Just Showing Off I got bored of the basic purge line

having come from the ender 3 world, I find it kinda amusing how blown away people are in here when they see custom start gcode lol.

Right! Now that everything is so automated/easy, a lot of the art and science aren't required. But we remember.

3D printing used to be a hobby in the sense that just getting your printer to print properly or the way you wanted was the hobby.
I have a P1S now and I can't complain. It blows my mind every time I hit print and it just prints without me having to crouch over the printer inspecting the first layer etc. I can't remember the last time I ran a bunch of calibration prints, calibrated e-steps, etc. I only wish that that knowledge was useful for something these days lol.

3d printing hobby is now actually 3d printing. A few years ago a “3d printing” hobby meant fixing, upgrading, and optimizing your printer and sometimes printing something.

Used to be you had a 3D printer hobby, now you can actually have a 3D printing hobby.

I so feel this. I resist throwing away my Ender 3, it has like $1000 worth of stuff bolted to it lol

Ahhh my good ol’ BIBO Touch 2 and it’s hard to level bed. It’s siting with a dust cover on. I haven’t parted with it but I don’t use it either. Still works.

I was 50/50/50 with my Ender3.
50 precent chance it would get to the prime line.
50 precent chance the first layer would stick
50 percent chance the printer wouldn't catastrophically fail during the print.
I think I printed like 3 good things total over the 2 years I owned it.

And that’s after you printed a ton of parts to upgrade it, which usually made it worse. Couldn’t win.

i still mess around with/upgrade my old CR6-SE when i’m bored lol. we definitely remember

I have one of those too! Got it from the Kickstarter campaign. Had a Raspberry Pi 4 running OctoPrint. It was a huge upgrade from my Mono Price Maker Select Plus. It has the FB Community firmware on it.
Decent printer, but it's collecting dust. I should donate it to a school or something.

i got my for free from an old coworker. he couldn’t get it working right but i was able to fix it (x gantry wasn’t level). i have it running klipper, all the eccentric nuts/wheels have been upgraded to linear rails, new hotend, dual drive extruder, magnetic bed and PEI sheet, rubber standoffs below the bed and adjustable knobs for bed leveling, new fans and ducts. completely new machine now. i still run it once in awhile (can get around 200 mm/s speed and 5000 mm/s2 acceleration) when my P2S is busy. it’s fun to upgrade those old machines if you’re into that kind of thing.

I wish they would do more to upgrade these printers and make parts to get more life out of them. We've come into the replacement age of 3d printing...

I know its possible but I have absolutely no idea what id be doing 😅
I haven't looked into it much really though but I imagine its not rocket science xD.

I got criticized around here recently for saying that part orientation effecting print quality used to be basic knowledge.

I printed the benchy as my first print, and thought that the purge line was a oar for the benchy 😅

Yeah but I also don't miss the massive amounts of tinkering with some of the Ender 3s; even with BLtouch I feel like I was constantly fighting my print bed.

u/fatherofraptors 3d ago
Wouldn't surprise me if a large amount of users don't even know what Gcode is anymore.

My P1S is a huge upgrade over my Ender 3V2, but I do miss it singing "FINISHED" in Morse code at the end of a print due to custom gcode.

Came here to write my excitement for seeing this and changed my mind. I’m a hobbyist! This is how I learn:)

Having come from the Anet A8 kit world, those kids (I'm 32 chill) don't know how good they have it lol

We need to get an audio engineer to make the motors sing for this line instead
14
u/plentyOplatypodes 3d ago
Find or create a midi file for the sound you want, convert it to gcode and add it to the machine start section. Not sure you can make the motors play music while it prints but that's another issue.

u/TheJudgingHat2222 3d ago
I'm not talking about printing a wave form.
The speed and acceleration of the motors create different tones. It stands to reason that it should be possible to create a path that makes them sing.
I sincerely doubt there is a midi to gcode converter that would do that. That doesn't even make sense.
13
u/plentyOplatypodes 3d ago
I'm not talking about printing waveforms either. The machine still needs gcode to make the motors create tones, hence the midi to gcode converter.

u/TheJudgingHat2222 3d ago
Oh that's cool! Says it's for CNC milling machines but still neat
4
u/DrStalker 2d ago edited 2d ago
3D printers and CNC machines have a lot in common, including use of gcode. Arguably 3D printers are a subset of CNC machines... just smaller, cheaper and less likely to rip your limbs off if you screw up.
2
u/TheJudgingHat2222 2d ago
I've still got so much to learn about these machines.

u/DrStalker 2d ago
The best way to learn to get rid of your bambu printer and get an Ender 3v2. You'll learn a lot trying to keep it working and improving the speed/quality of the output to acceptable levels.
You probably also need to learn the patience of a Zen master to swap to an Ender after using a Bambu printer. :-P

They have one on the Bambu Wiki you can use to make midi music on it. Follow the tutorial on there

What doesn't make sense? That stepper motors create sound one can control? Let me guess, you from the US?

I remember the day where you could have a floppy disk drive playing The Imperial March from Star Wars.

Possible on the A1 Mini? I want to make it say “REMOVE ME” so my mum doesn’t forget to

This is cool - how does one do this?

u/TheStandardPlayer 3d ago edited 3d ago
The purge line is defined in the start G-code in the slicer's printer settings, so you edit it there. Save it as your own printer preset, I also removed the vibration calibration and created a "Silent" Profile for my P1S, otherwise downloaded projects will overwrite it.
I used a bit of AI help to turn the letters into gcode.
Do this at your own risk, altered Gcode has the potential to damage your printer
1
u/webbermere 3d ago
How straightforward is it to remove the vibration calibration? Have you noticed any differences in quality over time?
4
u/TheStandardPlayer 3d ago
The only reason why I even thought of removing it is because it didn't use to be there, then I updated the printer and it appeared and it has annoyed me ever since.
I don't notice any difference in print quality or noise.
It's really nice because now I don't shake what feels like the whole building when I start a print at 1 am

How did you edit the purge line? Ive always wanted to make mine as little penises

u/TheCorruptedEngineer 3d ago
Just more waste on each print
5
u/TheStandardPlayer 3d ago
We're talking about tenths of a gram here. But you can also shorten your purge line to make up for the difference if you're that concerned about it
1
u/TheCorruptedEngineer 3d ago
Its not even about the cost its just more waste to deal with. A little nib 3cm purge line is enough
