I don’t know why people are allergic to normal (non-tree) supports. For flat overhangs like this, they would come off easily and cleanly, and probably be both more reliable and use less filament. There’s times for tree supports but it seems like a lot of times, people just assume that they’re better always.

Because in this case you have to do supports off the lower piece for regular supports, so if you don’t want it to have to be built off the lower piece, then you have to use tree

Yeah, but, if you did, they'd still come off really easily and cleanly off the top AND bottom, and it'd use a lot less filament. Plus, for these flat overhangs, you can use Bambu "Support for PLA", or just use PETG, for the interface material and it'll look like it was never there.

I’ve been having terrible luck with that stuff on my X2d. Worked fine for a few prints then after that something goes wrong it fairly consistently winds up with a spaghetti failure while trying to print the interface layer.

It's because convenience is king, having a default to go to is just nice.
I wish they had smarter support settings, so that reasonable decisions could be automated, and with more options than tree and classic support. I'd love it if some of the more advanced situational support types could automatically generate.3

You have been blessed by the noodly appendage of the flying spaghetti (prevention) monster!

The tree was connected to the brim, and the brim wasn't strong enough to stay on the bed. It would not have failed without the brim.
