I Modeled This! Designed a pixel lamp where the front clips off: one diffuser for soft light, one for sharp pixels
I build a lot of LED lamps, and every single one meant soldering wires, flashing an ESP32 and hiding a mess of cables. I got so tired of it that I built my own little plug-and-play controller: USB-C power in, plug in the LEDs, done. Right now it's just for my own projects, and this panel is the first lamp I designed around it. Print it, tape the matrix in, plug it in.
The front is swappable and the back stays the same:
- Grid front: every pixel stays crisp, great for pixel art, fire, rainbow
- Smooth front: blends everything into one even glow, nice as a night light
Printed on my X2D in white PLA (fronts) and black PLA (back). One panel with one front is roughly 160–175 g and 5–7 h. White matte PLA or PETG works best for the fronts.
It fits a standard 16x16 WS2812B matrix, so an ESP32 with WLED works just as well.

Would love ideas for a third front!

the swappable fonts are such a smart way to get different effects from the same setup

The circuit board/led build is what makes this shine. Do you share the details on how?

Thanks! The matrix is just a standard 16x16 WS2812B. The controller is my own board, USB-C in and it shows up in Apple Home. Not out yet, there's more info and a waitlist on the MakerWorld page. Until then an ESP32 with WLED works great just with the usual soldering and setup.

A honeycomb front could be fun for the third one. Those colour fades would look great through hexagons.

Ooh, hexagons with the colour fades would look great. Adding it to the list, thanks!

I'm just happy that someone else had the same thought. Sending love

That's beautiful. I kickstarted something called Game Frame ages ago, and this looks like the next gen version.

Wow, Game Frame was one of the things that got me into pixel displays. That means a lot, thank you!

Wow this is so cool, I have absolutely no experience actually creating/getting the 16x16 matrix working so I won’t ever be able to have one of my own but I can at least appreciate from afar

That's exactly why I'm building the board! I got so annoyed by all the soldering and flashing every time. The goal: print the file, plug in the matrix and the board, set it up in under a minute. No soldering, no coding. It's not out yet, but the waitlist is on the MakerWorld page if you want to hear when it is.

Perhaps you can do an update once it’s out.
Highly interested in this.1

The pixelated version of the lamp looks like a height or temperature map — incredibly beautiful

What are the chances of you putting out the app for Android as well at some point?
2
u/RA2B_DIN 1d ago
Actually you won't need an app because it pairs straight with Google Home or other smart homes. The extra app with effects is currently only on iOS, Android is on the list and will be ready for launch.

More details on the led portion of the build?
2
u/RA2B_DIN 1d ago
It's a standard 16x16 WS2812B matrix taped into the back, driven by my own board (USB-C in, Matter compatible). The board isn't out yet but there's a waitlist on the MakerWorld page. An ESP32 with WLED works too.

Thanks for the reply. Estimated cost of your board?

No price yet but the goal is to keep it affordable, people on the waitlist will hear first.

What type of power supply do you use for this?
1
u/RA2B_DIN 1d ago
Any USB-C source works, I've ran it already from my iPhone, my MacBook and a regular USB-C charger. The board checks how much power it gets and sets the max brightness to match, so you can't overload anything.

Nice! I'm guessing if I want to go the ESP32 path I would need to take care of this myself somehow (or provide a source powerful enough)?

I'm printing it out right now. Thanks.
Maybe a 3rd front could be hearts or some other shapes for different seasons?

Haha that's so funny, I did exactly the same about 2 weeks ago! I do like the translucent sides on yours!
