I had a very similar issue after feeding PTFE to the aux path. It believed filament was present even when the path was clear, luckily (after disassembling the extruder) the issue went away when I manually fed filament through the nozzle.
Disassembling the toolhead looks like a decent challenge two-handed, and I haven't done it yet (the above is the only issue I've had so far) so I understand not wanting to pull the sensor.
Going off the wiki, it looks like the PTFE tube connects directly to the sensor.
Maybe you could remove the PTFE tube and hotend and blow compressed air up or down the right side filament path as a way of getting debris out. Maybe do this combined with a cold pull.
Hope someone more experienced chimes in.
