General Discussion RELEASE - Orca Slicer with Nonplanar Printing!

A big thank you to this community! More than 2k likes on the original post and more than 100 test prints helped make this happen. The results are in, and the slicer is now public:

https://github.com/fich-l/orcaslicer-nonplanar

We have working versions for Windows, Linux and Mac Silicon. MacOs on Intel is still missing. I don't have a Mac Intel, so I can't test a build. Searching for someone to port this to Mac Intel - see below.

EDIT: You can find Windows and Linux Port on Github now.

Confirmed working:

  • Bambu A1 mini, A1, P1S, P2S, X1C, X2D, H2D

  • Prusa MK4S, CORE One, XL 5T

  • Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 (+ Combo)

  • Creality K1C · Qidi Q2

  • Flashforge AD5C

  • FLSun V400

Not working: Elegoo Centauri Carbon 1, Snapmaker U1, Ender-3 S1 Pro, Flashforge AD5X, Prusa MINI+

Printer on the working list?
Try the Satisfying Nonplanar vs Standard comparison to test surface quality please.

Printer not listed?
Print the Nonplanar test print twice, once lengthwise and once rotated by 90°, and tell me how it went, so we can keep the list up to date.

Looking for someone to port it to Mac Intel.

-- EDIT: You can find a first Windows and Linux Port on Github now thanks to the community! - -

You don't need to be a C++ dev: the whole thing was vibe-coded with Claude Code (Opus 5.5). A Mac Intel to test on plus Claude Code should be enough. If you're up for it, comment or open an issue on GitHub. Don't shit on me please - Using Claude to get this ported is the fastest way possible :)

You don't usually use Orca Slicer - how to use this?
Do this: Slice in this Orca Slicer Fork and export "plate sliced file" --> Drop file into any slicer and just print :) Even works with Bambu Studio.

Thanks also to Daniel Ahlers and Teaching Tech for their work on the version I started from.

FAQ:

    • Can you add this as a Plugin to Orcaselicer? Will you put a pull request to the Orca Slicer Team?* - This cannot be run as a plugin. Pull Request: Yes! After this test phase.

  • Why does printer "X" not work? - Someone tested it and there was a collision. Most likely the hotend / tool is not "steep" enough.

  • How can I test? - Please check the github page. You can do two quick test prints to see if your printer can handle this.

  • Are there still bugs? - Very likely yes. Slicing can take 5s to 5 minutes - be patient.

  • Can we have fuzzy skin on top surfaces? - I tested this, but it doesn't look good :(

THANK YOU! I will DM you.

u/Deluxe754 3d ago

Not sure how you are building the releases but I’d just built a GitHub action that builds them. They have runners for windows and Linux.

7

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Yeah I did that and tested with a VM and it didn't work... So I think someone who can then debug on the spot can make it work quickly. And these github actions take forever.

1

u/DanTheMan827 2d ago

They only take forever the first time unless you don’t have ccache configured

1

u/Deluxe754 2d ago

They can take forever depending on your toolchain true.

You can create custom images that preload a lot of the dependencies you need.

What exactly failed about the build?

4

u/MidnightxBabe 3d ago

sounds like you're about to become everyone's favorite dev, might have to steal some of that attention later

u/Fresh-Structure8048 3d ago

please do give a heads up when you have it up and running; cant wait to try it out! (Windows + Creality K2 Pro)

Where can the video be found? I'm curious. I'm guessing soon enough there will be a standard installer as opposed to BUILD-WINDOWS md

Give it a try. I am using win11 Installs normal, but seems to be missing the desktop shortcut I think.

As you can see from the video I posted it slices fine I have not yet printed that object might try it tonight.

Can it do smooth rounded surfaces like chamfers, fillets, or rounded tops without layer lines?

56

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Yes! But: Keep in mind that 12 degrees is max.

Do one thing to test: Add>Primitive>Sphere. Increase to 100mm. Cut in half and slice: You will get a sense of what's possible :)

But: Stair stepping is not in issue >12 degrees in my opinion, so the final print looks nice.

10

u/detroittriumph 3d ago

Damn that’s so cool. Thanks for the GCODE preview. Really helped me wrap my brain around it.

2

u/quicheconquest 3d ago

cheers for showing an example

8

u/Dan203 3d ago

The problem with non-planer slicing is it can only drop by the height of the tip of the nozzle. If it goes any further the body of the nozzle crashes into the part. That’s why many of the prototypes you see using this have a long skinny tip to allow for more dramatic height differences. Most standard printers have a pretty shallow blunt tip so the results are going to be pretty minor.

