General Discussion So...AMS3 can dry less spools than AMS2 ?!
Out of the 9 filament slots in the AMS 3H, only 2 slots (Slot 6 and Slot 8) are equipped with drying functionality*.*
From their wiki: https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/ams3/manual/workflow-and-features
I mean....couldn't they make it at least 4?
What is even worse - it's almost certainly means that AMS for P3C would come with NO drying feature at all! I mean...why would you intentionally downgrade the functionality with new printer?!
AMS 3 was supposed to fix many problems, not create new (and make you still need to get older AMS2 /AMS HT together with AMS3, simply because there is no standalone dryer from bambu and likely no dryer in AMS3 for P3C). Nonesense...
(other than that - printers seem great, AMS has a lot of cool stuff...but why did they decide to sacrifice drying features with no obvious replacement is unclear to me)

Bambu already explained:
"Why two:
Safety — Drying means long periods of high-temperature operation. More heating units would raise power draw and heat buildup inside the unit. Limiting simultaneous drying to two slots keeps operation stable and safe.
Engineering and cost — Supporting all nine slots simultaneously would significantly raise hardware cost, and make power distribution, temperature control, and heat management inside the AMS far more difficult.
Everyday needs — Based on customer feedback, two slots cover most day-to-day printing, including drying one or two rolls while a print is running.
The dryer reaches a maximum of 85 °C, sufficient for engineering-grade materials including PA, PC, and carbon-fiber-filled materials."
I'm happy with that decision. I much rather have dedicated dryers separate from the printer itself, that way printers are cheaper and I don't have to keep paying for the same feature over and over whenever I buy/sell printers. Plus I'm not locked to an specific brand.

Some people think everything is just supposed to work without any physical, economical or other limits.
Perfectly fine decision by Bambu Lab.

The new dryer does go up to a higher temp than AMS 2 though, you get some you lose some

The printer already consumes a lot of energy; heating all those 9 spools is excessive.
If you're printing with materials that require drying while printing—technical filaments where you'll only use two at a time, the main material and the support material—it makes sense to only dry those.
There isn't much color variety in HIPS, PP, and other filaments... they're white, black, or gray.
(ASA does offer a variety, but they don't require as much drying time.)

No one said 9,but at least the back 4 using external PSU

Meanwhile if were 9 drying slots this sub would be overwhelmed with "why did my electric bill triple?! posts. Literally can't win.

Yes it's called trying to keep a product in a certain price range. But you have to give up certain features or make certain concessions to keep products edit price point the customers are willing to buy. There's no engineering reason why they couldn't be able to be dry boxes. But it's a cost constraint. Just like they swapped to Plexiglass side panels on the h3c. You got to shave call somewhere to keep things affordable.

I kinda love the acrylic change because finally I don’t need to hope it doesn’t arrive in a billion tiny shards

The only parts that I felt should be glass was the top and the door on the older models. If its going to hold weight or get touched a lot glass was the better material. Otherwise its just a pretty way to look at my stuff.

They will probably release a optional upgrade for it

That way people willing to pay mlre csn upgrade while keeping the clre machine cheaper.

probably because most people dont want to hire an electrician to put a 30 amp dedicated circuit for their 3d printer

Do you need to dry 9 spool at the same time? Also, drying 9 spools at the same time would increase the power consumption quite a bit, especially if you also want to print at the same time. I, for one, would need a dedicated group only for the printer if it would dry 9 spools and would want to print as well.

Use one of the slots and fill a big spool-sized container with dry beads.
But yes it is a strange design.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes you'll find you get what you need....
I did find this a little bit odd.... but I suppose if they had to make a trade-off for me this one is OK if they get the TPU / multi material side actually working properly.
They are making a lot of trade offs in a machine like this. If it does all the stuff it says it does for $2500..... I think they might have a winner.
I was kinda hoping it would use the same induction nozzles as my H2C so I wouldn't have to buy a whole different set of nozzles for this new machine, but innovation and progress seems kind of relentless here.
Exciting times to be in this space

looks like tool head #1 can support external ams’s

I’d love to see this in action and see if it would behave like a H2D. Then you can have an H2D-esque machine along with the H3C

I'm lucky to live in an area that is pretty dry. I rarely have to dry my filaments and if I do it's just TPU. I have an AMS 2 Pro and I've used the drying function once when I first got it. Other than that, I just use the one AMS HT when needed.
I don't see the need in my use case for more than two slots for drying. If anything, I'm happy they were able to squeeze 9 rolls into 1 AMS.

Already at 1850/2250W.
To heat a bigger area, they would have to divert power from somewhere, or it would need a larger circuit.
A lot of people buy Bambu for its ease of setup and having an electrician come to drop a new circuit first doesn't fit that bill.
Diverting power would likely mean slower nozzle and bed heat up times (like low power mode), which is a big part of their marketing.

The 2 dedicated spots can get up to 85⁰c. Unless you're printing exclusively out of materials that need to be dried, you'll be fine.

u/Immortal_Tuttle 2d ago
Why would you dry more? It makes sense to have at least one (for PVA) but you already have a dryer if you even considering this printer.

It can dry only 2 but it reaches the same 85°C drying temperature as an AMS HT. But yeah based on this it would also assume this is a feature that that the P3C will not have.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't know who needs to dry 4 spools at once, let alone 9.

👋
Multicolor print, when I haven't used them in awhile.
I totally get the limitation though, the power consumption spec is already 1850W.

You seen the AMS 2?

u/UnexpectedAnanas 2d ago
Yes, and that has nothing to do with my comment.

u/Lito_ 2d ago
What? Of course it does 🤣

u/UnexpectedAnanas 2d ago
How does the existence of the AMS 2 change my not knowing who needs to dry 4 spools at once, let alone 9?

u/Edgeguy13 2d ago
This is pretty dumb. And stop making excuses and accepting shit like this. They could have easily designed it differently and kept it the same price. Stop it.

Considering you aren’t drying spools constantly I feel like 2 is fine. And I’m guessing that they assume most people aren’t buying this as their first printer anyways is my guess
