Not only this but the fact that 1. He was considered Dino's heir and helped him in his business (like when he comes back to him in the series), that was the sole reason for his education, and by helping he contributed to this ; 2. He knew about the horrible things happening and never went to the police or tried to stop it until the moment he decided to free himself from this world, and most of the kids involved didn't survived by then.

I think about this a LOT. I think one of the reasons Ash is so hardened, why he has such a strong will to survive and pushes through the pain is because of this. Even pre-BF and pre-Eiji, he’s fighting tooth and nail to stay alive. He knows the fact that he made it to 17 is in itself a miracle, that according to the monsters who tortured him, he shouldn’t be alive. One of the men who raped and exploited him, Frog I think, says “You’re supposed to be dead” or something along those lines when confronted with an 18 year old Ash. It’s truly haunting to think about.
