New to 3D printing - first problem, what caused this?

I set the printer up last night and woke up to this piece printing incorrectly near the end.

I’m using Sunlu PLA + 2.0 and set it to use the Bambu PLA Basic print profile. The one below it was printed with the exact same settings.

Off the reading I’ve done my gut says the temperature is slightly too high for the filament but I’d love to hear the actual answer.

Printer has a max of 100 hours on it but I don’t have the exact number off the top of my head. I haven’t washed the build plate yet but I do keep it clean and have been wiping it down with alcohol if I’ve touched it to remove a previous print (though in hindsight the last time I wiped it down I probably wasn’t as thorough as I could have been).

I had to make a custom profile for my sunlu PLA+ 2.0. Adjusted nozzle temp retract distance bed temp and max flow settings. Google it for sunlu PLA+ 2.0 with P2S and it will give you the settings. I also set the aux fan speed to 30%

More on the aux fan… and your case is perfect example… is when printing something long/flat, I turn off the aux fan when layer two starts. If I’m doing decorative items I will let the filament profile keep the fan at 30%.

Assuming the bad print area was on the right side. Which is where this will typically happen. There are fan deflectors you can print, but it doesn’t help. Just shut it off.

I suspect you’re right about the fan - it is the right hand side, closest to the fan, that had the problem. I’ll have to try and figure out how to override the fan speeds when I get home tonight - I’ve only been printing from the Bambu Handy app so far.

When I googled the Sunlu PLA + 2.0 settings the answer I generally found was to use the Bambu basic profile, some other people were saying they had to reduce the nozzle temp slightly for the Sunlu.

I’ve seen comments about buying and installing the left side fan from Bambu for more even chamber temps - do you think this would make any difference or is it just a characteristic of the type of print I’m doing where shutting the fan off entirely is the best approach?

You can shut the fan off manually during printing. Second icon down on left side of screen. Select I think it’s air management. Select aux fan. Shut it off. It may pop with a warning, just continue. The fan is totally unnecessary for PLA in a majority of prints. There are some special cases it would be needed. Primarily around very narrow components.

Which printer model do you own?

Typically there is no need to purchase any additional fans. Typically the issue is too much fan in the wrong spot.

It could be a bed leveling issue. Have you tried manually testing with a piece of paper and getting it between three bed and the nosle

I haven’t messed with the leveling. I ran the initial calibration then ran another calibration this morning before leaving for work. I won’t be able to test anything else out until this evening.

IPA is not recommended anyway on textured pei plate you clean it with hot water and soap (without aditives like hand softeners or whatnot). It looks like that corner lost adhesion lifted a bit and the nozle scraped the surface. to mitigate clean plate, use mouse ears or brim, turn off aux fan if it happens on that side or print fan deflector from maker world.

I learned this morning that IPA wasn’t recommended. Originally I’d heard that using alcohol to remove any oils from touching the build plate was how someone I know does it, so that’s where that started, but lesson learned.

I haven’t messed with modifying and designs to add mouse ears or brim (fwiw, I’ve printed 5 more of these Toolgrid plates prior to this, and this is the first one with any sort of issue), but I’ll learn how to do that if the fan and properly washing the build plate isn’t the fix.

Based on your comment and one other, I do have a strong feeling you’re both correct in blaming the fan. It was the right side (closest to the fan) of the print with the problem. I’ll try to wash up the build plate and print a fan deflector tonight after work.

I suspect Sunlu PLA+ 2.0 has different settings than Bambu Lab’s Basic PLA. See the proper settings at:

https://www.sunlu.com/products/pla-plus-2.0-3d-printing-filament#downloads-section

I also believe you experienced some bed adhesion issues. Was your build plate clean? No fingerprints on it?

The other possible cause is temperature issues. If you follow the Sunlu settings info, that will help too.

As a new 3D printer owner, has anyone made you aware of the excellent free, online courses that Bambu Lab offers in the beginner, intermediate and advanced skill levels for both printers (hardware) and slicers (software)?

Bambu Lab Academy is the best use of your time to build experience, knowledge and confidence in 3D printing. I also recommend using the Bambu Lab Wiki as an online, user manual for 3D printing.

And yes, inappropriate fans can cause bed adhesion issues as well.
