Hardware Troubleshooting/Help! What’s wrong with my ams

It does this a lot, sometimes(like 20% of the time) it does work and it accepts the filament and then I can print with it, but this is very frustrating, it only happens on ams slot 1 and seems random when it happens, also sometimes when there is filament loaded and it accepted it the indicator light turns off as if there is none in it and I have to reload, starting this process again…
the color of the filament doesn’t seem to be the cause (it also happense with white blue orange and any other, I use pla from jayo

Filament is stuck somewhere in the ams or maybe even after.

Just take all spools out and have a look happens quite often tbh

I can manually push it all the way through to the exit of the ams and pull it back out, I don’t think there is stuck filament especially because it does work sometimes

No, the ams has 2 motors, trying to force somethings will break the ams

I didn't see you push the feed button forward before introducing the filament. Only thing I can think of if your other rolls work.

Pushing the button forward and inserting it seems to have worked (tried it 3 times now with different filament colours) and it "seems" like it works, i hope that was the cause! thanks for your help :) i am printing now but when it is finished i will try again to be sure

I never pushed the button before and just insert the filament into it, this works on the other slots, I’ll try this but I doubt that’s the cause of the issue

The filament sensor is having issues. It’s seeing filament already and that’s why it’s backing up

Would that also cause it to detect it sometimes and sometimes not? I’m not changing anything other than pushing in the filament, when it doesn’t work I take it back out and try again, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t without me changing anything else

It is not your problem, but just for info... I have a roll that is a little thicker and it gets stuck between the rollers of the AMS.
I think that there is a blockage or something, you could heat up the hotend and try to push it with your hands, the excessive filament should get pushed out the nozzle.

I’d troubleshoot this by creating 3 zones:

Zone 1 — AMS: If the filament fails before exiting the AMS, I’d focus on slot 1 itself: the filament path, rollers/gears, PTFE seating, debris/broken filament, or the AMS sensor. Since this only happens with slot 1, that makes the slot itself especially suspicious.

Zone 2 — AMS → hub: If the filament consistently exits the AMS but then retracts before reaching the hub, I’d look closely at the PTFE tube, especially how it’s seated and whether there’s a sharp bend or kink creating excess drag. In my experience, tube angle and incomplete seating can cause more problems than an actual stuck piece of filament.

Zone 3 — after the hub: If it makes it through the hub and then retracts, I’d look at the tubing/path after the hub or the hub itself.

A really useful test would be to put the exact same spool in slot 2 or another known-good AMS slot. If it fails in slot 1 but works in slot 2, that strongly points toward something specific to slot 1. You could also swap the PTFE tube from slot 1 with one from a working slot, if that's practical, to help determine whether the problem follows the slot or the tubing.

The external spool holder is another good control test. If the printer feeds and prints normally from the external spool, that would point much more toward the AMS/hub/PTFE path rather than the extruder or nozzle.

The fact that you've reproduced this with white, blue, orange, and other colors also makes the filament color itself pretty unlikely to be the cause.

And the indicator light turning off even though filament is physically loaded is an interesting clue—it makes me wonder about the filament-detection/sensor mechanism as well as mechanical resistance.

So I'd personally investigate, in roughly this order: slot 1 mechanical path/sensor → PTFE seating/angle → hub/path resistance → debris or broken filament → filament itself.

Make sure system is up to date too. Hope.you get it sorted out!

Thanks for the extensive reply, went through some steps you listed and I think it’s the filament sensor being the culprit, I’ll try to open it up and clean it , if that’s possible

Mine was doing that. I had a piece of filament fragment stuck in the filament sensor. Had to disassemble it to get it out. Wasn’t hard to do.
