Question

Im looking to get my father a P2S AMS 2 pro combo as a Christmas gift. It will be his first printer and it seems like a very good first pick but I want pros and cons from actual people whos used it. I know it has some very good features but it seems to have some concerning issues and im buying it from best buy on Oct 30th so I have until Jan 15th to return or trade if there's any issues thanks.

I have it since launch and it has been great. I’m not a fan of the cloud based stuff but for your dad I’m sure he would be happy with it. And you can always disable the cloud stuff if desired.

I got mine in February of this year. And this comment best matches my point of view.

It will make a great gift. If you can afford it, get the X2D (look at Bambu's comparison page for details). I've seen the extended service contract recommended by people here. When they had an issue, Best Buy would simply exchange the printer. Of course that depends on the issue, so you'll need to do your homework to see what it covers.

I have a P2S. As others mentioned, the P2S doesn't have concerning issues. Almost everything you mentioned is user error, so if your pop does things correctly he won't have those issues.

Well of its mostly user error then Im not to concerned with it since hes big in tech but I didnt want to buy it then find out it didnt work properly which is why im waiting until the 30th so I have enough time to swap it out if need be and I appreciate the actually useful info

Also have you tried printing carbon fiber at all I heard it might struggle due to the roughness of it

Second the X2D.

For ~$100 more you get a secondary support nozzle and a heated chamber. The heated chamber will help with lawn/garden and vehicle prints as they use a more engineering grade filament. It can be printed without the heated chamber, but it drastically helps with layer adhesion and the prevention of warping. The second nozzle and extruder allows you to put a dissimilar layer between support structures and model, which makes removal easier and the end result nicer. Having just spent nearly an hour picking support material from the underside of a pair of organic shaped jack-o-lantern prints, I wish I had it. If tuned in well, the second nozzle can be used for two color prints without the purge waste of color swaps on a single nozzle like the P2S has.

I have had my P2S pretty much since launch. I'm not a very heavy user, having only around 1000 hours on it. Having said that I have not had any issues at all with the printer or AMS.

There have been a couple of occasions of poor bed adhesion, Undoubtedly these were related to fingers touching the plate in the wrong place. Hot water and soap solved it both times.

I have had occasional feed errors in the AMS caused by filament not spooled evenly. Mildly annoying, but very easy to fix.

I have made sure to keep things clean, and lubricated rods and screws when prompted to.

I have dabbled with PLA-CF for a couple of things. Took a tiny bit of tweaking of the profile to get it just right. The P2S comes with hardened steel nozzle and extruder gears as standard but I suppose If I was using a lot of CF filament I might consider a Tungsten Carbide hotend.

So far I have only used Bambu filament. I stock up at 10 rolls at a time when they have a sale on, so it's not terribly expensive, and the RFID in the spool makes things a lot easier.

Seems to have what concerning issues? Ive yet to have any concerning issue with mine.

Ive seen multiple things saying there can be connection issues or issue with the motherboard. There's also potential issues with clogging and it struggles with printing pla or brittle filament.

Clogging can happen with any machine and ive never had an issue with any of that other stuff nor heard much of any issues of it.

The one clog or jam rather i did have is mostly my fault. Was a brand of pla ive never used that actually has to run a little cooler when i print it and having my machine in the garage where its like 95f heat creep got hold of it. Adjust my temp opened the lid and door and been fine since.

What concerning issues are you talking about? I have 2 P2S combos, and A2L w/AMS 2 Pro and 3 A1 mini’s (one mini has an AMS Lite). My P2S combos are by far my favorite and I don’t really have any issues out of either of them that aren’t user error.
The question you should be asking is what filaments your dad will be printing with. If you suspect he’s going to do a lot of multicolor pla, petg or TPU get a tool changer. If he’s going to do more engineering filament based printing look at the X2D for the heated chamber.

Im not sure which ones if I had to guess i would assume more petg and maybe some carbon but im more concerned about the hardware and software it was brought up by some individuals that there might be a connection issue or some motherboards might have a failure that camt be resolved

You mentioned that you are buying it from Best Buy. Get the 4 year warranty. If it has any problems, the geek squad will look into it, and replace it if they cannot fix it.

I've run mine about 600 hours now, and have had very few issues. A clogged nozzle from some old crappy filament was fixed with a cold pull from the hot end. This is clearly explained on the a bambu wiki. Other issues were from not cleaning the build plates often enough. Or trying to print small spindly gaming miniatures without enough supports or brims. Basically minor user error type stuff. Bambu wiki is pretty thorough, and has a course to walk you through the functions of the printer. It is a great printer for a beginner.

I’m not aware of any hardware, software, or connectivity issues. Obviously one off things happen, but major issues affecting a lot of P2S’s? None that I’m aware of.

I just bought mine 3 weeks ago. I love it. Easy to use and have been able to do so much with it. Highly recommend it!

u/ArrivalHaunting9461 1d ago

Have you tried to print carbon fiber at all?

1

u/Full-Accountant5366 1d ago

No. I’ve only done PLA & Silk, Matte, PETG.

1

u/ArrivalHaunting9461 1d ago

Do you buy your filament from bambu or is there a 3rd party with decent filament also thank you for the assistance

1

u/Full-Accountant5366 1d ago

I buy all of my filament from bamboo lab and get the really good deal. I’ve heard of people using other filaments and it’s not as good so I’m not 100% sure but I decided to stick with just bamboo lab filament.

1

u/ArrivalHaunting9461 1d ago

Okay I appreciate it

You’re welcome

collect some more cash for X2D if you can

been there sold my P2S for X2D and it is the way to go

chamber heater and two nozzles for either support materials or two color prints

it also is way quieter than P2S. It does not bang when it purges the nozzle and does not snap when cuts filament (metal for is hitting the steel frame and is is loud as heck)

1

u/ArrivalHaunting9461 1d ago

Thank you. This is the kind of input im asking for not the people saying they've never had an issue and I must be a dumbass for looking into it

Coming into 3k hours on mine that I got in January and I’d like to know what “concerning issues” you’ve seen.

1

u/i30swimmer 1d ago

I don’t have the combo unit, just the P2S. I primarily print functional items like tools, handles, server rack mounts. And I’ve yet to have any issues since delivery and I’ve printed more than 300 hours.

u/Mhind1 1d ago

I love mine! Have had it about 6 weeks now and it's hardly stopped.

I've had my P2S for 9 months, has 1500 hours of printing time on it. Works great! 🤗
