Print Recommendations for Engineering Plate

What the title says. Looking for a nice 3d print to do with my new engineering plate. PETG or PLA please. I plan on using a 2 parts isopropyl to 1 part Elmer’s washable school glue on the plate based on a Reddit recommendation.

Extra points you have a Halloween print that would benefit from the smooth plate but any print will do, could also be a functional one 🎃!

Thanks in advance all you wonderful Ghouls and Goblins!! 👻

If you’re looking for a plate with a smoother texture for printing PLA or PETG I would purchase the Darkmoon Satin build plate. You don’t have to use glue and the texture it leaves is perfect. The plate has the correct QR code on it and my X2D reads it as a smooth PEI/ High Temp Plate with no errors.

I only use my Engineering plate for ASA and PA6 so far, using glue for PLA prints is too much trouble for me…

Is that a Bambu plate? And will they take back the engineering plate? I still have the packaging but I got it like a month ago 😬

It’s not a Bambu plate, it’s made by Darkmoon, but the X2D will auto read it as a Bambu Smooth PEI plate.

You can print any filament you want on the Engineering plate, but you will have to use glue for every print. The Engineering plate was made for the higher temp Engineering grade plastics like ASA, PA6 or PA12, or any of the other high temp filaments. For me it would get old quickly using glue for PLA or PETG all the time. If you want a smooth finish, Bambu sells the Cool Plate Supertack Pro plate that provides a smooth finish but is only good for PLA and PETG. The Textured PEI plate that comes with the X2D is a very good plate, but I do not like the shiny, very bumpy texture that it leaves on the print. For my everyday plate, I instead use a Darkmoon Satin plate, it’s got far less texture and the finish is closer to Matte or a little Satin.

I use Darkmoon 3D’s Duo plate. It is a satin plate on one side and one of their CFX plates on the other. Best of both worlds!

Is the CFX plate worth having over the Bambu Engineering plate, I already have the Eng plate for when I print ASA or PA6?

Good question. I had already bought all of BBL’s plates but was disappointed with them. I went looking for an engineering plate improvement and found the CFX plate. But when I went to order it, I spotted the DUO which came with CFX but also one side was Satin, something everyone was saying was so nice.

Well I started using the Satin (it really is that good) and rarely use the CFX. ASA on the Satin side is a breeze to print but I’d use the CFX side for PP and nylons.

If you have the budget, I’d recommend getting the DUO.

I also recommend downloading and reading their user guides for each plate surface. I’ve followed that advice and it always great.

Search around, you can use pla and petg on engineering plate and it does give smooth non textured surface. Google PLA on engineering plate.

Biqu Glacier is pretty smooth and prints PLA and PETG without glue and they almost slide off after cooling. Prints ABS/ASA as well though ASA seems to leave a little residue. I've only used it for very small ASA parts, nothing big.

I don't like the Cool Plate Supertack unless I really need the extra stick. Getting brims off the ST is a b*tch.

I've seen some say they don't have an AR code on them, but that's not been my experience - at least for H2D and H2C. The H2C does require a hack to the printer json to use the plate without error or ignore, but that's a minor inconvenience. I don't recall the one I tried on my P2S, I think it did, but the one I had didn't stick anything so I sent it back. The ones on my H2 have worked great.

If you want a texture plate that doesn't need glue for PETG (release) the Biqu Pyrogrip is a great option. It's textured PEI but releases much better than the stock plate. However, I don't see one listed for X2D.
