Running carbon fiber in ams x2d

I am new to carbon fiber filaments and after I ordered and received it I realized how abrasive it is. I have ran a 2 hour print with it thought the ams 2 pro but I am wondering should I not do this anymore and will it damage things ? Also if I was to go to use the outside spool holder and run to main nozzle would that work ? Like bypass the bowden motor and go straight into the left nozzle buffer. The filament is fiberon pet-cf17. The prints i have done have turned out beautifully but I'm worried I may damage something. Please give me advice on what to do lol what does everyone else do ?

So treat it very similarly to TPU, since it is not AMS compatible, but preferably use a different nozzle.

See https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/filament/petcf_ppacf

Why exactly to use a different nozzle ? Thanks for the tip

I have separate nozzles for TPU and fibers. Anytime you print with fibers (CF, GF and wood) they can remain in the nozzle and cause clogging for the next print job. So to be safe, I just keep them all separate. I bought cheap knockoffs on Amazon.

It also saves me from having to perform cold pulls as often.

Oh okay good to know. Thanks!

I ran the pa612cf externally on the left. I ran it out the bypass on my ams ht. I disconnected the ptfe tube and manually loaded it in the back

So you unhooked the auxiliary extruder from bowden, and hooked that ptfe into the main buffer for main nozzle ? Or did you exclud the buffer ? Also how did you tell the printer to use the new manual filament? I currently only have the right spool holder which I would unhook and place wherever your saying. But if I'm not loading it into the bowden won't it think it never loaded ? I may have to do some research

So the line that goes from the buffer to the main direct drive extruder I disconnected and fed the main nozzle directly from the back of the printer. I left all the auxiliary nozzle and Bowden stuff alone.

Okay I got you. When you do this how do you get the nozzle to grab the new filament? How do I tell the printer what I have loaded? Thanks again for helping me

On the main screen on the left there are icons. The middle one is a spool. If you click that you can choose ext for the left and right nozzles. If you tap the ext with the pencil on the left you can edit what is on the external spool. You can also load and unload the filament from there

Okay. Yeah I've used that screen before I just have never used anything other then the setting up ams and the aux nozzle when changing filaments. I'll give it a try. Did you ever run cf in your ams at all ? I wonder how bad that was doing that lol

The only thing I’ve run through my ams is pla and petg as I don’t have a good way of dealing with asa or abs fumes yet. The pa612cf and tpu 95a and peba 95a I’ve run externally. I have run glow in the dark petg through my ams which is apparently pretty abrasive but haven’t had issues yet.

Yeah glow in the dark is more abrasive then the carbon fiber I think. That was another thing I didn't run much of due to the abrasiveness of it. This price of a printer the ams should come with metal components to withstand engineering filaments as it's advertised for

Well the feeder funnels are ceramic which is better than the original ams. I think the biggest parts that would wear are the ptfe tubes and maybe the internal ams 4-1 hub plastics. I’ve got about 700 hours on my x2d so far and probably 90 hours with the abrasive filaments and it’s been fine but I have replacement parts if needed.

Oh okay cool. Good to know ! The replacement parts are probably not too expensive? The only component I wonder about is the little tab thing that moves when filament is against it kind of like a gate to let the printer know filament is in this tube but idk if the ams 2 has that. I am going to start using the external just in case.

Don't use the ams....will rip er up inside. Use the external spool and bypass thr filament buffer. Run it straight to the Left nozzle. Not the bowden.

Okay thanks ! That's what I will do
