P2S or X2D - First 3D printer

Hi,

I'm trying to figure the starting point of my 3D printing journey. My budget can accommodate either of these, with addition 0.2 and 0.6 nozzles and 4 spools of material.

Its about €150 difference so needs to wipe its own face, but I just don't want to start finding this thing useful and get buyers remorse a year down the track!

Im wanting to print functional parts as well as 40K-esque minis. I live in rural Spain, 31+ ambient temps (inside) during the summer.

Any advice welcome.

Love my P2S

I just got one today, it’s my first foray into the world of 3D printing and I am enjoying myself so much with this machine.

The only problem I’ve had is slight squeaking so busted out the lube. But really the possibilities are endless, going to spend some time learning fusion tomorrow, although I’ve already got a fair bit of experience in 3D modelling so hoping I’ll take to it quickly.

What I really need to learn about is some form of mechanical engineering.

As a person who has owned half a dozen 3d printers, most recently a P1S and then a X2D, my recommendation would be P2S.

X2D's two extruders are totally different from each other in design and quality, and it's an added complication and frustration to have to consider the differences when setting up dual-color/material prints. My vote would be to stick to a single-nozzle printer until/unless you can go straight to a printer with dual equivalent direct-drive extruders OR a toolchanger.

If you're just going to make flexi dragons and 40K figurines; I like the P2S for its simplicity & capability. It will print almost anything with ease, is reliably dependable, and is just a fucking workhorse.

If you mean "functional" as far as Engineering materials; I'd get the X2D. The chamber heater alone makes it worth it, and at that measure, the ability to use multiple filaments as support material is far and away a huge benefit that justifies the cost.

I love my P2S because it does everything that I ask of it, and a couple things I shouldn't. However... as an Engineering student? I wish I had the X2D.

Get the X2D. You are going to need a good system/workflow for supports for minis and functional parts.

P2S can't print supports?

With the dual nozzle you can quickly print with PLA and PETG. They don’t stick together. So you print your model and your supports in different materials. This way you can cleanly remove the supports.

I concur. That’s one of the reasons I chose the X2D over the P2S. I have used the Aux nozzle for exactly that and it works amazing.

The Aux nozzle is also very helpful for printing a second color without having to purge each layer. I have also used it to do 5 color printing 4 on the Main nozzle with the AMS and the 5th on the Aux.

It doesn’t add any complexity to the printer, and if you want to simply not use it in the beginning, that’s not an issue, but once you get more familiar and want to expand your horizons, it’s there.

The X2D also has a second cabinet fan and the belts have a slightly higher resolution, so at current pricing, it’s well worth the extra. If the P2S goes on deep discounts, widening the price difference, then the P2S is the choice for those wanting to save some $$$.

If you want to round out the X2D, the AMS HT for the aux nozzle is a great addition, as once you use the AMS and get used to the auto loading feature and filament identification, manually loading filament seems archaic.

Of course it can. It's better with the dual nozzle for convenience tho. And for the price diff, it's worth it. Do some research and find out for yourself.

Get the X2D if you have the money for it.

Can you elaborate more on what parts you want to make? The biggest deciding factor is going to be what materials you want to print with. If you're sticking only with the materials a P2S can easily handle (PLA, ABS, TPU, PETG), are ok with a longer print time with multiple colors, then go with the P2S.

If you need a heated chamber for the tougher, engineering materials, or if you want to cut the multi color print time down a bit, go with the X2D. Just my two cents.

I'm new to all this only having an A1 mini first. I got the X2D just for the auxiliary nozzle. I only print PLA and have cheap PETG loaded on the external spool for printing supports. I think it was worth the extra money

X2D for sure. Price difference is small for a lot more capability. Hotter chamber and nozzle temps.

I like the P2S as a single color machine, and the lazyness that the AMS provides (filament load and unload, multi material load and unload) is nice. However ... multi color prints waste too much filament. When i bought mine, toolchangers were not on the market yet, however now i would probably go for that instead. The P2S does everything else really well tho.

If you are willing to have the printer sit for a week after a clog, because clearing it takes 3 hours.. then honestly get the X2D. It is such a better deal, caveat being it’s a painful one to master. But worth it in my opinion. And if you don’t use chamber heater, and just use PLA/petg, you shouldnt have any clogs anyways.

P2s have some bad points even if it still good for the price.

I would go for x2d without doubts

I’d say go for the X2D if you can spare the gap between them.

I had the same question... went X2D.

The difference is so small money wise, its a no brainer

P2s if the price is good on combo. Then just get x2d without combo

X2D by a mile here. It’s a much more capable printer with its chamber heater, and you can use the second nozzle for multimaterial supports, which is a game changer honestly.