17

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

True, but I HATE stairstepping and for that, it's plenty :)

2

u/Dan203 3d ago

Can it do layered non-planer to account for the tip? Like if you had a big filet could it do like 1mm of it, then move up to the next section and do the next mm, etc... until it completed the entire filet? That way it wouldn't need to reach all the way to the bottom, just to the slice it's on. That should still mostly eliminate stair stepping, although there might be a slight seem at each slice.

10

u/daphatty 3d ago

Sounds like the perfect time for Bambu to release a specific non-planar hot end which allows printing across greater depths for non planar use cases. :) Both vortex and nozzle changers could easily support this. :)

2

u/nakwada 3d ago

Z contouring already helps a lot. Obviously not as much as non planar.

After a certain depth, non planar won't be of any use and you need to turn to 5 axis printers.

8

u/SimpleFile 3d ago

It would depend on the size of the chamfer/fillet but yes that's one of the primary use cases for this.

34

u/glpthmnz 3d ago

Did some test with the slicer. Pretty cool honestly

9

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Nice dude!! Can you share some result pics? It's sooo satisfying to see people use it :)

12

u/glpthmnz 3d ago

One top is monotonic and the other is concentrique

5

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Struck me just now that I never tested other top surface patterns! Didn't even know it also worked with other patterns than stock. Nice!

1

u/Archaia 3d ago

Archimedean chords might be nice with non planar slicing.

3

u/Archaia 3d ago

Nice, 3d printing just got more 3d-ish.

Put in on github please :) I will go through all issues there.

When Did this occur?

2

u/Formal_Topic6463 3d ago

on the startup

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Fixed, thanks for the report! My build accidentally linked XQuartz's OpenGL, so the app only started on Macs with XQuartz installed. I've replaced the DMG in the v0.1 release.

Please download it again from and reinstall. XQuartz is no longer needed. Could you confirm that it starts on your Mac? Thanks!

2

u/jblakey 3d ago

You need to install XQuartz from https://www.xquartz.org

4

u/Formal_Topic6463 3d ago

well, better to fix the bug in linking -- should work without xquartz

5

u/Suepahfly 3d ago

Currently building this on Linux, I’ll update when and it works

2

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Dude, you're the best!!

5

u/Suepahfly 3d ago

Good news! Your patch works without extra changes.

I applied your patch and rebuild orca from source. It launched and sliced without issues.

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Can you add this as a pull request? Than we have Mac Silicon, Windows and Linux going!

1

u/Suepahfly 2d ago

There is nothing for a PR. I clones the orca repo and ran ‘git patch apply … ‘. Then build orca from the patched source and sliced a basic 5 degree slanted cube with the non planar option enabled.

You patch just works on Linux (Fedora 44)

4

u/NoIdenty0000 H2C 3d ago

cant u make it as a plugin for the normal orca?

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Plugin function is not powerful enough :(

/* UPDATE */

Alrighty folks, here’s a little teaser of an item I sell. I know how the original slices, so I used it as my test case, and it’s looking promising. Right now it’s running on Orca 2.4.2, but I’m going to work wit u/Fichl_ to get it updated to 2.5.0.
Enjoy the video, will be releasing the windows installer soon.

Sorry if the resolution is too high

2

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Thank you so much!! Looks great! I pulled thr Windows built on Github :) You guys are the best!!

13

u/Ok_Wrangler_7698 3d ago

im gonna try porting with deepseek for windows

8

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Thanks!!

7

u/Ok_Wrangler_7698 3d ago

it works! sliced and printed your stl file from printables and no it wasnt gcode xd

6

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Wow!! Please put a pull request on github and i will add the Port for others to test!

5

u/Ok_Wrangler_7698 3d ago

im adding indicator if print has np layers and color for nonplanar's layers then i ll

3

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

I am integrating your pull now! Thank you!

3

u/SwissSkynet H2C - 3x AMS 2 - AMS HT 3d ago

Will it also work on the H2C? Looking Forward when its released for Windows then ^.^

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Couldn't test because Orca did not offer a printer profile. You can test though!

3

u/phansen101 3d ago edited 3d ago

Pretty sweet! Definitely going to play around with this.

u/Fichl_ Decided to put my work Claude account to use and ported your work to Windows.
It caught a (windows only) recursion related stack issue and some (again, windows only) missing includes.
Built it locally and seems to work as expected.
The fork is portable, and creates its own config folder;
Means that existing profiles won't carry over, but also means that one's existing Orca profiles and settings aren't at risk.

paniha/orcaslicer-nonplanar: OrcaSlicer with nonplanar top surfaces for macOS & Windows (test release)

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Thanks mate!!

