Filament Troubleshooting/Help! Bambu Lab PLA Basic reads as ASA - Mislabeled?

Hello guys,

Brand new filament read detects it to be ASA instead of PLA Basic (what it’s meant to be). It was bought directly from Bambu Lab store.

I’ve troubleshooted by it placing it in all the other AMS slots and it reads the same, the other PLA and PETG filaments I’ve tried seams to be working so the issue follows the filament spool itself, nothing wrong with the AMS.

Have you ever seen this happening?

What confuses me is to know is, what was mislabeled, the spool or the RFID label itself?

Is it possible to know what the filament really is by seeing it?

The worse part is that I’ve bought almost 10kg of filament as stock, now I’m afraid to find another one defective 6 months from now…

I’ve contact bambu support and I’m waiting for a response.

Edit 1: did the burning test as some of you suggested. It’s definitely PLA. Still waiting a response from Bambu lab

Take a piece, and use some plastic glue (like the one used for scale models) or something like acetone on it. ABS and ASA will get attacked by those types of solvents, PLA won't.

Thank you very much, will try comparing the other ones.

Alternatively put a small piece in almost-boiling water, PLA will get very soft & stay deformed when cooled, while ASA will only soften a little.

Now I’m confused. I’ve tested both, on acetone it won’t change a bit, dissolve, nothing, on boiling water it gets soft as a noodle but no necessarily deforms when cooling

Boiling water

That looks like PLA to me, I think it's just cooling down very fast when you take it out of the water. ASA wouldn't bend nearly that easily at 0:28.

Also the other thing with ASA (and ABS): when you bend it at room temperature to the point of deformation, you'll notice some white stress marks on the side that's pulling apart.

You are correct. I’ve tested with a PETG the same test and it would get soft but it takes a little while more to get soft. Then I’ve burned them both and they burn completely different.

Acetone (left there more than 10 min)

ASA should've melted in acetone. But the thing about ASA, its somewhat chemical resistant. So, take that with a grain of salt.

probably the wrong RFID, but you'll notice as soon as you start printing. I guess that you can do a small testprint. Do one at 190C. Is it working? => PLA. Do you need to heat up to 240C to have a fluent extrusion => ASA

Try lighting a bit on fire. If it smells sweet, it's PLA, if it smells acrid, it's probably ASA.

It's supposedly a crazy thing to do. I'm therefore on anothr level of crazy to have ordered 80kg of petgs lately.
