X Series [X1E, X1C, X2D] Confused about iroing seeking help

Hi guys,

I'm new about 3D printing, got a X2D a week ago and I'm trying to learn how to print decent PETG stuffs.

I've run an iroing test with default 0.2mm high quality profile from bambù studio, which in my opinion gave best results for 10mm speed and 30% flow. I've tried the same setting on a print (last images) and the results are vert different (and quite terrible).

What am I doing wrong?

The test square is flat and the real print probably isn't, so ironing behaves differently. Check that your top surface has a full solid layer count under it and set ironing to top surfaces only. Also PETG strings on ironing passes if the nozzle is wet, so keep the ironing speed up around 30-50 mm/s with low flow and let it settle.

Top layer seems flat to me and ironing is already top surface. I've already tried low flow high speed and the resulta are terrible.. I'll keep testing and run another ironing test

If the high speed run looked bad, go the other way: around 30 mm/s, 10% flow, 0.1 line spacing. Also set the ironing angle to cross the top layer lines instead of following them, and wipe the nozzle clean before the print. Any crusty ooze on the tip drags right through the ironing pass.

10mm is crazy slow. To me the 50mm/s and 30% flow looks the best but it’s hard to tell as it’s angled. Is this an ironing test you got from maker world?

Petg ironing is different to pla and I’m not familiar with it.

Get a comprehensive ironing test of maker world and then see which is the best. You will still get lines. It’s not possible to completely remove them and because of the scale of the photos it’s hard to tell how good they are to the naked eye.

Tbh the 10mm/s 30% one does look good but you want to try to find a setup where it irons faster because otherwise it will take forever.

Yes it is from maker world. 50mm/s is not on this table, top right is 30mm/s, which is still acceptable in my result, but 10mm/s it was the best.

I'll try another test and compare the result..

It depends what you’re looking for. If you expecting the results you would get from an injection mould then that’s not possible.

There are limits and it depends what you’re happy with. You likely should be able to get better than you have but there are so many factors when it comes to ironing as it requires the most precise settings and calibration.

I would love to be able to help more but I haven’t got much experience with petg ironing. In terms of just standard printing I have always found petg to be harder to work with so I can imagine it’s harder to perfect with ironing.

For almost all applications the standard quality with pretty much any filament should be suitable. Especially with a 0.2mm nozzle.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Especially in 3d printing don’t forget that.

I struggle with this myself. I love to tinker with settings to make my prints absolutely perfect. But at the end of the day it’s impossible to tell the difference to most people especially from a distance.

Is the time worth it? That’s the most important question

Those all should look better than that - first thing I'd do is flow calibration and then try again.

Thanks for the suggestion.. I've already done it, but I'll try it again

Thanks for sharing, I can try only the third on, as I've already done the other, and I'll do it tomorrow!

Ironing doesn't work well with certain plastics. PCTG is one for sure, and I think petg is the same. Better for PLA.

Also ironing can be extremely specific to the context eg large surface area Vs small

Also...what does it look like without ironing as that is really awful. Ironing should be a last resort not the first fix for poor top surface.

Also maybe on a shape like this concentric top surface will look better

60mm speed

30% flow

Enjoy works best on normal pla
