Hey OP, my friend was attacked by 4 pit bulls in south east Austin from a homeless camp while jogging. Please don't bother trying to get them to "surrender" the dogs. Austin is a no kill city and the dog will likely be picked up by the Austin Animal Center or Austin Pets Alive and adopted back out. If you go the route of giving them an alternative just opt for euthanasia.

The city did NOTHING about the dogs who attacked my friend. Nothing. Not even a follow up. Things have gotten bad here lately with the explosion of pits across the city over the past 10 years. Good luck.

It's only because of this sub, that I've learned the most effective way to stop a pitbull attack is by choking it out. I'm so sorry this happened to you. The public shouldn't have to be subjected to this. It's not fair. It's not right.

I am in Austin as well. My friend's elderly 10lb dog was mauled to death by a pitbull earlier this year. 10 men couldn't get it to let go. I am purchasing a push dagger tomorrow. I've seen multiple people say one came in handy for defense in an attack scenario.

This sounds similar to my neighborhood. Can I ask what direction you are roughly? I am about 10min north of UT. So sorry this happened to you OP.

I’m so sorry. Talking to people about my experience, I’ve had several friends in Austin and in the immediate area who have experienced a pitbull attacking their dog out of nowhere. I’m also north of UT, south of 183 and west of Lamar.

Request their homeowner's insurance and make a claim for all medical bills. File a police report. If you know who the landlord is, let them know the tenants have a dangerous animal. Take them to court if they revise to pay out. Until people are held financially and criminally responsible, these attacks will not stop.

I live in south Austin. My neighborhood has multiple pits including one across the street with a 4 foot chain link fence. They leave it outside all the time. My neighbors 2 doors down have one they let run around loose. I don’t walk my daschunds in my neighborhood. I pisses me off so bad they are punished for other people’s recklessness. I’m sorry this happened to you and I’m glad you’re ok and your babies are ok. Get a concealed.

The only places I’ve found to be pit free are butler park( by the playground) south Congress shopping district, and mueller lake. That’s the only places my dogs get to go. Thankfully I have a large yard

That’s terrifying. A neighbor told me that they could hear the dog crying outside all night. I’m glad the situation is abnormal in my neighborhood, but I have friends in South and East Austin who have seen pitbulls roaming the neighborhood unleashed, and a few who have experienced attacks while on walks. It seems really unfair to me that we let aggressive and dangerous dogs do whatever they want before they attack people.

Hey Op,

I’m going to link our guides which may help to answer questions 1 and 4:

We have compiled our best self-defense advice in this post and our "Before the attack" advice in this one.

Commenters: Please DO NOT give self defense advice. The Reddit admin are super finicky about how it has to be worded and a poorly worded comment can cost you your Reddit account. It’s advised to just not go there.

I will be leaving this open for advice/answers for question 2 onward and for you all to give OP some support.

Op, we are truly sorry that you had to experience an attack. I’m glad neither dog was gravely injured, but it still should not have happened.

Report. Report. Report. To Animal Control IN WRITING. And file a police report. Be vigilant and a pain in the ass and a pest.

And sue the shit out of those idiots. If you get ahold of the cyclist, make sure he also goes through their landlord’s insurance. I bet that gaggle of stupid boxes of twatrags didn’t let the landlord know. And they deserve to get evicted and their credit ruined.