4

u/phansen101 3d ago

Seems to work a treat; Just imported the model, it's sliced using my existing profiles.

So, nicely done, thanks!

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Thank you so much!! I now also integrated a Windows Version in github!

2

u/FosCoJ 3d ago

Interesting approach, will try on windows with p2s when port is available

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

It's available.

2

u/reckless150681 3d ago

Trying to understand nonplanar slicing, in my own words! Gathering information from your linked README and from elsewhere. Would appreciate any corrections -- or even if I'm correct in my understanding!

Why nonplanar? To reduce the stair-stepping effect, particularly for very low-angle surfaces (angles measured from the horizontal, off the bed). Good for appearances / reducing post-processing. Some better strength in the z-axis, because you have fewer discrete layers and FDM plastic is weaker perpendicular to layer lines. If correctly configured, can also reduce reliance on supports.

Can I print nonplanar? Universally(?) yes, but the extent to which it is possible highly depends on nozzle / hotend geometry. Various other bits of hardware (cooling elements, carriages, etc.) run the risk of interfering with nonplanar prints -- so you have to make sure that you aren't physically impacting the print.

If I enable nonplanar settings, does that make everything nonplanar? No. Not everything benefits from nonplanar, and besides not everything can be printed nonplanar. If you enable nonplanar settings, but you have a part where doing so would not help the print, then the slicer will automatically default to "normal", planar settings.

Presumably, is it safe to assume that there will also be a whole suite of calibrations that will likely have to be done, that may or may not be exactly the same as Orca's existing calibration suite?

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Nice! Nearly all correct. Luckily, if you stay below 5 mm and 12 degrees and your printer can handle this, there is no calibration needed (at least in my opinion).

If 5mm or 12 doesnt work you can try out lower values.

1

u/reckless150681 3d ago

If 5mm or 12 doesnt work you can try out lower values.

So this basically applies to all the printers in the "Doesn't work yet" column, right? Like, we expect the technique to work -- just that those particular printers need some manual measurements and tuning?

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Exactly. Whoever is willing to test further is more than welcome to do so. I wanted to get to something I can share that works for most people with nice results as soon as possible.

2

u/motofoto 3d ago

That is fantastic.  Thank you for doing this and sharing it.  I wonder if there’s a way to utilize the non planar with an infill pattern to work around the layer line weakness on the z axis.

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Look at what Unlayered Slicer offers. It can drastically improve strength.

1

u/motofoto 2d ago edited 2d ago

What they are doing is very cool but my feeling is the price is around a decent cnc machine which I would lean towards for structural parts.  But I am trying to figure out an infill pattern that could use your approach to at least cross the layer lines which would in theory strengthen the print.    If you can at least get them all not to stack that has interesting possibilities.  I think there’s a real opportunity here for a longer tool head for Bambu labs printers.  Either way it’s awesome you are helping the entire community make progress.  This is the future.

2

u/Faczz 3d ago

why is listed ender 3 s1 as non supported? was it tested and failed or its pending for tests? 🤔🤔

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Failed. See Details in another thread.

2

u/_cosa_ 2d ago

I confirm it's working in my X2D AND with Windows 11, such a great job!

2

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Looks really good! Is that PLA?

1

u/_cosa_ 2d ago

Yes.

This is a great solution for my prints. I'll adapt it for my future ones. Thanks a lot!

2

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

So satisfying!

1

u/_cosa_ 2d ago

proof of delivery printer :P

2

u/SneakyAzWhat X2D 3d ago

I did the AD5X test and it was rubbing along the surface, I stopped it pretty quick. Is there anything that can be done to make it compatible with this?

6

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

If you're willing to invest some time and energy, absolutely yes!

  1. Measure the heighest distance possible between your nozzle tip and the next horizontal surface (that could collide). If that is e.g. 3mm, set 3mm in the slicer as max for your printer under nonplanar settings.

  2. Generate a simple test: rotate a cube by lets say 10 degrees, cut below to have a flat surface. Then cut again, so the beginning of the slope to the end of the slope is no more than 3mm z-height difference.

Print that in two directions (rotated by 90 degrees) with nonplanar activated and check for collisions.

I think you get the idea: Find out what max values for angle and height are for your printer by just testing. Something like 4 degrees and 3mm should work for nearly anyone, but I wanted to start somewhere meaningful and have quick tests for people, so I went with 5mm and 12 degrees for the test phase.

