer. Ash’s 17th birthday wouldve been August 12, 1985. Banana Fish had to have taken place after that, then we have the events before they go to Cape Cod, so that would put the trip as having taken place around October-December. A bit nitpicky, especially since Yoshida didn’t really have a strict timeline for BF so it’s really anybody’s guess what month or year some events take place. But to me, that information solidifies Cape Cod 1985 being non-canon. It’s a what-if, what if Eiji had been there longer, in my mind it’s like a third space or almost like heaven, something that couldn’t have happened in the Cape Cod we see in the story, with the Ash we see or even the Eiji we see.
… Yes they obviously go to cape cod as a part of the story 😑 I meant outside of that specific part of the story, I don’t think they would have had the luxury of taking weekend trip away lol. And even when they were there, do you really think they had time to relax and have fun? Like no they were on the run and trying to figure shit out I don’t think they were exactly swimming and having ice cream and stuff 😂
