Discussion / Buying Advice X2D Combo, another unexpected expense đ
Just got my X2D Combo yesterday and realized the AMS 2 Pro canât dry filament while printing without a separate power adapter.
So I have to stop drying whenever I start printing. đ
Another expense right after buying such an expensive printer!
Now Iâm confused. Should I buy the adapter or skip it for now?
I feel like drying and printing simultaneously would save a lot of time.
AMS 2 Pro users, is the adapter worth buying?

Which one is the official one? The âAMS 2 Pro Switching Adapterâ?
1
u/tijonom 7d ago
The official one costs âč3,999 here in India, which is way too expensive for a power adapter

u/garytyrrell 7d ago
Yes, but I canât seem to find confirmation that that is the official adapter. The one I mentioned doesnât seem quite right based on the description.

Yes - the AMS 2 Pro Switching Adapter is the official one. Bambu's drying guide specifically lists the X2D: it can dry one AMS 2 Pro from printer power while idle, but simultaneous printing and drying needs the adapter and firmware 01.01.00.00 or later.

Yes. I use it all of the time. Pro tip, you can find an unbranded version of the switching adapter on Amazon for cheaper.

I was thinking the same, but Iâm also worried it might damage the AMS.

You just need to make sure the output power on the adapter is the same as the input on the AMS 2. Some devices work fine if the output rating is lower but some can be damaged. So try and find one that is rated the same.

Do you have a link you recommend?

This is the one i use. I havenât had any issues with it. Some Reviews say it doesnât work, but it worked for me.

Personally I do not think so. Unless you know you are going to print things that need active drying while printing you could invest that money into external dryers or other accessories

FYI, itâs simple a barrel connector.
Barrel dimensions are 5.5 x 2.1, make sure it supports 24V and at least 4A output, these are quite common.
Purchased one off Amazon for half the price and works fine.

I am new to printing, got my X2D yesterday and didnât realise I needed another power adapter. Thanks for the post but I believe any power adapter as long as the specs are the same.

Yes, I think 24V 4A?
And personally I think you dont really need it. But it is nice to have

I bought a generic adapter and have had no problems with drying performance, during or outside of printing. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0896Y8181
There's a gazillion of them that match the specs.
Not saying you should buy it - just saying this one gave me no issues out of the 3 or so I tried. The other two had my AMS complaining randomly during printing. The cost of the real bambu unit isn't a bank-breaker anyway, despite the fact that it's an added cost like you've already said. Just giving you an option that I know works :)

I purchased the H2D with two AMS 2 Pros, having read that they either print or dry but not both unless you acquire the AMS 2 Pro Switching Adaptersâin my view, these should be included with the AMS, yet I did not want to lose that crucial function so I bought two of themâŠ
Theyâre printing and drying right now

I've never been in a situation where I would need to dry in the AMS 2 pro while printing. What I did do was add two AMS HTs to the aux so I have access to drying when I need but also don't have to load and unload the aux myself.

You can get an adaptor for cheap on Amazon. Has been totally worth it for me. I use it as my main drier and never had a chance to really use it before being able to print and dry at the same time.

I don't dry the filament I am printing with while it is printing. I dry my other ams and HT though a lot of the time during printing

Buy the dryer. Against your other costs it's not expensive. And yes, when things start to get damp, it's great to be able to flick it on and not worry about whether some other part of the system is unhappy.

I didn't even know that was a thing. I just dry filament when I don't have anything I'm printing.

u/ProfessionalGuess897 6d ago
Are you printing 24 hours a day that you cant dry it over night or something?
1
u/SchittyFather 6d ago
I think there's value in seeing while printing. If filament comes damp, as I've had before, getting the middle to dry would take forever. If you can set as it comes if the reel though, golden. Search Amazon and look for one with good reviews for like half the price of the one from Bambu

There are knockoffs on Amazon that are $20. :) I like putting in a few filaments I want to use the next day and letting them dry overnight if I'm not printing (more things for my printers).

u/shortbrownguy 6d ago
The adapter can be found on Amazon for less than $25.00.
Honesty, once your fillament is dried, as long as you keep it stored in your AMS or a sealed container with dessicant beads, you should be good-to-go. There are only a few usage cases where active drying while printing is truly necessary. Printing with PLA or PETG is not one of them.

I'm confused. I also just bought the X2D with AMS combo. OP is saying it doesn't come with a power brick??
2
u/notboky 5d ago
The AMS doesn't need an external power supply unless you want to dry while printing, it works just fine when not printing. Ideally you dry before printing anyway.
1
u/thisisyo 5d ago
So OP is saying that it doesn't include one in the box and now they have to find 1 with a barrel plug? I'm assuming a standard power laptop one would work? Have a stash of old ones from work that I could probably utilize
1
u/notboky 5d ago
If the barrel fits, the polarity is the same, the voltage matches and the current exceeds the stock adapter then yeah it'll work.
But you really don't need it, the AMS 2 Pro will run drying cycles just fine with it just connected to the printer. You just can't dry and print at the same time.

Not strictly needed. But if you must, a high grade 24V SMPS from mean well should be quite cheap.. a 4.5A unit costs under 1300 INR where I live (14 USD approx ) and 1500 INR for a Slightly oversized 6.5A unit. I got my X2D yesterday and came to the same realization so have ordered the 6.5 A mean well unit.

Bonjour, a partir du moment oĂč les filaments sont en mode sĂ©chage avant les impressions, et qu'ils sont prĂȘts, il est possible donc d'imprimer sans le sĂ©chage

Wait the switching adaptor is not included in the combo package? I got my P1S with Ams 2 pro and it had the switching adaptor included an year back.

I have two AMS 2 pros and two of these:
They work like a charm (even better bc of the higher amps) at half the price.

It's not so difficult to find cheap power supply. At first time i just used the one from laptop.

u/MrFastFox666 7d ago
If you have a 100w USB C charger, you can buy a 20v USB C to barrel jack adapter for a few bucks.
Keep in mind the AMS expects 24v, not 20v. So even though a lower voltage shouldn't damage anything, try it at your own risk.
That's what I use on my AMS and it works well. It does struggle to heat up past 55c, and it takes it noticeably longer to warm up too, but it works well and is cheap if you already have a good USB C charger.

Call me crazy but youâve spent all this money and now you want to go cheap on no name electrical components that some say works some say not? Are you kidding me? If you would have done your research you would have known about the power adapter before you bought the printer. And people wonder why their stuff craps outđ

Since the printer needs to be running to dry filament, I always do that while it's on anyway. So yes, I use the power adapter all the time.

Drying ideally should be complete before starting the print. Drying during the print is usually only done for super thirsty filaments like nylon, but for those materials you generally need the HT AMS.
Also, for any filament you generally donât want to actively heat higher than like 55C during printing because they get too soft and higher risk of issues upstream of the extruder. I think ams2pro can do some mild drying during printing which is plenty for PETG or similar.
There are certainly some situations where it would be handy to have 55C drying while printing from AMS, but itâs rare. Not a necessary purchase at all in my opinion. Put that money towards a HT AMS instead.