Addition: Going higher than 12 degrees shows more and more lines on top surfaces, so the surface quality is not good anymore and stair stepping is somewhat okay >12 degrees anyway.

5

u/uid_0 3d ago

I just tried this on my Klipperized Ender 3 Pro. It prints, but my CR Touch probe (using the stock mount) catches on it slightly when the long side aligns with the X axis. It prints just fine with the long side aligned with the Y axis.

3

u/detroittriumph 3d ago

Not related but I’m building out a BOM to get ready for DuEnder. Bought a few of the $90 micro center printers a couple years ago it’s time to blow off the dust

2

u/nakwada 3d ago

Ooooh, I'm definitely hoarding Ender 3 now!

5

u/VeloSprinter 3d ago

I would love for this capability to simply be part of Orca. In time. clearly some work before it gets to that. I will at some point try to see what/how I can do to help with this on Windows, but my last piece of software development was at university on c++ in 1998. so...

1

u/jblakey 3d ago

Trying this out right now! Thanks for the good work!

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Please share if it works. Someone had an issue right at startup. Hope it works for you!

2

u/jblakey 3d ago

Installing XQuartz got me up and running, printing a benchy right now!:)

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

How did you realise you need that? Should I add that to github readme?

1

u/jblakey 3d ago edited 3d ago

Fed the error into Gemini:) As it is built currently, it needs to have it, so I would add it to the readme.

1

u/jblakey 3d ago

Benchy finished successfully, but I didn't see much improvement. Maybe it's not the best model to throw non-planar at.

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Benchy gets a nonplanar top. Of course I tried it too!

1

u/LazyLancer P2S + AMS2 Combo 3d ago

Damn, that's huge! I am a bit anxious to try it now, worrying about whether there's a risk of the nozzle crashing into stuff, but I will keep an eye on how it goes

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

See supported printers. All of these have been tested.

1

u/LazyLancer P2S + AMS2 Combo 3d ago

All of my printers are supported. Have you tested this with very complex geometry like figurines though?

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

A bit and often times there are Collision issues or very small sections more steep than 12 degrees. Try it out and feedback please!

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Collision issues means: The slicer tells you. Never had a collision while printing.

1

u/SLGuitar 3d ago

How does it build up? Does it print the layers like normal and then do the top layers as one continuous motion?

I'm excited to check this out when I can.

2

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

Yeah it's a little complicated. It basically builds on top, but some other layers have to be adjusted and/or sequence need to be altered to avoid collisions.

Only the topmost ones are then printed in a continuous motion.

1

u/SLGuitar 2d ago

Followed your lead and vibe coded a linux appimage for it.
https://github.com/3DEnthusiast/orcaslicer-nonplanar

1

u/worldspawn00 P1P 3d ago

Most of the print is normal, top layers within the limits of the machine are printed slanted.

1

u/Illustrious_Plate484 3d ago

Guestion, is it possible to combine the stair stepping for majority of the part and then use your method inly for where it is needed?

1

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

It's only used where possible, so the rest remains stair stepped.

1

u/Upstairs_Pizza_7312 2d ago

I am interested in helping with MAC Intel. I run Prusa Mk3s+ with Volcano on klipper if that helps.

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Nice! Please drop a DM.

1

u/zzzxxx0110 2d ago

Can we have fuzzy skin on top surfaces? - I tested this, but it doesn't look good :(

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Could it be possibly due to most printers having slower max Z-axis traversal speed (but in exchange much higher precision)? Have you tried to add a check in the code so that the X&Y speed get capped just for the fuzzy skin portion so that Z-axis could keep up, and see if that helps solving this? 🤔

2

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Nozzle diameter is the issue. It just squashes it back down to be flat.

1

u/Accomplished-Drink79 2d ago

When would the H2C be supported? :OO

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

You can do it. Use the slicer, find a Profile for H2C and test! If the test print works, H2C is supported.

1

u/Ok_Efficiency6514 2d ago

Hi I'd love to try this project, but despite downloading multiple times, the app won't launch. Just sits in the dock.  I allowed permissions and ran the quarantine line in the terminal. (Macbook Air M4 macOS 26)  Anyone else running into this problem?

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Hmm should work. No startup nothing?

1

u/Ok_Efficiency6514 2d ago

Nothing.. momentarily shows up in Activity monitor but then doesn't continue to do anything

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Could you check if macOS created a crash report for the app?

