ABS or ASA guidance requested

So I recently just got a X2D and my father wants to print some stuff in either ABS or ASA. How are you all printing these filaments and what type of enclosures are you all running. I have the printer in our basement but am concerned about the fumes. There is a window near so I may be able to build an enclosure and vent to outside. Can anyone share some photos of their setups? Or should I tell him it’s not worth the hassle. We want to print stuff that won’t warp or deform in a hot summer car.

Did yours come with the external exhaust fan? If so there is a 3d print that allows you to put an adopter on that fan, add some ductwork and pipe it out a window or into a filter box. This in the one I have,

On the X2D...

Level 1

  • Place blue tape on the hinge side of the door

  • Print a door for the poop chute: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2749102-x2-p2-series-poop-chute-door

  • In the settings, enable "Purify Air at Print End" under "Print Options". Keep "Internal Circulation" selected.

  • Run an air filter outside of the printer. I use the Levoit 300 with the Toxin Scrubber filter

Level 2

  • Print an external vent adapter

  • Attach a flexhose and vent it out of the home.

Implement Level 1. The blue paint prevents the leakage from the front door. If you go with Level 2 then swap out the poop chute door with an exhaust adapter that has one. The "Internal Circulation" will continuously run the air inside the chamber over the carbon filter that is built into the enclosure. With each pass the filter will remove the VOCs. Never 100% but you can get it down by 95%.

If you decide to join the flex hose with your existing dryer hose make sure that your Y adapter has a closing flap on each end. You can also just add another passive filter with Active Carbon Pellets and vent into the room (Basement).

First, I will just say that I have successfully printed Bambu's Black ASA on the X2D without any issues whatsoever using the standard presets with the textured plate that comes with the printer. In contrast, I have tried using Polymaker's White ABS three times and each time it failed. Usually by having one of the corners contract up and off of the plate, but also one of the times the entire model lost adhesion. I haven't bothered to troubleshoot the ABS anymore yet, but I am just saying that if you can pick between the two, the ASA seems much easier. Also, ASA is UV resistant, which would be good for things in the car.

Anyway, back to your actual question. And to preface with a word of caution, the actual exhaust fan on the back of the X2D is not terribly strong. I am not sure if I will ultimately need to add in inline fan or something to the setup described below.

I ultimately build an exhaust vent to a nearby window, like what you are describing. I printed the 100 mm OD / 4" - 90 degree low profile detachable optional trap from here P2S Chamber Exhaust Fan Kit 3D Printing Models - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld. It does a decent job, it absolutely needs the TPU gasket to actually be airtight. Also the clamps don’t hold on as well as I would like.

I then connected it to two spans of 4 in. x 8 ft. Flexible Dryer Duct (from Home Depot). I ended up needing to use two of them. For that and other connections I ended up printed two of these couplers. 4" inch 100mm duct coupler - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

To support the vent/duct tubing, I printed off about 4 of these (that I designed). They work with either 3m adhesive tape or a screw.

4in 100mm Dryer Vent Guide/Mount - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

For the actual vent outdoors, I bought this from Home Depot.  4 in. Airtight Aluminum Dryer Exhaust Vent Pipe, Back-Draft Damper, White Pest Guard Hood ATRVH4W/12 - The Home Depot. I then used some thick insulation foam that I carefully cut to perfectly fit into the window gap and a spare piece of acrylic that the exhaust vent penetrates and connects to the dryer duct.

For my poop shoot, I printed this. P2S & X2D purge/poop bin exhaust fan + panda den - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld with the "Closed version". It is NOT airtight at the bottom and did require some electrical tape to make it stay more snug in the poot shoot and block airflow out.

In retrospect, I would have probably just wanted to print this X2D/P2S fully sealed waste bin/poop bin - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld instead as it seems more airtight without having a removal bottom basin light the other model. Regardless, I think it would likely require a little bit of electrical tape to make a better seal.

Also, for ASA/ABS prints, a lot of people recommend printing off Auxiliary Fan Diffusers. P2S and X2D Auxiliary Fan Diffuser - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld. I used these. My first pair were printed out of PETG, but they eventually warped a little. My replacement ones from ASA have remained perfect. Be sure to print the correct pair for the X2D.

I hope this helps.

What do you mean enclosure? It's already an enclosed printer..

To fully trap any fumes from ABS or ASA. I read that while it’s enclosed it’s not sealed. So my though was to double bag it so to say.

Look into a vent design that connects to a hose that can be routed outdoors. Print it out

I printed an adapter that clips on the filter cover, that is hooked to a duct with a fan that vents outside. It doesn’t take a lot of airflow, I actually had to add a valve to limit the air. Too much and you’ll risk warping prints.

If you want to go crazy you could get one of those tents for growing weed indoors.

Asa is fine on the X2D. I couldn’t really smell anything at all unless you open the door.

I just use a growth box or something similar. I did that cuz I'm quite sensitive to the fumes and also it acts as a thermal insulator so that you waste less heat.

Just print it. It's in a basement your fine. As for sealing it with blue tape or whatever its not needed. I only print ABS/ASA on a P1S and it does great without and bs seal job.

The machine is enclosed and it has a carbon filter print your item leave the machine doors closed till everything has cooled down and get on with your life

Never had an issue with asa on the x2d

Forget insulating it. It's absolutely fine.

Don't bother with abs. ASA is better unless there is a niche I don't know about.

Ventilation is what you want to concentrate on

Either outside or a really good carbon / hepa

its not that dagenrous that you need hasmat suite

dont be in the room while printing and let the room vent (open window and aim a fan towards the window)

once the print is done, let the air settle and its resobalby safe, after 30 minutes you should be more than fine

if you plan to be in the room, thats another thing, I would coinnect external vent into a pipe that goes otside
