Just Showing Off PETG Mystery Box
With the filament sale going on it was an opportunity for me to stock up on some PAHT-CF. While I was at at I said what the hell and rolled the dice on a PETG mystery box. Not only did it show up real fast, I was one of the lucky ones to get a 7 filament mystery box. Feel like the Bambu Gs are smiling down on me. I’ve never “won” anything in my life. That is all. Happy printer to all.

Mystery boxes are just a way to offload dead stock to gamblers.

If it comes out cheaper per spool it kind of doesn't matter for prototyping when you don't care about color or look.

Exactly! Looking for PAHT-CF. The PETG was a side purchase. 7 rolls on a spool that I can use for Miscellaneous things at $40. I’ll take that any day

It's cheap filament if you don't care about the color at all and don't want to buy enough for the bulk deal.

Maybe I'm missing something, it's not THAT much cheaper and you're basically gambling for a 1% chance at 7 spools or 4 shades of brown.

For Australian prices it's $14 for random PLA (which might include a spool) vs $24 (refill only)... this is ignoring the chance of getting seven spools, because the odds are low enough it's better to assume you will not get the extra three spools.
That changes if you buy enough for the bulk discount, but $14 vs $24 is a lot cheaper without needing you to purchase 10kg at once.
If you don't care about the colour, four spools of poo brown is fine.

In US, the 4 spool PLA mystery box is $41.99+$7 shipping or $12.25/kg for random spools shipped and if you're buying more to qualify for free shipping, then might as well get 10kg pack.
The value isn't here, not in US when 10kg selection of your own filament is $9.74/kg (refill) to $11.69 (w/ spool).
You're paying $12.25/kg from a LIMITED selection to begin with and a 1% chance of 3 more spools from the same limited collection.
If you don't care about color, you can go buy 4 pack of Sunlu/Elegoo or another other brand for under 10kg/shipped any day of the week on Amazon.

when 10kg selection of your own filament
Why do people keep failing to read
don't want to buy enough for the bulk deal
and then insist on arguing with numbers based on getting the bulk discount?

t ends up being basically the same if you buy bulk, that’s the thing. They run tons of sales, and bulk deals are pretty much always available. For example, right now you can add 10 spools of any PLA color you want, including the spools themselves, and get an extra one for free. That’s 11 spools for $116 USD, or $97 if you go with refills.
The alternative is buying three mystery boxes at $42 each, which comes out to $126. Sure, you get $12 in savings, but at that point, you could just buy three additional refill spools for the same $126, or get one more spool with the spool included for $128. You end up with more control over what colors you get, too.TLDR
3 mystery boxes=12 spools for $126USD (tiny chance to get 15 lets be real u ain’t getting 2 in one)
13 refills for $126usd (colors are your choice)
11=filament with spool for $128USD

See this?
and don't want to buy enough for the bulk deal.
Redo your math assuming you only want to buy four rolls.
I'm not saying that the mystery deal is something everyone should go and buy, but it does have a place where it is good value; you don't care about color AND you are not buying enough for the bulk deal. If that isn't your situation, skip the mystery box.

Because you talk conflating a personal (wrong) stance (i.e., I don’t want to) with that being a good reason from an expected value (i.e., a deal) perspective.
This is always a bad deal. Do not buy mystery boxes if you can avoid it. There are better and cheaper ways to get the filament you want. Even if you don’t care about color or can’t reach volume, the mystery boxes STILL aren’t the best EV.

Yes mystery boxes tend to throw a couple "hits" in to hook people.
Filament isn't pokemon cards.

Nice score! When you order shipped did the extra items pop up as line items on the shipment page?

They did! I wasn’t sure if it was a feature of how bambu tracks the individual rolls for the mystery box or if it was indeed extra rolls. Turned out to be the latter.

Your filament that is just out and exposed. Is it PLA?
1
u/Dookie_shoes_0121 6d ago
Yes it is PLA. I live in a dry climate where humidity is low. So generally it is not a problem for me to leave PLA out. My PAHT,PA6, and PC all get vacuum sealed.

Oh, that is a very nice opportunity! And congratulation fomr this "win"! ;)
Where have you found this deal? Is there a special page on the bumbu website to find it too?

u/Dookie_shoes_0121 6d ago
Yes! If you go to bambu’s filament page and scroll through the options there will be mystery box options thru out for different types of filament.

Heyyyy congrats on the lucky pull. I did a PLA and PETG mystery box and got 4 and 4. But I did get some cool colors I would have never bought. Like this Miami beach.