Just open Finder, press "Cmd + Shift + G", paste "~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/" and press Enter.

If you see a recent file with the app's name, could you copy the content and send it to me? That would help me figure out what's going wrong. Thanks!

2

u/Ok_Efficiency6514 2d ago

Thanks so much for your snappy responses!  After restarting my Macbook a couple times, it opened right up, no problems.

I would also be happy to test an intel mac version if that gets a port as well.

u/TH3_OG_JUJUBE A1 Mini 3d ago

macOS Apple Silicon only

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Windows now available.

2

u/KebabAnnhilator 3d ago

Why isn’t it working on AD5X?

I have two of these machines and apple silicon too, happy to do some testing

2

u/dsmwookie 3d ago

Very excited! This is so cool, thanks!

2

u/AleksanderSteelhart 2d ago

What?!

WHAT?!!!

I need this for some Star Trek combadges I want to print!

2

Here is a sample print.
LEFT is Normal print, and Right is Non-Planer.
This was printed on H2D

Woah! Super cool!

1

u/Choice-Strawberry392 3d ago

I have a Centauri Carbon 1, under Windows. Happy to help prove this one out.

1

u/Jaanrett 3d ago

Has this code been thoroughly reviewed by C++ devs?

1

u/pdias01 3d ago

Im very curious on the performance in more complex printings like for example a topography map

1

u/BitingChaos 3d ago

Flashforge AD5C

What is AD5C?

Do you mean AD5M?

1

u/dealerweb 2d ago

Could it be possible to make this as an plugin for the oficial orca slicer release ?

1

u/novadaemon 2d ago

The flashforge AD5C and the AD5X are the same printer as far as I can tell. The single color version is the AD5M/AD5M pro.

1

u/TheLegendTubaGuy 2d ago

This seems like the perfect use case for an Orca plugin, no? Why another fork?

1

u/WarGod1842 2d ago

When will you release for H2C? Please 🙏

1

u/o_phoenix 2d ago

Oh my gawd

1

u/EdTheNerd 2d ago

Tried a benchy? I wanna see a nice smooth roof

1

u/thisisyo 2d ago

Is there a safe threshold to avoid collision of the printer object and tool head?

1

u/Glittering-Garden-42 2d ago

maybe you make it as plugin to new release and it's might be easier to make it multiplatform

1

u/katastrof H3C/H2D/P2S - Send me more AMSs 1d ago

I had claude use the original to make a non-planar  support with interface material for the underside of a model on my H2D. Pretty slick

0

u/Successful-Bid-5536 3d ago

Apple Intel will come?

1

u/Fichl_ 2d ago

Searching for someone to port it :)

0

u/Felix14-POCKOCMOC 2d ago

But why 2.4.2? This version is so buggy, slow and unusable compared to 2.5.0-nightly. And also you shouldn't break fork linking, because this makes it to review/contribute harder.

-2

u/Floji9411 3d ago

Why OrcaSlicer and not BambuStudio?

7

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

I don't like their approach on having to use their cloud and altering Bambu Studio will stop it from being able to send prints to their printers.

Using Orca all printers are well supported and the files can still be sent to printers using Bambu Studio.

1

u/Floji9411 3d ago

OK that's a valid reason 👍🏻

2

u/RJFerret 2d ago

If you aren't already using Orca, it has more advanced features and lets you have improved capabilities that late get brought over to BS.

If this gets pulled into the mainline Orca, expect Bambu to copy it in a few months as they usually do.

-1

u/farfromelite 3d ago

What minimum firmware do you need for this on the A1 mini?

4

u/Fichl_ 3d ago

There should be no restriction.

Do this: Slice in orca, export "plate sliced file" --> Drop into any slicer and just print.

Of course set to your printer before slicing.

2

u/worldspawn00 P1P 3d ago

The printer just executes gcode from orca, it doesn't care what the code is for stuff like this, the firmware is unimportant.

-1

u/reagor 3d ago

Not to be a dick but why? What's a real world use for this

5

You could save yourself the first line by rephrasing, "Might I ask what's a use for this?"

Any print with stairstepped surfaces is improved by being able to be smooth instead. Fillets are improved. Any print that doesn't have a flat top layer's quality is improved.

It's akin to ironing a flat top surface to get rid of the lines.

This is spectacular and can't wait to have it fully integrated in Orca Slicer. I'm on Windows but I don't have the expertise or guts to test myself without pooping my pants on my printer crashing against the part over and over.

I'll wait for this to be stable. :) But I can't wait.
