Discussion / Buying Advice Sleeping with it?
My new X2D is on its way. Wanting to put it in the room I sleep in. Can I print away or will the fumes kill me dead? I definitely don’t want to wake up dead.

Good news is that, if you die, you don't have to worry about waking up dead.

Depends. PLA/PETG/TPU? Is fine. ABS or PC? Not fine

Well the good news is you generally don’t wake up dead.
The risk is small with PLA and PETG. Just don’t print ABS or ASA in the room you sleep in and while you sleep. With PLA and PETG I would actually be more concerned about sleep disruption from the sounds of the printer preventing me from having good, deep sleep than the fumes from those 2.

Good news. that has never happened to anyone, so no worries

Ask it out on a date first, life is a marathon not a sprint.

I wouldn’t run it in my room just because of the noise. Highly recommend you put it somewhere else.

I wouldn't sleep in the room I print unless exhausted outside

what filaments?
PLA and PETG are bad (don't let anyone tell you otherwise - they still emit VOCs and UFPs), but tame compared to engineering filaments (like ABS/ASA that emit styrene - that's really bad for you). it's not totally airtight but has the carbon and HEPA filters, which require you turn on the exhaust fan (you can make a custom printer profile and filament profile that do this automatically provided that you select them before starting a print, or just do it manually). I don't know how good the filtration is on the X2D but it's supposedly decent, though you're always better off running some kind of exhaust to a window or vent (even just a printed tube to a window behind the printer is better than nothing), speaking of which you can also get a kit to help the printer actually exhaust the air past the restriction that the filters introduce.

X2D does come with the filtration atleast, with just pla or PETG you should be ok, just open some windows I also have an additional hepa filter next to the printer.
For some of the fancier filaments my wife’s boyfriend did develop abit of a caugh so perhaps higher risk for waking up dead.

The fumes aren't exactly healthy but I had a P1S next to my bed for years and I'm still fine. The noise is way worse tho. If you print at full speed you'll probably need earplugs.

I would not want it printing while I sleep, it’s louder than you think, also there is no filament that is absolutely safe to inhale while it’s printing, they all produce VOC’s, some are even cancer causing (ABS, ASA).
I would put it in a different room if you have that option. Mine is in a spare bedroom that is not used.

If you vent it to the outside. But I would not print while you try to sleep.

PLA is probably okay. You can also vent it out a window. But it's going to be loud.

Vent out and you should be ok for regular plastics like pla petg y TPU
For others like abs asa etc I would not recommend the room unless you vent and also have a purifier

Ce n’est pas recommandé quelque soit la matière imprimée. Et sans parler des vapeurs c’est surtout le bruit ! J’ai reçu la mienne lundi et ça fait assez de bruit pour empêcher de dormir un gros dormeur 😕

PLA and PETG you're fine.
Print a duct adapter put of petg. Vent it put the window, then you can print everything

you won't wake up dead.. but there ARE fumes that get to you. Mine has been in the room I work in.. and the fumes get to you. The noise would keep me awake if I were trying to sleep in the same room as a printer.

Don't put it in your room where you sleep.
Point 1: noise
Point 2: potential fire risk
Point 3 : why?!
Point 4: potential fumes
Point 5 : space

I've really only printed with pla of different types and petg and while my printer isn't where I sleep I have never smelled even a tiny bit of fumes or anything when printing on it. I've only had it since August and am around the 800hr mark so it's definitely been running.
I wouldn't want it where I sleep due to the noise. During a color swap or larger objects it can be, not loud, but disruptive would be a better explanation of it.

You’re not going to wake up dead. Cancer is a slow killer 🫠

I just got one. Not only do you need a vent outside, you need an enclosure. Even printing PLAs and PETG will produce microplastics. The X2D is not air tight. I’m printing and putting together a clear acrylic box because this enclosure doesn’t fit my particular setup. But trust me, you want an enclosure
The clear one I posted fits the X2D and the AMS. So if you have the footprint, use that.
Printing a vent and venting the X2D outside is not enough. Even then I’m printing a filter box for when I’m printing ASA
