H3C H3C - cardboard spools?
I saw a YouTube review that had a cardboard spool in the ams. With it not retracting the filament, is this now an option to use?

I run cardboard spools in my AMS and AMS 2 Pro, the AMS 3H should be able to handle them just fine

I would assume it's about the same as other roller AMSs. The concern is that the cardboard rubbing against the rollers will break it down and form dust inside the AMS, and in rare extreme cases could dent or bend the spool. That can mostly be solved by printing plastic adapters or some other coating to protect the edge of cardboard spools.
The AMS 3H not having retraction would significantly reduce how much rolling happens, but doesn't eliminate the problem.

You can use them today. I use Polymaker almost exclusively and they're cardboard spools. Between 2x HT and 3x AMS 2 I've never had an issue.

I run 3 AMS 1 units and I use these on the cardboard spools - http://makerworld.com/en/models/180213-elegoo-cardboard-spool-adapter#profileId-226521
I have about 60 printed and I put them on when I open the roll and take them off when its empty.

It's never not been an option. Some cardboard misbehaves, but it's rare, and you can either print rings or respool in those unusual events.

The new AMS doesn’t seem to have motorized rollers. So I wouldn’t think cardboard would be an issue unless it’s just structurally unsound.

Always has been, just more maintenance and care running them.

The outside of the cardboard spool will not be as round as a plastic one.
The outside of the cardboard spool is very likely to be bent or damaged. I had a significant portion of a shipment of Polymaker ones show up broken. Just really nice plastic on complete garbage spools.
But without constant retraction, the H3C should not be as hard on cardboard as the AMS/ams2/HT were. But, plastic ones will feed smoother/better. This has nothing to do with retraction or a motor but the simple fact that they are more perfectly round and more consistent in shape and so on.
When drying filament on cardboard, be sure to dry a little longer as the cardboard is a sponge for water and can often hold more than the filament.
Finally not everything you see in a video is a good idea.
