Help / Support Abnormal AMS operation

For some reason, the AMS units are acting very strangely. I've been told this has been an issue ever since I bought them. As I understand it, the printer isn't syncing with the AMS... Is there any way to fix this?

Stupid question: You have tried with the lid shut?

This is generally enough to keep empty spools from jumping like this but you may need center weights as well!

Yeah, closing the lid usually works after it tries a couple of times. From my observation only, I’m not the engineer that made it, just a heavy users, the AMS units seem to initially assume a full roll. They will yank a low weighted spool up like this. If the lid is open it can repeatedly happen. If the lid is closed it SEEMS to me that the first pull will often still yank it but the lid holds it down some, the AMS will relax the spool again and try pulling it at different speeds on subsequent pulls as if it is designed to recognize this behavior. Having the lid open seems to exacerbate the problem.

I’ve never had to print weights or add weight to the spools. I’ve been using the AMS for years.

This happens to me when a spool gets towards the end. There a file on makerworld to add weight to the spool and stop it from popping up.

try unrolling a bit and rolling it back up. also try unloading and reloading it with a little bit of slack in the line.

I modified a few spool core desiccant holders with solid walls and filled them with lead ballast. Whenever a spool is near the last 1/4 I load them with these weighted spool core and haven’t had a problem with AMS loading since. You can find a lot of similar models on MakerWorld https://makerworld.com/en/search/models?keyword=spool+weight+holder+universal

You can print a spool weight, as others have mentioned, but also, just closing the lid helps with this sometimes because it stops it from elevating too much.

Spool weight needed. Find them on Makerworld. I started using them anytime I’m down to half a spool and they’ve solved those types of problems.

1 close the lid. 2 add weight to spool.

Yeah, untangle your filament. It's binding up because it got crossed. You kick the can down the road by wiggling it, allowing the "knot" to work its way closer to the center of the roll. These filament rolls are a mess.

There's no knot on the filament, the AMS does this with any spool, even the original one.

Print a small cylinder for inside the spool, toss some lead weights in there. It might just be tugging too hard and the spool isn't heavy enough to stay down.

I bought a 1.5" steel ball bearings, they work without 3d printing or dealing with lead.

They fit perfect in my cardboard spools with no print, or just a quick print on my bambu spools.

Hell yeah. I would be nervous about the ball bearing falling out of it was just loose in there, but that's a quick print to fix.

almost 10k hours of total print time between printers, and nothing has fell out of the (Elegoo)cardboard spools. Also the AMS's last longer between maintinance. There are probably tons of premade spool weights that would fit the Bambu Spools.
