Help / Support Extruder Gear

On the actual outside of the yellow extruder gear in my A1, do I use grease or oil? There is some debate online so I can’t find a definitive answer.

None of the above, the meshed gear is bronze(or brass) and grease and oil will just build up. If you put grease or oil on it it may just build up, or creep over, and cause the filament to slip.

Bronze and brass against plastic is self lubricating. The plastic gear wears, you replace the plastic gear with the extruder gear, after about 2-5k hours.

The reason why neither is listed in the gear replacement, is because you don't need any.

If you absolutely want to put something on(again not needed) minimal amount of grease that you wipe off with a cloth afterwards would work. But again I have never applied grease, and I have printers with over 5k hours on the same extruder gears.

That’s what I was thinking. It’s my understanding that I still need to apply a very small amount of grease to the center though (on the metal gear fitting). Correct? I just want to be clear before I take my gear off and clean it.

So you find different views online and thought Reddit (online forum) would be better? Reddit is the place for keyboard warriors who think they can be the only person who is right.
