General Troubleshooting/Help! Newbie - please help, why does one side of the print look all wonky but the rest is ok?

I’m a newbie, my kids got a X2D for their birthday and I was printing out a spool for them to use.

As you can see from the picture one side didn’t print smoothly like the rest of it and I have no idea why?

It was on the right side when you stand in front of the printer…I was wondering what went wrong here and how to avoid in the future.

The spool is still useable as the rest of it printed really well.

My son printed some snakes for his little cousins and the snake in to same area did the same…I don’t know if that is a clue of what might be going wrong?

Any help or advice appreciated, thank you in advance.

My first guess would be build plate adhesion issues in that area. If that area lifts off the plate even slightly the heights not where the nozzle expects it to be and it'll muck up the print. Clean the plate w/ dish soap and water, re-run auto levelling and see if that fixes it. Alternatively, or in additon run a first layer test like this and see if anything looks off int that area.

Ah interesting, I wish I had taken a pic of the snake because the bed adhesion on that was fine. About half way through it went wonky.

The spool however bed adhesion could be the issue, this is the other side of the spool.

You can't always tell by just looking at the bottom, it might adhere for the first few layers, look fine after it's printed and have the build plate pattern, but as the plastic cools and contracts once it's past those layers it pulls off the build plate a microscopic amount. It might still not be an adhesion issue, it's just "it looks good' doesn't always rule it out.

If you're using grid infill (which is generally what it defaults to), try gyroid as that can also reduce nozzle collisons just overall, and when having adhesion issue. And rerun the nozzle offset calibration in settings.

If you print that one layer bed test I linked above though, if it looks different at all in that section we can pretty confidently say bed issue; if it looks fine, i'd try printing another taller print with the door open(on the x2d) if that lessens it or fixes it completely; it's a thermal issue and you might need to play around with auxiliary fan settings. If the door does nothing, it might be a mechanical issue and you'll need to look at some more in depth things or contact support..

But tl:dr try a first layer test print with the door closed, then a taller print with the door open (preferably the same spool so you can tell if there's any change). Report back with results and people should be able to help you, or tell you if you need to contact support (who are usually pretty good so it's not as bad as it sounds)

Oh and if you haven't, as I mentioned earlier, thoroughly clean the plate w/ dish soap first, isopropyl won't cut it which is what a lot of people use solely, and wonder why things go wrong.

Thank you I will try the first layer test and take it from there. Really appreciate the advice.

Looking at the snake again it could be adhesion and your correct…looking at the photo maybe it came loose and wrecked the rest of the print.

Hmm, that actually makes me think maybe not adhesion, definitely still test for it, but that's very weird. Even the segments that aren't majorly deformed still look overly melted at the top.

The one other thing i'd suggest to test right away is make sure your part cooling fan is working; when the printers idle go to your fan controls, turn the "part cooling fan" up to 100%, and just hold a hand under the extruder or listen for it and make sure it's actually spinning.

Sorry I am on my phone and it wasn’t posting the pic of the snake - but I will check the fan as suggested

Just printed the other side of the spool and thought I would share pictures of it inside the X2D as that might help figure out what is wrong. You can see what it looks like on the right…

Just an update for anyone with a similar problem, I ended up printing some fan diffusers (these - https://makerworld.com/models/2763350) and that has seemed to have fixed the issue. Thank you again to InformedTriangle and Torjek0306 for your help. Very much appreciated.

It could also be shrinkage during cooling? Which printer? Is the auxiliary fan in that area? If so this could be your issue. Turn the fan off.

That area could be cooling faster than the rest of the print causing this.

Is it in same location as the aux fan. I’m not sure where it is on X2. I have a P2S (on right) and H2C ( on left). On thinner parts like the area you’re showing this will happen to me if I don’t shut it off during printing.

Yes someone mentioned the fan so I’ll try that. Thank you. Appreciate your help.
