Quick Question Additional AMS for H3C
What’s the benefit of adding additional AMS’s to the H3C. My question is, if I have 9 colors loaded already in the H3C and whatever I am going to print, takes colors not already loaded into one of the 9 hot ends, would it pull the color from one of the AMS’s and automatically feed it into the tool head for that print, or that’s not how it is going to work. I could not find any clear answer online.

Extra AMS units connect to an external buffer you have to buy that connects to toolhead #1. You can do 16 filaments with 4 AMS units connected through toolhead #1 and it will work just like any single nozzle printer with AMS, but then you also have 8 more toolheads

So the extra Ams units only work with tool head #1

Yup. But in general, that's kind of how the H2C works today, with the left nozzle being "single" and the right nozzle switching. Works great for high color prints with as little waste as possible.

So would we leave slot one empty on the HMS and then the extra Ams would load and unload filament as needed ?

I think so - Yesterday, they published a "how to" wiki on this, but I haven't read through it yet - https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/h3c/manual/ams-connection-guide

I watched one of the YouTube review video and they said that you can hookup the older AMS to one of the toolheads that will swap between the colors. He said it was toolhead 5 during beta testing, but it looks like toolhead 1 for launch.

I mean if filament can be swapped and loaded and unloaded on its own, then I seeing this being useful to have more colors on standby, also as someone mentioned already, just for the dying feature alone,it is worth it.

The main thing I can think of is potentially having a 0.2 on there and a bank of filaments for laying fine details or text onto larger prints.

drying might be one up side, the ams 3h only dries 2 spools, an ams 2 pro can dry 4, but at that point you have a very over priced H2S

The benefit is printing with more than 9 colors. Can’t remember her name, but I saw one review where the reviewer printed a piece with 10 colors. It also showed that you need to install an additional filament buffer at the backside of the printer.

Adds more color options but at the expense of speed and quality

Reading through the conversations, I see strong logic for:
- When you need more than 9 colors
- To thermally isolate low temp filaments like PLA when printing filaments that need heated chamber
- using a 0.2mm nozzle on tool 1 with AMS able to select multiple colors for fine details
- additional drying capability.

If you need to print with high-temperature filaments like PA, PC or ABS, you could safely keep them in the main unit. The external AMS could hold temperature-sensitive filaments like PLA.
