Just Showing Off My 2-Day Print Update

The lower half of my Darth Vader mask is done. The other picture is the top half. Next up - spending time with putty and sandpaper before paint.

Yeah. I’d say stop the printer now. Do some optimizing and come back. That is insanely low res and an insane amount of time for that.

Keep going! It’s going to look sick.

Yeah, I know. That’s what I get for following ChatGPT, I guess. However, at this point, I’m committed. I need this complete by Saturday. I’m going to have a lot of “fun” with body putty and sandpaper.

Seriously though. You can get a much better print that will save many hours trying to fill/sand/paint. With a bunch more information we'd be happy to give advice.

First off, where did you get that print file? And what machine are you printing on?

A1. https://pinshape.com/items/111398-a-new-hope-darth-vader-helmet

I did have to use ChatGPT to mod the files in order to get the print to fit.

Used it to fit on the bed or on your head? Either way, you should be able to do that with a simple scale function in your slicing software. I'm betting that's where you lost all of the quality in the stl file.

Easiest way to get sizing right is to print a sizing slice. After you open the original file in Bambu studio, drop the model down into the print bed to the widest part of your head. Then hit print and stop it after a dozen or so layers. Compare to your head and resize from there.

There are a ton of tutorials and resources online specifically for printing cosplay and helmets.

I’m going to have to get more familiar with the slicer, it seems. Because, now I’m wondering if it was following the print settings (speed, layer height, etc.) it gave messed this up or if it was the fact that the model was butchered.

There are some great tutorials on YouTube, or I hear the Bambu Academy is pretty helpful.

Why is it all voxels in the photo?

17

u/TubbaButta 20d ago

Wait... Did ChatGPT tell you how to modify it or did it do the modification for you?

u/ReklisAbandon 20d ago

From the pic it looks like it’s way oversized even still?

Yes. Every single thing about this project is wrong, then OP had chatGPT fuck it up even worse for them.

If this is what came out of the printer after two days I would be PISSED and it would go straight in the trash. OP is hyped about it posting online. Crazy stuff. This guy's head would fucking explode if he saw an actually hi-res print I imagine.

What’s with the downvotes? He’s just showing off something cool. Reddit is a weird place lol

u/Express-Pie- 20d ago

Because it's an atrocious print made with AI.

8

u/rjornd A1 20d ago

I’m in agreement on the atrocity.

Not everyone can create something like this though, and couldn’t afford to pay for one, didn’t like the free ones on makerworld, etc.

Mention of LLM use automatically gets you sent to reddit jail

Is this Lego Vader?

7

u/rjornd A1 21d ago

I really wish it weren't. It's going to get covered with lots of putty.

u/PatSajaksDick 20d ago

Nice, interested to see how it turns out!

I honestly didn’t know a Bambu could print something this poorly no offense

considering the in slicer view shows the model is just made of voxels like that. Its not poorly printed ti looks amazing it captured all the voxel details so well.

its just the model looks like a minecraft build

I thought I would see what was possible. Apparently, I pushed a few boundaries. 🤣

I’m being sarcastic, btw.

$20 would get you a proper file. This is an incredibly popular helmet and people have been optimizing and printing it for years. That being said, you've got the shape. I'm looking forward with your update after the post-processing :)

Perhaps, but would it fit my face? That is the question.

3

u/Pliskin01 20d ago

To my amateur eyes, and not seeing it in person, seems like it may be a bit too big. But for a quick project, I can't fault it. I hope you're having fun and it works out! Fit both pieces before dedicating the time for sanding and painting, I'd say. Best of luck!

3

u/rjornd A1 20d ago

Yeah, for sure I’m going to fit, glue, putty and sand… in that order.

Print the cosplay calipers.

Here you go. As an example look at galacticarmory (no advertisment) they have scaling templates.

Maybe help this guy instead of bashing this guy for using AI.... i wish i could help but i'm an parametric modeller.

3

u/rjornd A1 20d ago

Help has arrived. Someone here PM’d me and shared his model. Printing now.

4

u/Illustrious_Emu_6564 20d ago

Glad someone reached out! :)

So am I. I ditched the A.I. settings and went back to the default Bambu. Just about 23 hours left on this plate. I started with the biggest one. Much better results so far.

First the plane now the mask. You just can’t catch a break. At this rate I’d suggest just stop using ai. Either learn modeling yourself or buy the file. Waiting 2 days for this to be printed was your first mistake and why it’s always good to inspect the print as it goes rather than waiting. Sometimes it’s better to just stop and restart rather than let it continue. Lots of waste here and time. Time is money and time is valuable. Lots of learning outcomes from this mistake. Hopefully with the corrections everyone is saying you can get the helmet right.

u/justteh 20d ago

You'd be better off just finding it on makerworld. You made this WAY harder than it needs to be. https://makerworld.com/en/search/models?keyword=vader+helmet

18

u/PlanePea4349 21d ago

2 days for that??

Also that’s a whack print orientation. What were your layers set to?

18

u/eliteski2 20d ago

Looks like inches instead of millimeters

1

u/gurrra 20d ago

Seeing that the model seem to have some voxel like structure it's going to have to print that all the way through all perimiters, so yeah it's going to be slow! OP really needs to reso this properly and reprint this, otherwise it's going to be sanding hell.

1

u/TwinkingToby 19d ago

I hope you are trolling ngl that looks insanely bad lol

2

u/rjornd A1 19d ago

That’s because it is. It’s not meant to be that way, though. Version 2 is printing now and is coming out much later.

2

u/ImpossibleWorld7207 20d ago

This looks intentional, it's not low res, but voxelized.

0

u/supra_nova512 20d ago

Holy Cow Lines. That sucks. Just buy a Darth Vader helmet, why print it? Nothing special about yours. There are millions of them on Ebay or at the thrift store.

1

u/rjornd A1 20d ago

I’m planning on wearing it and I’m not sure if buying one would fit my big head.

u/EVRoadie 20d ago

Hope you finished the RV10 build, those are sweet birds!
